Book Perceptions on the Importance of Prior Teaching Experience for School Counselor Candidates

Download or read book Perceptions on the Importance of Prior Teaching Experience for School Counselor Candidates written by Wendy Roberts and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 23 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Perceptions vary regarding the need for school counseling candidates to have prior teaching experience before working in a school setting. While some believe that teaching experience adds to the credibility and skill set of the school counselor, others believe that classroom management, discipline and lesson design can be learned through the practicum, internship or on-the-job training provided to school counseling candidates. Schools often have their own climate and school politics to contend with. Each setting offers unique challenges for the new counselor based on the job description, administrator needs and school expectations. Knowing how to best meet the diverse needs of the new job setting, school counselors are often ill-equipped to enter the work setting with all the background experience necessary without prior teaching experience. Counselor educator programs who provide hands-on experience, regular contact with educators and opportunities to observe and interact with current professionals in the schools give school counseling candidates much of what they will need to be effective in the classroom. Additional courses to strengthen lesson planning and development, classroom management and discipline and strategies for development of accommodations for students with limited English speaking ability and accommodations for students with disabilities all may help counseling candidates overcome limited classroom experiences with valuable insight to help them understand school politics and ways to best serve all students in a school setting.

Book A Survey Study of School Counselors Perceptions of the Importance of Professional Development Areas

Download or read book A Survey Study of School Counselors Perceptions of the Importance of Professional Development Areas written by Laura J. Bridegan Curran and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 137 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The requirements for school counselor certification have changed since 2000 in Missouri. Most notably, the requirement of previous teaching experience has been removed. Since the position of counselor developed out of teaching, many studies have examined teaching experience or lack of it as variables. Yet none has examined school counselors' perceptions of the importance of professional development areas related to the MoStep School Counseling Competencies. This research study surveyed school counselors to determine if there was a relationship between teaching experience or lack of it and counselors' perceived importance of 18 professional development areas derived from the MoStep School Counseling Competencies. The study also examined demographic variables, self-efficacy and stress, and their possible relationships to counselors' perceptions of the importance of professional development for those with teaching experience and those who lack teaching experience. Findings suggest that teaching experience has no relationship to counselors' perceptions of the importance of professional development areas. An unanticipated finding was that counselors' perceptions of the importance of professional development areas was related to counselors' years of experience as a counselor. Since the early years of counselor experience are important to success in the profession, issues such as early-career mentoring and administrative understanding of the role of the school counselor may prove useful.

Book Teacher Perceptions of the School Counselors Role

Download or read book Teacher Perceptions of the School Counselors Role written by Jenna M. Marchetta and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 54 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This manuscript examines faculty perceptions of the school counselor's role. The study takes place in a rural intermediate school district where the participants are the faculty. Participants were asked to strongly agree, agree, strongly disagree or disagree with statements based on what School Counselor's role should be which current research identifies as being the most important responsibilities of a School Counselor. Results of this study reflect that the teachers and staff of this school do value the important responsibilities. However, participants who had more than 10 years of experience, were less likely to value certain roles such as classroom guidance, teacher consultation, and informing faculty of what the School Counselor's role is. What can be taken away from this study is that there are significant gaps in older generation teacher perceptions pertaining to the different knowledge about School Counselors' role responsibilities versus a guidance counselor in the past.

Book Teacher Perceptions of the Professional School Counselor Role Value Effectiveness and Collaborative Willingness

Download or read book Teacher Perceptions of the Professional School Counselor Role Value Effectiveness and Collaborative Willingness written by Summer Marie Reiner and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 110 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ASCA National Model represents a developmental, comprehensive counseling program that focuses on program foundation, delivery, management, and accountability (Campbell & Dahir, 1997). The ASCA National Model is believed to be dependent on collaborative relationships with other stakeholders. Teachers represent a powerful group of stakeholders, as they can influence the effectiveness of the school counseling program. In a national survey, high school teachers (n=401) were asked about their perceptions of school counselors. The focus of this research study was to ascertain: (a) the value teachers place on the appropriate role responsibilities and inappropriate role activities as described in the ASCA Executive Summary; (b) their perception of school counselor engagement in the appropriate responsibilities and inappropriate activities as described in the ASCA Executive Summary; (c) teacher willingness to collaborate with school counselors; and (d) their perception of school counselor willingness to collaborate with other stakeholders including teachers. This research revealed that there is still a need: (a) to increase teacher awareness on the role of the school counselor; (b) for school counselors to demonstrate their effectiveness; and (c) for school counselors to pursue collaborative relationships with teachers.

Book Teacher Perceptions of School Counselors Effectiveness

Download or read book Teacher Perceptions of School Counselors Effectiveness written by Jessica L. Lepak and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A clear understanding of the school counselor's exact responsibilities has been sought for years. Most recently, the American School Counselor Association (ASCA) has attempted to provide counselors and other school personnel with more precise guidelines as to what tasks are within the school counselor's training and job description. However, even with a national, comprehensive model of school guidance counseling, perceptions of school counselor's responsibilities and effectiveness are greatly debated. This research was conducted to determine teacher perceptions of the role of the school counselor in Wisconsin and to offer recommendations to school counselors regarding best practices in serving students while engaging in a dual role. A total of 33 teachers responded. A modified version of the Classroom Teacher Survey a/School Counselor Effectiveness (Beesley, 2004) was used to evaluate teacher perceptions. Results indicated the teachers' overall adequacy ratings were not affected by the number of additional responsibilities held by the school counselor. The only outcomes that were statistically significant were supervision and substituting for others. Results indicated teachers whose school counselors had two or more additional responsibilities rated their counselor higher in supervision and substituting for others than did those teachers whose counselor had no or only one additional responsibility. Future research is needed to examine the links between multiple roles and school counselor effectiveness.

Download or read book Counselor Educators Perceptions of the Preparation of School Counselors for Advocacy written by Robert L. Kircher and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 91 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It was concluded that the advocacy disposition, knowledge, and skill competencies delineated by Trusty and Brown (2005) are appropriate for inclusion in master's degree programs in school counseling, and that additional focus on advocacy competencies might be needed within programs to ensure that all school counseling graduates learn and are able to apply the competencies. It was also concluded that the perceptions of counselor educators in CACREP-accredited and non-CACREP-accredited programs are more similar than different relative to the importance of including the competencies in graduate programs, the extent to which they are taught, and the readiness of graduates to apply the competencies.

Book A Comparative Study of Pre Professional Counselor

Download or read book A Comparative Study of Pre Professional Counselor written by David E. Herrington and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 18 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This comparative study examined the views of pre-professional counselor and administration candidates regarding the role of the school counselor. The Public School Counselor Role Ambiguity Questionnaire (PSCRAQ) scale was administered to 534 candidates to determine whether they viewed the school counselor as specialized professional or as staff to be assigned ever-changing duties by a principal. Significant differences in PSCRAQ scores between the two groups were found. The findings of this study suggest a need for greater emphasis in both preparation tracks to ensure that counselors and principals are well-grounded regarding the role of the school counselor.
