Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: This research study investigated the perceptions and experiences of the socialization processes among early career foreign national tenure-accruing faculty in a Research I University, using the grounded research design. The findings revealed that the foreign national faculty appeared to shoulder the triad of tenure track responsibilities i.e., teaching, research, and service amidst unclear and unspoken expectations. However, coming from different cultural back grounds, including collectivist cultures at times foreign national faculty needed more personalized attention than is usually offered in the individualistic culture of the U.S. While they focused on their accomplishments, some of the faculty members paid little attention to the sociocultural requirements of their spouses, and developed relationship concerns. Unspoken and vague expectations about research further complicated faculty work and impeded the adjustment process. Very little research presently exists in this area. Although this study fills that gap in literature, a more concerted and focused socialization process, with clearer departmental expectations, and thoughtful institutional support is likely to ensure that multicultural faculty experience more productive, and caring office and home environments.

Book excerpt: This book examines perspectives of fulltime faculty at the School of Education in a major public research university in the United States on their socialization experiences to research. Faculty completed a survey providing insights on their perceptions regarding their research-related experiences during their graduate, early-career, and current stages. Faculty were also asked to provide their perceptions on the institution's efforts towards their research socialization in addition to other descriptive data. Correlations between several types of research activities among faculty member's different career stages were significant. Perceptions concerning socialization to the faculty position were more positive regarding the contribution of faculty members' graduate experiences compared to the institutional efforts. Finally, perceptions regarding the available socialization programs at the institution were positive in general, and were also highly correlated with faculty members' perception about their overall experiences with the institution.

Book excerpt: Teachers' socialization is influenced by what a school provides-induction-and what teachers bring-identity. While scholars research teacher induction and teacher identity independently of one another, it is worth considering them together. The field of teacher identity research is well-established, but induction literature is less so, despite the recent proliferation of teacher induction programs across the United States. This study aimed to contribute to the field of research on effective teacher induction through the lens of identity. I set out to understand the induction year from the teacher perspective, asking two central questions: What are teachers in their first year at the school experiencing-both professionally and personally-in the induction year? How does each teacher's sense of personal and professional identity mediate the induction experience, thus affecting the socialization process? I collected data in this descriptive case study primarily through qualitative interviews with five teacher participants throughout their induction year at a new school. The findings of this study revealed that they experienced their induction year support as comprehensive, balancing uniformity and autonomy; the teachers also revealed the need to define and understand their new school community while navigating their outer and inner layers within it. The findings to my first research question informed those of my second: the five teacher participants' socialization process was most notably mediated by the personal experiences they identified as relevant to their teaching selves, which, in turn, shaped how they described their current role as teachers and their professional desires. Significant stories about the past influenced their sense of professional self in the present and how they described their hopes for their future teaching self. The organizing framework emerging from their stories and the consideration of identity research alongside induction research contributed to the field by offering nuance to the possibilities for effective induction practices.
