Book The English and Australian Cookery Book

Download or read book The English and Australian Cookery Book written by An Australian Aristologist (pseud.) and published by . This book was released on 2023-02 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: European Australians have generally regarded the consumption of native flora and fauna with hesitation. From the outset of European colonisation of Australia, emphasis has been placed upon the cultivation of exotic grains like wheat, and the farming of introduced animals such as chickens, sheep and cattle, in order to establish a familiar and long-term food supply. However, by necessity and sometimes by choice, native produce comprised an important part of the diet for many colonists throughout the 19th century. While plants were rarely exploited as a food source, plentiful kangaroos, wallabies and water fowl were an obvious source of protein for those isolated on properties in the Australian Colonies. Fish were a major part of the diet for coastal settlements.Possibly as a result of this ambivalence, there was little attempt to codify a specific Australian cuisine until The English And Australian Cookery Book, was published in 1864. Written under a pseudonym by esteemed Tasmanian police magistrate and politician Edward Abbott, this cookbook showcases the diverse range of dishes that were popular in the colonial period. Abbott described himself as an aristologist, an expert in the study of food, culture and society. Abbott collected recipes that often combined native and exotic ingredients and he carefully selected and refined traditional English recipes to suit Colonial Australian conditions, ingredients and tastes. He also championed locally produced wines and discussed in great detail related matters such as smoking etiquette and the employment of servants. The latter topic will be of great interest to visitors to the Port Arthur Historic Sites' Cascades Female Factory, since Edward Abbott had several female servants from the Female Factory in his employ. The English And Australian Cookery Book provides a unique window into the rich but almost unknown culinary heritage of Colonial Australia and in particular, Colonial Tasmania. Whether you're a history buff, foodie or simply looking to expand your cooking repertoire, the English And Australian Cookery Book is a must-read.

Book excerpt: "Paul Bangay is renowned for the expansive and elegant gardens with classical lines and symmetrical plantings that he has created in Australia and all over the world. Yet gardens on this grand scale are not accessible to everyone. With more of us living in apartments, townhouses and terraces, our gardens are now being squeezed into small spaces such as balconies, courtyards, lightwells or rooftops - and this makes for challenging garden design. In Small Garden Design, Paul applies his 25 years of experience with gardens of all sizes to reveal how best to structure, design and choose plants for small spaces. Chapters on Balconies & Terraces, Rooftops, Inner City, Lightwells and Courtyards are lavishly illustrated with photos by Simon Griffiths and enhanced with lots of practical tips on plant types, paving, irrigation, soil, outdoor dining, lighting and making the space appear larger. In this accessible and practical book, Paul shows us 'how to make the most of the small space you have, and how to transform it into the paradise that we all aspire to'".--]cProvided by publisher.

Book Fast Food Genocide

Download or read book Fast Food Genocide written by Joel Fuhrman, M.D. and published by HarperCollins. This book was released on 2017-10-17 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the #1 New York Times bestselling author of Eat to Live and The End of Diabetes, an unflinching, provocative exploration of how our food is killing us and the ways in which we are unwitting participants in an unprecedented and exploding health crisis. Fast food is far more than just the burgers, fries, and burritos served at chain restaurants; it is also the toxic, human-engineered products found in every grocery store across America. These include: cold breakfast cereals; commercial and preserved (deli) meats and cheeses; sandwich breads and buns; chips, pretzels, and crackers; fried foods; energy bars; and soft drinks. Fast foods have become the primary source of calories in the United States and consequently the most far-reaching and destructive influence on our population. The indisputable truth is that our highly processed diet is the source of a national health crisis that is exploding into a genocide with unseen tragic implications. Heart attacks, strokes, cancer, obesity, ADHD, autism, allergies, and autoimmune diseases all have the same root cause – our addiction to toxic ingredients. New York Times bestselling author, board-certified physician, nutritional researcher, and leading voice in the health field Joel Fuhrman, M.D., explains why the problem of poor nutrition is deeper, more serious, and more pervasive than anyone imagined. Fast Food Genocide draws on twenty-five years of clinical experience and research to confront our fundamental beliefs about the impact of what we eat. This book identifies issues at the heart of our country’s most urgent problems. Fast food kills, but it also perpetuates bigotry and derails the American dream of equal opportunity and happiness for all. It leaves behind a wake of destruction creating millions of medically dependent and sickly people burdened with poor-quality lives. The solution hiding in plain sight — a nutrientdense healthful diet — can save lives and enable humans to reach their intellectual potential and achieve successful and fulfilling lives. Dr. Fuhrman offers a life-changing, scientifically sound approach that can alter American history and perhaps save your life in the process.

Book See What You Made Me Do

Download or read book See What You Made Me Do written by Jess Hill and published by Black Inc.. This book was released on 2019-06-24 with total page 464 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Domestic abuse is a national emergency: one in four Australian women has experienced violence from a man she was intimate with. But too often we ask the wrong question: why didn’t she leave? We should be asking: why did he do it? Investigative journalist Jess Hill puts perpetrators – and the systems that enable them – in the spotlight. See What You Made Me Do is a deep dive into the abuse so many women and children experience – abuse that is often reinforced by the justice system they trust to protect them. Critically, it shows that we can drastically reduce domestic violence – not in generations to come, but today. Combining forensic research with riveting storytelling, See What You Made Me Do radically rethinks how to confront the national crisis of fear and abuse in our homes. ‘A shattering book: clear-headed and meticulous, driving always at the truth’—Helen Garner ‘One Australian a week is dying as a result of domestic abuse. If that was terrorism, we’d have armed guards on every corner.’ —Jimmy Barnes ‘Confronting in its honesty this book challenges you to keep reading no matter how uncomfortable it is to face the profound rawness of people’s stories. Such a well written book and so well researched. See What You Made Me Do sheds new light on this complex issue that affects so many of us.’—Rosie Batty
