This book was released on 2019-07-26 with total page 493 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Adolescenceâ€"beginning with the onset of puberty and ending in the mid-20sâ€"is a critical period of development during which key areas of the brain mature and develop. These changes in brain structure, function, and connectivity mark adolescence as a period of opportunity to discover new vistas, to form relationships with peers and adults, and to explore one's developing identity. It is also a period of resilience that can ameliorate childhood setbacks and set the stage for a thriving trajectory over the life course. Because adolescents comprise nearly one-fourth of the entire U.S. population, the nation needs policies and practices that will better leverage these developmental opportunities to harness the promise of adolescenceâ€"rather than focusing myopically on containing its risks. This report examines the neurobiological and socio-behavioral science of adolescent development and outlines how this knowledge can be applied, both to promote adolescent well-being, resilience, and development, and to rectify structural barriers and inequalities in opportunity, enabling all adolescents to flourish.

Book Why People Do the Things They Do

Download or read book Why People Do the Things They Do written by Nicola Baumann and published by Hogrefe Publishing GmbH. This book was released on 2018-05-07 with total page 446 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A unique and comprehensive book by leading researchers looking at motivation and volition. How can we motivate students, patients, employees, and athletes? What helps us achieve our goals, improve our well-being, and grow as human beings? These issues, which relate to motivation and volition, are familiar to everyone who faces the challenges of everyday life. This comprehensive book by leading international scholars provides integrative perspectives on motivation and volition that build on the work of German psychologist Julius Kuhl. The first part of the book examines the historical trail of the European and American research traditions of motivation and volition and their integration in Kuhl's theory of personality systems interactions (PSI). The second part of the book considers what moves people to action – how needs, goals, and motives lead people to choose a course of action (motivation). The third part of the book explores how people, once they have committed themselves to a course of action, convert their goals and intentions into action (volition). The fourth part shows what an important role personality plays in our motivation and actions. Finally, the fifth part of the book discusses how integrative theories of motivation and volition may be applied in coaching, training, psychotherapy, and education. This book is essential reading for everyone who is interested in the science of motivating people.

The authors examine a key community-based cooperative in Botswana that was launched in the early 1970s, and is hailed as a model for development and social change. With little formal education, virtually no job experience, still working their own agricultural lands, and many as single mothers, the co-op workers have maintained their business for over twenty-five years. Equal Sharesis written in different voices, and tells the story of the defining moments in the lives of the Oodi Weavers. Book Development and Assessment of Self Authorship

Download or read book Development and Assessment of Self Authorship written by Marcia B. Baxter Magolda and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-07-03 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book brings together new scholarship that expands and refines the concept of self-authorship across cultures. It adopts a constructive-developmental approach to self-evolution that emphasizes the interaction of personal characteristics and contextual influences on individuals’ construction of knowledge, identities, and relationships. Individual chapters cover subjects from populations as varied as Dutch students, male and female Bedouin and Jewish adolescents, African American male and female adolescents in economically depressed areas of the US, Latino/a college students grappling with ethnic identity and dissonance, Australian college females preparing to be childcare workers, and finally a comparative study of Japanese and U.S. college students’ epistemic beliefs. The book concludes by addressing questions about the challenges and opportunities involved in developing a valid measure of self-authorship that is less time and expertise-intensive than the in-depth one-on-one interview employed until now; and offering an outline of future theoretical and methodological research needed to further our understanding of self-evolution in general and self-authorship in particular.

Book Portfolio Development and the Assessment of Prior Learning

Download or read book Portfolio Development and the Assessment of Prior Learning written by Elana Michelson and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-08-11 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For over thirty years, portfolios have been used to help adult learners gain recognition for their prior learning and take greater control of their educational experiences. The portfolio has become a distinctive means of assessing such learning, serving as a meaningful alternative to conventional papers and standardized testing. Portfolio Development and the Assessment of Prior Learning: Perspectives, Models, and Practices provides a primer of flexible approaches to shaping and conducting portfolio-development courses. It offers practitioners in the field an extensive range of model assignments, readings, and classroom activities, each organized around a specific theme: Academic Orientation, The Meaning of Education, Personal Exploration, Learning from the Outsider Within, The World of Work and Careers, and Dimensions of Expertise. Twelve case studies by practitioners in the field then show how academics in the US and around the English-speaking world have adapted the portfolio to changing circumstances in order to deliver academically rich educational services for adults. These case studies highlight portfolio development in the context of web-based instruction, changing institutional imperatives, service to historically disenfranchised groups, partnerships with industry, and cross-institutional cooperation. In addition to serving as a valuable hands-on resource for practitioners, Portfolio Development and the Assessment of Prior Learning locates portfolios and assessment in a broad social and intellectual context. Thus, the authors also offer an historical overview of the usefulness of portfolios in the assessment of prior learning and then consider their use in the future, given current trends in higher education for adults. The book explores the implications of a changing educational landscape, in which new student populations, budgetary pressures, and understandings of knowledge both enrich and challenge student-centered approaches such as portfolios. The approaches and case studies are not only valuable to adult educators but, equally, to faculty in higher education concerned with the development of competency- and outcomes-based assessment.

Book The 2010 Millennium Development Goals Review summit

Download or read book The 2010 Millennium Development Goals Review summit written by Great Britain: Parliament: House of Commons: International Development Committee and published by The Stationery Office. This book was released on 2010-12-19 with total page 98 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2000 world leaders established the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), a set of global targets seeking to reduce poverty and promote development. The Department for International Development (DFID) has made the MDGs a central strategic objective. There has been notable progress towards reaching several Goals, including those focusing on child mortality and primary education. However, the Goals seeking improved gender equality and maternal health, amongst others, are seriously off-track. This report focuses on a UN Summit (20-22 September 2010) held to review progress achieving MDGs five years before the 2015 deadline. Achievement of the Goals depends on two factors namely it is vital that both donor and developing countries fulfil their promises - there are a number of off track goals demonstrates that much greater commitment is needed by a number of developing country governments. Secondly, multilateral organisations, notably the UN, must work as efficiently as possible to support improved health, education and other basic services in developing countries. The DFID must continue to press for better co-ordination and the amount of funding it provides should be related to success in achieving improvements. The DFID should also engage in planning for a new international framework to replace the MDGs after 2015. A review of the effectiveness of the MDGs should be carried out to assess whether this framework represents the best approach to facilitating development before a new set of targets is agreed for the post-2015 framework. This new framework shouldinclude a greater focus on: reaching the most vulnerable people and the very poorest; giving higher priority to climate change, biodiversity and the environment; and addressing population growth.
