Book Pentateuchal Studies Classic Reprint

Download or read book Pentateuchal Studies Classic Reprint written by Harold M. Wiener and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-05-03 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pentateuchal Studies It is a condition precedent Of all conservative work that the conservative writer should know the higher critical case a great deal better than any critic does. That may sound paradoxical and difficult: it is really the simplest thing in the world. For the conservative must know not merely the strength of the critical case, but also its weaknesses; and these appear never even to be suspected by the critics. But unless he knows the critical case thoroughly, knows it in its seem ing strength, he will never be able to detect its weaknesses. He must be perfectly acquainted with the arguments he is to refute if he is to have any chance Of showing others exactly where they go Off the rails. Book The Books of the Pentateuch

Download or read book The Books of the Pentateuch written by Frederick Carl Eiselen and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-14 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Books of the Pentateuch: Their Origin, Contents, and Significance To some it may appear presumptuous on the part of the author to offer to Bible students a new Introduction to the Books of the Old Testament. The ground has been covered often, even by English-speaking scholars, and, what is far more significant, has been covered well. To mention but a few books in English: the student with adequate preparation may turn to the standard work by the late Professor Driver, or to the admirable Introduction of Professor Cornill; the student interested in a more popular presentation of the subject will find satisfactory guides in the Introductions of Professors Bennett, McFadyen, and G. B. Gray. And yet the author has felt for some time that there is room for another Introduction - an Introduction as complete, comprehensive, and scholarly as the works of Driver and Cornill, but written in less technical or more popular language and style. The aim and purpose of the author to supply this want will explain some characteristics of the present work. Few abbreviations are used and relatively few footnotes are given. Whenever possible, reference is made to books written in English, and preference is given to books or periodicals which may be expected to be within reach of students removed from large libraries. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bible Studies: I. Studies in the Pentateuch; II. Studies in the Life of Christ; The International Sunday-School Lessons for 1894 With this volume of Bible Studies a new series begins. It is the plan of these Studies to cover substantially the whole Bible in the course of seven years. The measure of favor with which both the American and British Christian public have received the preceding volumes warrants the beginning of another series. There is nothing new for the author to say by way of preface, except to cordially introduce his new publishers, Messrs. Fleming H. Revell Company, whose well-known firm is a guarantee for the publisher's department. The volumes as they may successively appear will come to their readers in their Old typographical dress, and the general plan of the Studies has been unchanged. In this volume there are several reprints from preceding ones, inasmuch as the new series in part overlaps the last series. This the author trusts will be no blemish on the present volume. Book PENTATEUCHAL ANALYSIS INSPIR

Download or read book PENTATEUCHAL ANALYSIS INSPIR written by Edwin Cone Bissell and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-09-05 with total page 58 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Pentateuchal Analysis and Inspiration The statement that the Bible should occupy a central posi tion in thought and education, without distinction of secular and religious, conveys very different impressions to different minds. To some, it seems to threaten a return to the intellect ual follies of the middle ages. The school-men held as their favorite maxim that all other learning was but the handmaid of theology. If the Bible be made central in all thought, in all science, will it not be necessary to forsake the inductive method, and return to a' priori reasoning? No man in his right mind would advocate deserting the inductive method, but the placing of the Bible in this position of supremacy involves no such return to mediaeval methods. To make the Bible central, or rather to make Biblical theology central, in all thought and in all educa tion is simply to include the most important of all facts in the inductions we make. We plead for an extension of the inductive method, rather than for a limitation or desertion of its use. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Pentateuch Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Pentateuch Classic Reprint written by Lord Bishop of Bath and Wells and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-20 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Pentateuch Scripture, is the name by which we designate that collection of writings which stand on a different footing from any other writings in the world, because they are, "inspired of God," or, as the word is rendered in the Authorised Version, "given by inspiration of God" (2 Tim. iii. 16). Speaking of the Old Testament only, we know for certain which are the books to which this peculiar, this sacred character belongs; because the Canon, as it is called, of Holy Scripture is identically the same to-day as it was in the days of our Lord and His Apostles, and they always speak of Holy Scripture as possessing a Divine authority. To quote but one of many of the sayings of Jesus Christ, He says: "The Scripture cannot be broken" (John x.35); and He quotes it with the distinctive formula, "It is written" (Matt. iv. 4, 9, 10, &c.); and the Apostles everywhere refer to the same Holy Scriptures as an authority from which there is no appeal. The books contained in the Canon were divided by the Jews into three portions - the Law, the Prophets, and the Hagiographa; a division acknowledged by our Lord, who in Luke xxiv. 44 speaks of "the Law and the Prophets and the Psalms," the Psalms being the chief book comprised in the Hagiographa. This book was released on 2016-11-12 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Popular Introduction to the Pentateuch It is not an unlikely supposition that we owe to the Greek translators the division of the whole into five parts, inasmuch as the names of the different books are not of Hebrew, but Greek origin. The ms. Of the Pentateuch forms in the Hebrew one single roll or volume, which is broken up into sections, not into books. It is therefore to be regarded as 'one book in five parts.' 'we are accustomed to see the Pentateuch divided into five books, and to regard it as consisting of five separate writings. But this seems to be an erroneous View of the case, and it has served to give readier currency to inaccurate theories concerning its authorship.'
