Book Relationship Between Pavement Surface Texture and Highway Traffic Noise

Download or read book Relationship Between Pavement Surface Texture and Highway Traffic Noise written by Roger L. Wayson and published by Transportation Research Board. This book was released on 1998 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This report will be of interest to state DOT pavement engineers, environmental specialists, and noise analysts. The relationship between pavement surface texture and highway traffic noise is discussed. Information for the synthesis was collected by surveying state transportation agencies and by conducting a literature search of both domestic and foreign publications."--Avant-propos.

Book Evaluation of Pavement Surface Texture

Download or read book Evaluation of Pavement Surface Texture written by James C. Wambold and published by . This book was released on 1984 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "It is generally agreed that the skid resistance of a pavement is controlled by the surface texture characteristics. Therefore, by measuring the relevant parameters describing texture, or by measuring a physical process dependent on texture, regression techniques can be used to relate skid resistance to the chosen texture parameter or process. Two scales of texture are of particular importance: microtexture (small-scale asperities) and macrotexture (large-scale asperities). This report describes work performed to: (1) review candidate macrotexture and microtexture measurement methods that can be made at highway speeds (at or above 40 mph), which are presently used or have potential for use in pavement texture measurement; (2) design and build a prototype of the most promising method; (3) evaluate the effects of pavement surface texture on skid resistance; and (4) investigate non-friction-related effects of pavement surface texture. A prototype noncontact vision system which takes texture measurements at highway speeds was developed, and several improvements were made to upgrade the system to provide an advanced-operational prototype. Both hardware and software enhancements have yielded a texture measurement system that is a fast, efficient, and reliable way of obtaining pavement macrotexture data"--Technical report documentation p.

Book The Significance of Pavement Texture

Download or read book The Significance of Pavement Texture written by Glenn G. Balmer and published by . This book was released on 1975 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This paper discusses the influence of roadway surface textures on the skid resistance, the speed-gradient, the wet-pavement accident rate, pavement wear, and the generation of tire-road interaction noise. The tendency of a vehicle to hydroplane is reduced by increasing the texture magnitude. Appropriate textures are developed by using open-graded asphalt friction surface courses and by grooving portland cement concrete with steel tines or a vibrating float while the concrete is plastic. Hardened pavements can be textured by grooving with a diamond saw or by resurfacing with an overlay. More development is needed in texture measurement techniques, especially in automating the stereo-photo interpretation method and the linear polarized laser technique"--Technical report documentation page

Book Surface Texture Classification

Download or read book Surface Texture Classification written by GR. Musgrove and published by . This book was released on 1982 with total page 14 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ability of a driver to stop on a wet pavement surface has been shown as a relationship between a tire and the pavement surface texture. For a number of years, the Ontario Ministry of Transportation and Communications has been classifying pavement surface textures and correlating these textures with the skid number of the surface, as measured by a brake-force trailer. The skid trailer number can be explained now in terms of the pavement surface texture. This paper contains a summary of the test procedure, a discussion of the texture classification system, and the relationship of the six texture parameters is discussed in terms of the equation used to generate a skid number at 100 km/h (62 mph). The advantages of using this system as a complement to present skid testing procedures are outlined, with particular attention to its use in those areas which cannot be tested by the brake-force trailer and in the area of mix design studies. The paper concludes with a discussion of some potential uses for the test method in future research work in Ontario, including the semiautomation of the interpretation procedure.
