Book Pavement Deflection Evaluations

Download or read book Pavement Deflection Evaluations written by R. Clark Graves and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this study a procedure has been developed to evaluate the structural condition of pavements using Road Rater deflection measurements. These procedures compare actual field deflections with deflections calculated by the Chevron N-Layer linear elastic computer program. The results obtained from these procedures are the layer moduli of the pavement materials. Procedures have been developed for asphaltic concrete pavements and composite pavements, including broken and non-broken concrete layers. This report also contains a comparison of structural overlay determined using the results of the new procedure, with overlays calculated using results from the 2-3 Projected procedure currently used by the Pavement Management branch of the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet. A users manual from the computer programs developed during this study is included in the appendix of the report.

Book Pavement Structural Evaluation at the Network Level

Download or read book Pavement Structural Evaluation at the Network Level written by Gonzalo R. Rada and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As State transportation departments consider structural adequacy as part of their routine pavement management system (PMS) activities by incorporating deflection testing, it is important to advance their practices from measuring deflection using falling weight deflectometers, which involves a slow, stop-and-go operation and requires lane closures, to a more viable alternative for network-level pavement management applications. The development of moving deflection testing devices that can measure pavement responses at traffic speeds represents this more viable alternative. The modern versions of the moving deflection testing devices that are actively used today include the Traffic Speed Deflectometer (TSD) and a Rolling Wheel Deflectometer (RWD). The goal of this project was to establish a reliable measure of the structural condition of bound pavement layers above the unbound base layer as it deteriorates over time under traffic and environmental loading based on moving pavement deflection technology measuring at traffic speeds. Moreover, this measure needed to be robust enough in capturing the structural condition or deterioration of the pavement layer notwithstanding the seasonal and spatial variation in base and subgrade layers. As part of the project, a literature review was conducted, and questionnaires were developed for device manufacturers, owners, and users, which were then followed up by interviews. Both the TSD and RWD were found to be potentially viable devices. Based on this finding, a work plan was developed and implemented to evaluate if the two devices met a minimum set of specifications related to the structural evaluation of pavements at the network level including accuracy and precision of deflection measurements, monitoring applied load, operating speed, and distance between deflection measurements. Field evaluations and validation analyses were completed in accordance with the work plan. Ultimately, analysis methodologies and processes were developed for incorporating pavement structural information within highway agencies' PMS applications.

Book Evaluation of Pavement Deflection Measuring Equipment

Book excerpt: This report documents the research performed on evaluation of pavement deflection equipment under Contract DTFH61-85-C-00115 for the Federal Highway Administration. The following devices were included in side-by-side field tests conducted in the Austin, Texas area during the week of August 11, 1986: the Benkelman Beam, C.E.B.T.P. Curviameter, Dynaflect, Dynatest Falling Weight Deflectometer (FWD), Kuab FWD, Phonix FWD, and the Road Rater. The report includes descriptions and comparisons of the devices through information obtained from a literature search, field tests and user survey conducted for this study. The side-by-side test program was performed over a broad range of pavement structures, including thick and thin flexible and rigid pavements, and composite pavements. The measured deflections were compared statistically. Mechanistic interpretations of the measured deflection basins were made and compared.

Book Ground Penetrating Radar Supplements Deflection Testing to Improve Airport Pavement Evaluations

Download or read book Ground Penetrating Radar Supplements Deflection Testing to Improve Airport Pavement Evaluations written by RA. Eckrose and published by . This book was released on 1989 with total page 11 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Deflection testing is a common nondestructive test procedure used by pavement engineers to evaluate the structural properties of the pavement structure and the loadbearing capacity of the underlying soil system. In dynamic deflection testing, the most common analytical models are based on linear elastic layer theory. While pavement systems are neither linear nor elastic, these models have been shown to adequately simulate in-situ response of pavement structures.

Book Network Level Pavement Deflection Testing and Structural Evaluation

Download or read book Network Level Pavement Deflection Testing and Structural Evaluation written by M. Hossain and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 8 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Structural evaluation provides valuable information about the expected behavior of pavements and can be very useful at the network level of pavement management for project prioritization purposes. However, due to the expense involved in data collection and analysis, structural capacity is usually not determined at the network level. In Kansas, due to limited resources and the large size of the network (10 971 miles), annual network-level structural data collection at the same rate (five to ten tests per mile) as the project level is not realistic. This study was initiated to determine the sample size (% mileage) at the network level as well as the test intervals and frequency that can be used as guides for network-level deflection testing and structural evaluation of pavements.

Book Simplified Techniques for Evaluation and Interpretation of Pavement Deflections for Network level Analysis

Download or read book Simplified Techniques for Evaluation and Interpretation of Pavement Deflections for Network level Analysis written by and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objective of this study was to develop an approach for incorporating techniques to interpret and evaluate deflection data for network-level pavement management system (PMS) applications. The first part of this research focused on identifying and evaluating existing techniques, seeking out those that were simple, reliable, and easy to incorporate into current PMS practices, as well as those that produced consistent results. The second part of the research detailed the development of guidelines for the application of recommended techniques and procedures for determining optimum falling weight deflectometer (FWD) test spacing and data collection frequency. While there are many viable techniques available for evaluating the structural capacity of pavements that use FWD for project-level analysis, many of these techniques are time consuming and require an experienced analyst. As a result, using pavement deflection testing for network-level analysis has been limited to date. This guide provides information for the assessment of pavement structural performance for PMS applications. It reflects the general findings presented in the accompanying final report, Simplified Techniques for Evaluation and Interpretation of Pavement Deflections for Network-Level Analysis (FHWA-HRT-12-023).

Book A Method for Evaluating the Structural Performance of Subgrades And or the Overlying Flexible Pavements

Download or read book A Method for Evaluating the Structural Performance of Subgrades And or the Overlying Flexible Pavements written by Nari K. Vaswani and published by . This book was released on 1970 with total page 31 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The structural evaluation of flexible pavement is now carried out mostly by deflection measuring devices such as the dynaflect or Benkelman beam. The object of this investigation was to determine whether the properties of the deflected basin measured by these devices on the pavement surfaces could enable evaluation of the subgrade and/or its overlying pavement separately. The properties of the deflected basin are defined by the maximum deflection and the spreadability, which is the average deflection expressed as a percentage of the maximum deflection. A theoretical analysis showed that these properties are a function of the modulus of elasticity of the subgrade, the average modulus of elasticity of the pavement over the subgrade, and the thickness index of the overlying pavement. A general chart was developed which correlates maximum deflection and spreadability with (i) the subgrade strength, (ii) the average pavement strength, and (iii) the thickness index of the pavement. This chart was tested for structural evaluations of the subgrade and/or its overlying pavement for satellite projects in Virginia. Ten typical examples of the satellite projects are given in the report and the change in their structural behavior with time is discussed.
