Book Paul McCarthy Revised and Expanded Edition

Download or read book Paul McCarthy Revised and Expanded Edition written by and published by Phaidon Press. This book was released on 2016-05-23 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Definitive monograph on America's most challenging and influential artist Los-Angeles-based artist Paul McCarthy (b.1945) creates Disneyesque installations, sculptures of animal/vegetable/human hybrids and slapstick performances in a purge of a national subconscious. The psycho-sexual desires and anxieties induced by the media and the built environment of contemporary America emerge in his collisions of plastic prosthetic limbs and condiments that stand in for bodily fluids. These works have been variously deployed: through live actions, often documented on video, and more recently in outsized figures and artificial rural environments, combined in overtly sexual ways. McCarthy's work echoes that of European artists such as Joseph Beuys or the Viennese Aktionistes, but gives 'action art' a postmodern twist. This new revised and expanded edition includes contributions by luminaries such as Kristine Stiles, Ralph Rugoff, Massimiliano Gioni and Robert Storr.

Download or read book Paul McCarthy written by Aram Moshayedi and published by National Geographic Books. This book was released on 2020-02-04 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book looks at Paul McCarthy's drawings, a rarely examined aspect of his oeuvre, and offers a greater understanding of the work of this provocative artist. A prolific social critic, Paul McCarthy is best known for his work in performance, installation, film, and sculpture. His works reference American cultural archetypes such as Disneyland, B movies, soap operas, comic books, and contemporary politics. His drawings and films skewer, often profanely, mass media and consumer-driven American society by pointing to its hypocrisy, double standards, and repression. McCarthy's work is also deeply influenced by European avant-garde art, especially by figures such as Joseph Beuys and Samuel Beckett, and Viennese Actionism. McCarthy's drawings share the same visual language as his three-dimensional works: violence, humor, sex, politics, art history, and popular culture. Featuring 50 years of works on paper in charcoal, pencil, pen and ink, and collage, this selection includes pieces from McCarthy's renowned White Snow series, his contributions to the Plato in L.A. project at the Getty Museum, and recent sketches in which, unsurprisingly given the current political climate, McCarthy's gloves-off approach feels both necessary and inevitable. This book reveals an important aspect of his drawing techniques, and situates his works on paper as one of the most significant in contemporary art. Published with the Hammer Museum

  • ISBN : 9781545353295
  • Pages : 190 pages

Download or read book China s Advanced Weapons written by U.s.-china Economic and Security Review Commission and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2017-04-19 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This hearing on "China's Advanced Weapons" will examine a specific set of technologies that China's military is considering or pursuing. In framing the hearing topic as "advanced weapons," the hearing will focus on military technologies at or near the global technological frontier-weapons just now coming into development or not yet developed by any nation. As China has narrowed the technological gap with the United States over decades of investments in military modernization, it has become increasingly important to consider Beijing's efforts to develop new and potentially revolutionary weapons systems. China has reportedly conducted seven tests of its hypersonic glide vehicle since 2014. It has deployed not one but two antiship ballistic missiles, one of which has a stated range that reaches past the U.S. island of Guam. We hear of longstanding efforts to develop directed energy weapons, and see evidence of China testing a wide range of counterspace systems that could put vulnerable U.S. space assets at risk. China is making major advances in areas such as unmanned systems and artificial intelligence, aided by rapid commercial progress in these sectors. As the new Congress focuses on national security challenges, it is critical to consider China's efforts to develop and field advanced weapons and the implications for the United States. Panel I will examine China's programs for the development of hypersonic and maneuverable re-entry vehicles. Panel II will examine directed energy and electromagnetic weapons development by China. Finally, Panel III will examine developments in China's counterspace, unmanned, and artificial intelligence-enabled systems.

Book Emmanuel Van Der Auwera

Download or read book Emmanuel Van Der Auwera written by Harlan Levey and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Eponymously titled with his award winning 2014 film, "A Certain Amount of Clarity" is the first monograph dedicated to the artistic practice of Emmanuel Van der Auwera whose work describes our experience of digitized life operating at intersections of documentary, reconstruction and fiction. His practice is one that demonstrates the impact of emerging technologies on perception and civic dialogue, building platforms for marginalized actors and engaging with technicians and scientists to explore the balance of ethics and aesthetics in new media. Through filmmaking, video sculpture, theatre, printmaking, and other media, Van der Auwera sets up encounters with found images that provoke a questioning of our visual literacy: How do images of contemporary mass media operate on various publics, and to what end? With the formal rigor of a logician, Van der Auwera dissects how images are engineered, mastering specialized industry techniques and intervening on their protocol. In so doing, Van der Auwera brings us no closer to a monolithic truth, but constructs new paradigms for reading images and understanding our relationships with them. The monograph moves through works that build on the early film and is broken into 4 main sections, each addressed by a different author.
