Book excerpt: Excerpt from Passaconaway in the White Mountains HE young man who wrote this book commenced his explorations of Passaconaway-land when four years Old, at which mature age he climbed to the turn of the slide on Mount Passaconaway. With him it was a case of love at first sight. He cannot remem ber when he did not love the White Mountains. And, with each succeeding year, that feeling has deepened. How the world looks from a Beal-loved little moun tain nest - score-o'-peaks - the youngster will tell. If, by his chapters, he shall succeed in imparting to some weary soul a tithe of the pleasure which has been experienced by one family during nearly a score of summers, I shall think that it was indeed a happy in spiration which led me to suggest to the lad that he record the things herein set down. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Our Friends: The White Mountains of New Hampshire It was on our seventh trip that we learned we loved the mountains. This time they welcomed us, not as occasional visitors, to be entertained, dismissed and forgotten, but as old friends, to be treated with that hearty cordiality and kindly sympathy which is currency and bond among good friends. In the early evening we tarried in the ravine at the foot of Mount Madison. The brook softly rippled by at our feet, the mountains rose in their majesty before our eyes, and the silvery moon, high in the skies, looked serenely down upon us. On the meadows and hills was the green verdure of June, and high up on Madison remained a patch of snow, to remind us of the winter that had passed. No wonder we talked of the mystery of the mountains, and stories were told of the Indians, who never would climb to the summits because they believed them the abode of their Great Spirit. We began to understand what Whittier meant when he wrote: "Touched by a light that hath no name, a glory never sung, Aloft in sky and mountain wall are God's great pictures hung." Spanning three-quarters of a century, his career had a major impact on emerging movements in conservation, environmentalism, and regional planning. This pathbreaking biography provides the first complete portrait of this significant figure in American environmental, intellectual, and cultural history. Download or read book New Natures written by Dolly Jorgensen and published by University of Pittsburgh Pre. This book was released on 2013-07-08 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New Natures broadens the dialogue between the disciplines of science and technology studies (STS) and environmental history in hopes of deepening and even transforming understandings of human-nature interactions. The volume presents richly developed historical studies that explicitly engage with key STS theories, offering models for how these theories can help crystallize central lessons from empirical histories, facilitate comparative analysis, and provide a language for complicated historical phenomena. Overall, the collection exemplifies the fruitfulness of cross-disciplinary thinking. The chapters follow three central themes: ways of knowing, or how knowledge is produced and how this mediates our understanding of the environment; constructions of environmental expertise, showing how expertise is evaluated according to categories, categorization, hierarchies, and the power afforded to expertise; and lastly, an analysis of networks, mobilities, and boundaries, demonstrating how knowledge is both diffused and constrained and what this means for humans and the environment. Contributors explore these themes by discussing a wide array of topics, including farming, forestry, indigenous land management, ecological science, pollution, trade, energy, and outer space, among others. The epilogue, by the eminent environmental historian Sverker Sorlin, views the deep entanglements of humans and nature in contemporary urbanity and argues we should preserve this relationship in the future. Additionally, the volume looks to extend the valuable conversation between STS and environmental history to wider communities that include policy makers and other stakeholders, as many of the issues raised can inform future courses of action.

Book Intimate Landscapes

Download or read book Intimate Landscapes written by Eliot Porter and published by Metropolitan Museum of Art. This book was released on 1979 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Intimate Landscapes, an exhibition of fifty-five color photographs by Eliot Porter, is the first one-man exhibition of color photographs ever presented at The Metropolitan Museum of Art. Works by Eliot Porter entered the Museum's collection as far back as 1949, when Georgia O'Keeffe presented from the Estate of Alfred Stieglitz an important collection of photographs assembled by Stieglitz himself. This collection included three early black and white prints by Eliot Porter, one of which is reproduced in this catalogue. All the photographs in the present exhibition brilliantly reflect the standards of excellence that are Eliot Porter's greatest contribution to the field of color photography. Upon seeing these photographs, the viewer is immediately struck by the artist's distinctly individual and intimate interpretation of the natural world.
