Book Party Politics in Germany

Download or read book Party Politics in Germany written by C. Lees and published by Springer. This book was released on 2005-09-20 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Party Politics in Germany is the only English-language study of its kind and examines the phenomenon of party politics in the Federal Republic through comparison across time and space. It draws upon new data from the 2002 Federal elections and recent Land elections, as well as on a far more explicitly comparative literature than is generally found in single-country studies. The book not only sheds new light on political phenomena in Germany but also allows students of the comparative method to apply some of the key concepts, models and approaches with which they are familiar to the rich context of a single country study.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The political success of the German Green Party during the 1980s spearheaded the 'green wave' in other West European democracies. Indeed, despite their defeat in 1990, the Greens still hold the balance of power in several Land parliaments and stand a good chance of making a comeback in the 1994 Bundestag elections." "This book is the first comprehensive account of the organisation ideology and political style of the German Greens. Comparing them to established parties, the book gives a full account of the German party system, and assesses the adaptability of both types of party to a changing social and political environment in the new Europe. It examines intra-party political culture, the social profiles of voters and party activists, and the party's place in the context of the 'New Politics'. A challenging read suitable for advanced undergraduates and graduates studying the West European political system."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Book The Minor Parties of the Federal Republic of Germany

Download or read book The Minor Parties of the Federal Republic of Germany written by S.L. Fisher and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Minor parties in the United States have been studied both individually and collectively. On the basis of these studies, social scientists have set forth certain generalizations concerning the types of American minor parties, their characteristics, their functions, and the obstacles they face in the American party system. However, in their comparative analysis of political parties, political scientists have generally limited themselves to comments about the major parties. This study examines in detail all the minor parties which have participated in the national elections of the Federal Republic of Germany since its inception in 1949 in light of the descriptive and explanatory generalizations which have been formulated about minor parties in the United States. The purpose of such an analysis is threefold. First, it provides materials on the West German minor parties which will be readily accessible for cross-national research. Second, through comparisons with the West German experience, the generalizations pro duced to explain American minor parties are made more suitable for comparative analysis. Third, and most important, it seeks to demonstrate that some minor parties play an important role in a party system and that, therefore, minor parties should not be ignored in the comparative analysis of political parties. I am deeply indebted to Professors William B. Gwyn and James D. Cochrane for their help on this project. This work could not have been completed without Professor Gwyn's guidance and prodding.

Book Political Parties and Party Policies in Germany Classic Reprint

Download or read book Political Parties and Party Policies in Germany Classic Reprint written by James Howard Gore and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-05 with total page 54 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Political Parties and Party Policies in Germany During the past decade, and more especially in its latter half, there has been apparent a determination on the part of many persons in this country to see in every legislative enactment of Germany evidences of hostility to the United States. This inclination has been stimulated by citizens of other countries who would be glad to see these two great nations on unfriendly terms. Believing that this opinion had no foundation in fact, and thinking that the energies of the German legislator were directed solely towards the upbuilding of the Empire, while even the most rabid partisan cared more for the defeat of opposing factions than for the embarrassment of foreign nations, a careful study was made of the programs of all the parties of Germany as well as of their attitude on all questions that might have a bearing upon international relations. This examination was made in the midst of the last campaign, when each faction, in its desire to bring confusion to its opponents, zealously sought for words and acts that showed a hostile spirit towards friendly nations. Download or read book Local Public Finance written by René Geissler and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-04-20 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is based upon a comparative public administration research project, initiated by the Hertie School of Governance (Germany) and the Bertelsmann Foundation (Germany) and supported by a network of researchers from many EU countries. It analyzes both the regimes and the practices of local fiscal regulation in 21 European countries. The book brings together key findings of this research project. The regulatory discussion is not limited to the prominent issue of fiscal rules but focuses on every component of regulation. Beyond this, the book covers affiliated topics such as the impact of regulation for local governments, evolution of regulation, administrative costs and crisis prevention. The various book chapters throughout provide a broad picture of local public finance regulation in theory and in practice, using different theoretical and national lenses for the analysis. Furthermore, the authors investigate the effects of budgetary constraints and higher-level regulatory efforts on local governments and on democracy and public services in every European country. This book fills a gap with respect to the lack of discussion on local government finance from an international, comparative perspective and, in particular, the regulation of local public finance. With its mix of authors, this book will be useful for practitioners as well as for scholars and for theory-driven research.

Book The Political System of Germany

Download or read book The Political System of Germany written by Florian Grotz and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-09-12 with total page 588 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a systematic, theory-based, and empirically grounded introduction to the political system of Germany. Compared to other textbooks on government and politics in Germany, it has two particular benefits. First, it analyzes the individual dimensions of the German political system from a uniform theoretical perspective based on the well-known distinction between majoritarian and consensus democracy. Second, it particularly explains how political decision-making in the multi-level system takes place, including the local, state, federal as well as EU levels. This way, the book provides a comprehensive, detailed, and clear picture of how German democracy is organized and how it works.

Book How German Parties Select Candidates of Immigrant Origin

Download or read book How German Parties Select Candidates of Immigrant Origin written by Sara Ceyhan and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-10-31 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book analyzes the threshold candidates of immigrant background need to overcome to run for legislative office. Understanding whether political parties are able to adapt their selection criteria helps to assess their ability to respond to the underrepresentation of citizens of immigrant origin in parliament. Although Germany’s ethnic diversity is on a steady rise, citizens of immigrant origin remain descriptively underrepresented. Despite the pivotal role the intra-party candidate selection plays in shaping who runs for election, the question of how candidates of immigrant background fare in political parties’ candidate selection in comparison to native-born candidates remained a blind spot of research. Therefore, the author presents in-depth empirical evidence on the selection of candidates of immigrant background in German political parties. The book addresses scholars of political science interested in electoral studies as well as policy-makers and party officials interested in a balanced representation of their political representatives.

Book The Red green Coalition in Germany

Download or read book The Red green Coalition in Germany written by Charles Lees and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2000 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This text provides a perspective on the politics and personalities of post-war Germany's most unstable - and apparently unpredictable - national government to date. The author uses previously unpublished research into Red-Green coalitions in the German Lander in order to understand more clearly the nature of the pressures acting upon Germany's first national coalition between the Social Democrats and the Greens. Charles Lees argues that the Red-Green coalition is best understood as part of an ongoing process of political co-operation between two distinct and often antagonistic parties. Grounded and introduced in the context of recent work on coalition theory and public policy analysis, the book examines the trail of political trial and error that has led the two parties from the mutual suspicion of the early 1980s to being partners in national government today. Drawing on the political history of Red-Green coalitions in Germany, the author explains why Chancellor Schroeder's 1998 election triumph provoked such excitement and why his government's subsequent political travails could have been predicted.
