Book Power to the Transfer

Download or read book Power to the Transfer written by Dimpal Jain and published by MSU Press. This book was released on 2020-02-01 with total page 197 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Currently, U.S. community colleges serve nearly half of all students of color in higher education who, for a multitude of reasons, do not continue their education by transferring to a university. For those students who do transfer, often the responsibility for the application process, retention, graduation, and overall success is placed on them rather than their respective institutions. This book aims to provide direction toward the development and maintenance of a transfer receptive culture, which is defined as an institutional commitment by a university to support transfer students of color. A transfer receptive culture explicitly acknowledges the roles of race and racism in the vertical transfer process from a community college to a university and unapologetically centers transfer as a form of equity in the higher education pipeline. The framework is guided by critical race theory in education, which acknowledges the role of white supremacy and its contemporary and historical role in shaping institutions of higher learning.

Book Water Governance Policy and Knowledge Transfer

Download or read book Water Governance Policy and Knowledge Transfer written by Cheryl De Boer and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-05-29 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In an increasingly global community of researchers and practitioners, new technologies and communication means have made the transfer of policies from one country or region to another progressively more prevalent. There has been a lot of attention in the field of public administration paid to policy transfer and institutional transplantation. This book aims to create a better understanding of such transfers in the water management sector. These include the adoption of modern water management concepts, such as integrated water resources management and forms of water governance, which are strongly promoted and sometimes also imposed by various international organizations. Transfers also occur within the scope of development aid or for the purpose of creating business opportunities. In addition, many research organisations, consultancies and governmental agencies are involved in cross-border work. The purpose of this book is therefore to present practical examples of the transfer of modern water management from one locality to another and to critically discuss the transferability of policy and governance concepts by analysing the contextual needs and factors. Case studies are included from North America, Europe, the Middle East and Asia. It is argued that in many cases context matters in water management and that there is no panacea or universal concept that can be applied to all countries or regions with different political, economic, cultural and technological contexts. Yet it is also shown that some countries are facing pressing and similar water management issues that cut across national borders, and hence the transfer of knowledge may be beneficial.

This book was released on 2017-04-27 with total page 583 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the United States, some populations suffer from far greater disparities in health than others. Those disparities are caused not only by fundamental differences in health status across segments of the population, but also because of inequities in factors that impact health status, so-called determinants of health. Only part of an individual's health status depends on his or her behavior and choice; community-wide problems like poverty, unemployment, poor education, inadequate housing, poor public transportation, interpersonal violence, and decaying neighborhoods also contribute to health inequities, as well as the historic and ongoing interplay of structures, policies, and norms that shape lives. When these factors are not optimal in a community, it does not mean they are intractable: such inequities can be mitigated by social policies that can shape health in powerful ways. Communities in Action: Pathways to Health Equity seeks to delineate the causes of and the solutions to health inequities in the United States. This report focuses on what communities can do to promote health equity, what actions are needed by the many and varied stakeholders that are part of communities or support them, as well as the root causes and structural barriers that need to be overcome.

Book Public Private Partnerships

Download or read book Public Private Partnerships written by E. R. Yescombe and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2011-04-01 with total page 357 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the last decade or so, private-sector financing through public-private partnerships (PPPs) has become increasingly popular around the world as a way of procuring and maintaining public-sector infrastructure, in sectors such as transportation (roads, bridges, tunnels, railways, ports, airports), social infrastructure (hospitals, schools, prisons, social housing) public utilities (water supply, waste water treatment, waste disposal), government offices and other accommodation, and other specialised services (communications networks or defence equipment). This book, based on the author's practical experience on the public- and private-sector sides of the table, reviews the key policy issues which arise for the public sector in considering whether to adopt the PPP procurement route, and the specific application of this policy approach in PPP contracts, comparing international practices in this respect. It offers a systematic and integrated approach to financing PPPs within this public-policy framework, and explains the project-finance techniques used for this purpose. The book deals with both the Concession and PFI models of PPP, and provides a structured introduction for those who are new to the subject, whether in the academic, public-sector, investment, finance or contracting fields, as well as an aide memoire for those developing PPP policies or negotiating PPPs. The author focuses on practical concepts, issues and techniques, and does not assume any prior knowledge of PPP policy issues or financing techniques. The book describes and explains:* The different types of PPPs and how these have developed* Why PPPs are attractive to governments* General policy issues for the public sector in developing a PPP programme* PPP procurement procedures and bid evaluation* The use of project-finance techniques for PPPs* Sources of funding* Typical PPP contracts and sub-contracts, and their relationship with the project's financial structure * Risk assessment from the points of view of the public sector, investors, lenders and other project parties* Structuring the investment and debt financing* The key issues in negotiating a project-finance debt facility. Book Sound Governance

Download or read book Sound Governance written by Ali Farazmand and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2004-12-30 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The economic, political, and cultural forces of globalization affect every citizen of the world—and the institutions that govern them. Against a backdrop of increasing resistance to these forces, especially in the developing world, this volume establishes a new theoretical and practical framework for analyzing the effects of globalization on nation-states, local governments, nongovernmental and international organizations, and other administrative systems. Invoking a term attributed to Darius the Great over 2,500 years ago—sound governance—editors Ali Farazmand and Rosalyn Carter set the stage for a rich and multidimensional collection of essays on emerging issues in public administration around the world. Topics include: The impact and influence of the United Nations; Ethics and accountability in government; Applying the total quality management model to public sector institutions; Judicial and legislative reforms; Business-government partnerships and improvements in the delivery of public services. The result is a comprehensive study of innovations in public administration that will serve as an essential resource for students, researchers, policymakers, and practitioners alike.

Book Brazil and China in Knowledge and Policy Transfer

Download or read book Brazil and China in Knowledge and Policy Transfer written by Osmany Porto de Oliveira and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-10-01 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines knowledge and policy transfer from the perspectives of Brazil and China. It assesses how these two nations have emerged as providers of ideas and models that contribute to the global offer of public policies. With a variety of case studies in areas such as health, food security and infrastructure, the volume offers new insights into the distinct levels through which knowledge and policy transfers take place, including the local, regional, national and supranational. It develops a multidimensional framework of analysis that considers the agents, objects, and mechanisms for knowledge and policy transfer, as well as the structures and timings within which they operate. Unlike previous studies on policy transfer – which largely focus on North-North and North-South learning processes – this book offers an innovative approach to this area of study. By reflecting on the experiences of these two rising powers, it provides fresh insights on the future of knowledge and policy transfer as global power dynamics shift. This interdisciplinary study will appeal to students and scholars of policy transfer, development studies, international relations and public policy.

Book Technology Transfer Intellectual Property and Effective University industry Partnerships

Download or read book Technology Transfer Intellectual Property and Effective University industry Partnerships written by World Intellectual Property Organization and published by WIPO. This book was released on 2007 with total page 51 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study examines and evaluates the recent progress made in seven Asian countries (China, India, Japan, Philippines, the Republic of Korea, Singapore and Thailand) towards more effective and mutually reinforcing relations between universities and industries in the field of scientific and technological research and proposes a checklist for action to make these relationships even more effective from the broad perspective of the national economy. In particular, it highlights the mechanisms adopted by these Asian countries for technology transfer and pays particular attention to the use of the intellectual property system as an instrument for technology transfer from university to industry. While economic and historical situations are different across Asian countries and no simple solution can be found that is universally applicable throughout the region, it is the hope of the participants in this project that this document will provide some useful lessons and insights, and will thus be helpful to policy-makers who are concerned with evaluating the effectiveness of university- industry relations in their respective countries and identifying ways to improve them.
