Book Introducing Surface Roughness to a Stochastic and Rock N Roll Models to Describe Particle Resuspension in Turbulent Flows

This book was released on 2023 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Resuspension phenomenon plays an important role in various environmental and industrial implications. Here we generalize a stochastic resuspension model (Fu et al., 2013) by incorporating a phenomenological adhesion model, which accounts for surface roughness (Rabinovich et al., 2000a) instead of its original interaction model that constructed to smooth surfaces to provide a more realistic description of resuspension. Within this framework, we investigate the influence of stochasticity on the resuspended fraction and explore its dependence on particle size and surface roughness. Our findings show that introducing roughness into a stochastic resuspension scheme results in an increase of the resuspended fraction by an order of magnitude. Additionally, our results underscore the contribution of stochasticity in the resuspension process, in which the noise term enables the inclusion of important but less frequent events that contribute to the resuspension probabilities. We show that the stochastic model displays relatively good agreement with experimental data for different particle sizes, albeit some deviations are observed at low friction velocities. Interestingly, the widely used deterministic Rock'n'Roll model (Reeks & Hall, 2001) presents poor agreement with measurements. However, modifying it by replacing its underlying adhesion scheme through the introduction of roughness, as in the stochastic model, results with a significant improvement in the reconstruction of experimental data, yet to lesser extent compared to the stochastic description.

Book Advances in Particle Adhesion

Download or read book Advances in Particle Adhesion written by Rijmai and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1996-03-18 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years, there has been an upsurge of interest in using techniques drawn from probability to tackle problems in analysis. These applications arise in subjects such as potential theory, harmonic analysis, singular integrals, and the study of analytic functions. This book presents a modern survey of these methods at the level of a beginning Ph.D. student. Highlights of this book include the construction of the Martin boundary, probabilistic proofs of the boundary Harnack principle, Dahlberg's theorem, a probabilistic proof of Riesz' theorem on the Hilbert transform, and Makarov's theorems on the support of harmonic measure. The author assumes that a reader has some background in basic real analysis, but the book includes proofs of all the results from probability theory and advanced analysis required. Each chapter concludes with exercises ranging from the routine to the difficult. In addition, there are included discussions of open problems and further avenues of research.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume documents the proceedings of the Second Symposium on Particles on Surfaces: Detection, Adhesion and Removal held as part of the 19th Annual Meeting of the Fine Particle Society in Santa Clara, California, July 20-25, 1988. The premier symposium on this topic was l organized in 1986 and has been properly chronicled . Based on the success of these two events and the high interest evinced by the technical community, we plan to regularly hold symposia on this topic on a biennial basis and the next one is slated for August 20-24, 1990 in San Diego, California. l As pointed out in the Preface to the first volume , the topic of particles on surfaces is of paramount importance in legion of technological areas. Particularly in the semiconductor device fabrication area, all signals indicate that the understanding of the behavior of particles on surfaces and their removal will attain heightened importance in the times to come. As the device dimensions are shrinking at an accelerated pace, so the benign particles of today will become the killer defects in the not too distant future. The tempo of research and development activity in the field of particles on surfaces is very high, and better and novel ways are continuously being devised to remove smaller and smaller particles.

    Book Details:
  • Author : David J. Quesnel
  • Publisher : CRC Press
  • Release : 2002-02-07
  • ISBN : 9789056997250

Download or read book Particle Adhesion written by David J. Quesnel and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2002-02-07 with total page 546 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Whenever a curved surface interacts with another surface, the principles of adhesion are at work. From the cells in your body to the dust on your glasses, intermolecular forces cause materials to attract one another. Elastic deformations resulting from these adhesive interactions store strain that can be liberated during particle detachment. Time dependent changes in adhesion can result from plastic deformation that both increases the real effective contact area and reduces the stored energy available to assist in particle removal. Processes such as these, based on the fundamentals tenets of particle adhesion, are now finding applications across many disciplines leading to a rich and rapid development of knowledge. This book documents the use of particle adhesion concepts in a variety of disciplines. Fields as varied as the cleaning of semiconductors, to the controlling of cancer metastasis, to the abatement of environmental pollution all benefit from applications of particle adhesion concepts.
