Book excerpt: Decades of research have demonstrated that the parent-child dyad and the environment of the familyâ€"which includes all primary caregiversâ€"are at the foundation of children's well- being and healthy development. From birth, children are learning and rely on parents and the other caregivers in their lives to protect and care for them. The impact of parents may never be greater than during the earliest years of life, when a child's brain is rapidly developing and when nearly all of her or his experiences are created and shaped by parents and the family environment. Parents help children build and refine their knowledge and skills, charting a trajectory for their health and well-being during childhood and beyond. The experience of parenting also impacts parents themselves. For instance, parenting can enrich and give focus to parents' lives; generate stress or calm; and create any number of emotions, including feelings of happiness, sadness, fulfillment, and anger. Parenting of young children today takes place in the context of significant ongoing developments. These include: a rapidly growing body of science on early childhood, increases in funding for programs and services for families, changing demographics of the U.S. population, and greater diversity of family structure. Additionally, parenting is increasingly being shaped by technology and increased access to information about parenting. Parenting Matters identifies parenting knowledge, attitudes, and practices associated with positive developmental outcomes in children ages 0-8; universal/preventive and targeted strategies used in a variety of settings that have been effective with parents of young children and that support the identified knowledge, attitudes, and practices; and barriers to and facilitators for parents' use of practices that lead to healthy child outcomes as well as their participation in effective programs and services. This report makes recommendations directed at an array of stakeholders, for promoting the wide-scale adoption of effective programs and services for parents and on areas that warrant further research to inform policy and practice. It is meant to serve as a roadmap for the future of parenting policy, research, and practice in the United States.

Program effectiveness measurement was illustrated using data collected from a pilot parent-child social skills building group program, 'Raising Positive Thinkers'. The group involved four parent-child dyads and ran for three consecutive weeks, meeting once a week for 90 minutes to introduce, practice and review social skills learned. Quantitative data was collected via pre and post questionnaire using the Social Skills Improvement System rating scale (SSIS). Qualitative data was collected from a focus group at the end of the program. Parent perceptions of the social skills group indicated the group was overall a beneficial experience for themselves and their children. The pre and post questionnaire data did not yield significant findings, whereas the focus group gave beneficial information for future replications of the program. The use of both questionnaires and focus group was constructive in giving a comprehensive analysis of the effectiveness of the program. Parent input was included for future replications of the program."--Abstract.

Book excerpt: The present study explored benefits of the school-based Fast Track Friendship Group social skill training program on familial outcomes for peer-rejected children. Based upon developmental research documenting negative spill-over effects of school-based peer rejection on parent-child and parent-school relationships, we hypothesized that a school-based intervention that improved the child's social skills and peer relations would improve these parental relationships. Specifically, we tested the impact of the intervention on parent-child closeness and on parent perceptions of the way the teacher and school treated their child. In addition, we explored whether these intervention benefits were mediated by school-based intervention improvements in child social skills, student-teacher closeness, or peer liking. Participants included 217 peer-rejected children in grades 1-4 (57% White, 17% Black, 20% Latinx, 5% multiracial; 68% male) who were identified with sociometrics and randomized to intervention or a control group. Parents completed ratings prior to and after the intervention describing parent-child closeness and teacher/school treatment of their child. Multilevel path analyses indicated a significant intervention effect on parent-child closeness, and a moderated intervention effect on parent-school relationship, significant for children in the older grades (grades 3-4) but not the younger grades (grades 1-2). Mediation analyses showed that the intervention effect on parent-child closeness was direct and not significantly mediated by child improvements at school. However, the intervention effect on parent-school relationship was indirect, significantly mediated by improvements in student-teacher relationships and peer liking. Study implications for school-based intervention and future research needs are discussed.

First, there was an experiment in which the independent variable was the behavioral skill levels of parents and their adolescents on a social skills training program and the dependent variable was the parent and adolescent perceptions of their interpersonal relationship regarding communication and problem solving. Second, there was an experiment comparing instructional styles wherein the independent variable was the length of time used to present the social skills training program and the dependent variable was the resulting scores on the behavioral measures of the program. A modified pretest -post-test control group design was used wherein the control group for the first experiment became a portion of the experimental group for the second experiment. There were 43 parent adolescent dyads who volunteered to participate. Of those, 25 of the dyads met the minimum criteria for being included in the analysis. There were 18 dyads analyzed from the experimental group and seven from the control group. Results of the first experiment, regarding the effects of a social skills program on perceived interpersonal relationships, demonstrated that while the parents did perceive an improvement, the adolescents did not. Results of the second experiment demonstrated that the long term program of one skill every week for eight weeks was more effective than the concentrated one week program of two skills per night for four nights.

This book is a kind of status report on what inclusive education has achieved and what it may achieve in the future for children and youth with disabilities.
