If we were to examine the antecedents of these decisions, they would surely emerge as accidents of circumstance--the personal experiences of the researcher, the inspiration of early mentors, the influence of contemporary colleagues--all tempered by the intellectual currents that nurture the researcher's hypotheses. Among the accidents that mold the careers of researchers is geographic location. The culture in which a research program emerges helps determine both its very subject and its method. The primary purpose of this book is to assist those interested in the scientific study of children's social competence in transcending the boundaries imposed both by geography and by selective exposure to the highly diverse schools of thought that have led to interest in this field. Most of these ideas were presented and exchanged at an Advanced Study Institute entitled "Social Competence in Developmental Perspective" held in Savoie, France, in July 1988. This Institute was attended by scholars from France, England, Northern Ireland, Germany, Italy, Norway, Spain, Portugal, Netherlands, Canada, the United States and Brazil. Those who participated will recognize that the metamorphosis from lecture to chapter has necessitated many changes. In order to accommodate the reader who may be unfamiliar with the field, more attention has been paid here to identifying the theoretical contexts of the research described.

Book excerpt: Our understanding of the development of social competence in early childhood is greatly enhanced using an integrated approach merging family systems theory and behavioral genetics. Previous literature suggests that child social competence is influenced by heritable influences (Battaglia et al., 2017), prenatal distress (Carter et al., 2001a; DiPietro et al., 2006; Eichler et al., 2017), and parental responsiveness and hostility (Anthony et al., 2005; Feldman & Masalha, 2010; Hartas, 2011; Kochanska et al., 2008). However, previous literature has often considered the role of these influences separately without considering how these factors can inhibit or increase children's social competence in tandem or as a cascade of negative effects. The main research question of this dissertation is to examine the mechanisms by which children's early environment (prenatal and family) and heritable influences shape the development of social competence. This dissertation uses a longitudinal parent-offspring adoption design to examine two main aims: (1) whether the role of prenatal distress on the development on social competence is a transfer of heritable influences or a pure environmental influence, and (2) examine how children can impact parenting, while considering the role of gene-environment interplay. Structural equation modeling was used to achieve these aims. Results from this dissertation show that prenatal distress was not associated with social competence; however, there were heritable influences on social competence as well as earlier child behaviors (regulation and reactivity) that were associated with social competence at 4.5 years old. Also, results from the second study suggest that children and parents are engaged in a coercive cycle that negatively impact the development of social competence. Additionally, it suggests that family dynamics are either child-led or parent-led, depending on the child behavior being investigated. Taken together these studies support: (1) the necessity of accounting for heritable influences in studies, (2) the importance of considering the child when examining the role of the family, and (3) the implications of the prenatal environment on parenting and child behaviors. By beginning to address these research questions, our research supports the integration of multiple levels of influence in an attempt to not only move closer to elucidating mechanisms of change, but also further understanding the complex nature of the development of social competence.

Children were exposed to either multiple caregivers who performed routine duties in a perfunctory manner with minimal interaction or fewer caregivers who were trained to engage in warm, responsive, and developmentally appropriate interactions during routine care. Engaged and responsive caregivers were associated with substantial improvements in child development and these findings provide a rationale for making similar improvements in other institutions, programs, and organizations.

Book excerpt: "The present study examined the impact of parent and child pain responsiveness, parent and child health, parent and child pain experience, and parenting style on the main outcome variable of social competence of preschool aged children. The conceptual model depicted direct effects of the first seven variables on the main outcome variable, child social competence, as well as indirect effects on child social competence via parenting style. Participants were recruited from 66 preschools operating in the Lower Mainland of British Columbia. A diverse sample of 242 parents, 220 mothers and 22 fathers, of preschool-aged children completed questionnaires measuring parent and child pain responsiveness, parent and child pain experience, parent and child health, parenting style and child social competence. In addition, the recruited child’s preschool teacher completed a questionnaire rating the social competence of the child. Teacher rating questionnaires were completed for 184 children. The analytic process employed a preliminary series of correlational analyses to determine variables to include in model evaluations using parent and teacher rated child social competence as the principal outcome variables. The main analyses involved testing and refinement of the proposed model in a series of structural equation modeling (SEM). Because child social competence was measured using data from both parents and teachers, the modeling exercise was performed separately on each of the parent and teacher outcomes. Three variables from the originally hypothesized model, specifically child pain responsiveness, parent pain experience, and child health were not significantly correlated with the outcome variables. The tested model included parent pain experience, child pain experience, parent health, parenting style and child social competence for each of the parent and teacher models. In the parent model increased child social competence was predicted by decreased child pain experience, increased positive parenting style, and decreased parent pain responsiveness. In the teacher model increased child social competence was predicted by higher parent health directly and indirectly via parenting style. Children with greater negative pain experiences have lower social competency ratings than their peers."--P.ii.
