Book excerpt: Excerpt from Papers on the Political Situation in South Africa: 1885-1895 Form, records of the resolutions passed by that body of Uitlanders and of the Speeches of its leaders, must reveal to future writers much that is important and relevant. The terms of the great Petition which was signed by people and contemptuously disregarded by the will for ever give the lie to the statement, on the Boer that the Uitlanders formulated their demands in such insolent terms as to preclude all possibility of their being granted. The extracts from the address of the Republican Chief Justice, the solemn warnings in the paper written by Mr. J. W. Wessels (now a judge on the Transvaal Bench), and the able analysis of the Republican Constitution by Advocate Auret, printed originally as appendices to my statement for the House of Commons Committee, should be of great value to students of South African history; To make these papers accessible, I am causing them to be reprinted, at my own expense, so that they may be placed on the shelves of every library in South Africa and of some libraries in Great Britain. Download or read book Noteworthy Families written by Francis Galton and published by Good Press. This book was released on 2023-08-22 with total page 89 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Noteworthy Families stands as a seminal collection rooted in the nascent field of eugenics, a movement that significantly influenced the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The anthology navigates through the biographical sketches of notable families to explore the hereditary aspects of genius, thereby providing a diverse array of literary styles ranging from the analytical to the narratively engaging. It is notable for its attempt to blend scientific inquiry with literary exposition, thereby occupying a unique place in the annals of both scientific and literary history. The diversity within the collection reflects a broader discourse on heredity versus environment, making it a significant piece for scholars and enthusiasts alike. Francis Galton and Edgar Schuster's collaborative effort in Noteworthy Families brings together a range of intellectual achievements and hypotheses that shaped the early discourse on genetic inheritance and eugenics. Their backgroundsGalton as a polymath influential in the development of early psychological testing and statistics, and Schusters contributions to geneticsmirror the collection's foundational premise. Aligning with both the historical context and the scientific zeitgeist of their times, their work exemplifies the interdisciplinary approach that marked much of early genetic research. The anthology thus offers a fascinating glimpse into the historical and cultural dynamics that informed early 20th-century scientific investigation. This collection is essential for anyone interested in the intersections of literature, history, and science. It offers an unparalleled window into the early conversations surrounding genetics, eugenics, and the legacy of intellectual achievement. Furthermore, Noteworthy Families invites readers to critically engage with the ideas presented, fostering a deeper understanding of how scientific beliefs are influenced by and reflect their social and historical contexts. For scholars, students, and general readers alike, this anthology serves not only as a compendium of influential familial legacies but also as a testament to the evolving discourse on heredity and genius.

Download or read book By elections in British Politics 1832 1914 written by Thomas G. Otte and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Explores the many issues surrounding by-elections in the period which saw the extension of the franchise, the introduction of the ballot, and the demise of most dual member constituencies. Between the 1832 Great Reform Act and the outbreak of World War One in 1914, over 2,600 by-elections took place in Britain. They were triggered by the death, retirement or resignation of sitting MPs or by the appointment of cabinet ministers and were a regular feature of Victorian and Edwardian politics. They furnished political parties and their leaders with a crucial tool for gauging and mobilising public opinion. Yet despite the prominence of by-election contests in the historical records of this period, scholars have paid relatively little attention to them. As this book shows, these elections deserve to be taken as seriously today as people took them at the time. They providedimportant linkages between local and national politics, between the four parts of the United Kingdom and Westminster, and between foreign and domestic affairs. They are vital to understanding the evolving electioneering machineries, the varying language of electoral contests, the traction that particular issues had with a growing and frequently volatile electorate, and the fluctuating fortunes of the political parties. This book, consisting of original work by leading political historians, provides the first synoptic study of this important subject. It will be required reading for historians and students of modern British political history, as well as specialists in electoralhistory and politics. T. G. Otte is Professor of Diplomatic History at the University of East Anglia. He is the author and/or editor of some thirteen books. Among the most recent is The Foreign Office Mind: The Making of British Foreign Policy, 1865-1914; Paul Readman is Senior Lecturer in Modern British History at King's College London. He is the author of Land and Nation in England: Patriotism, National Identity and the Politics of Land 1880-1914. Contributors: Luke Blaxill, Angus Hawkins, Geoffrey Hicks, Phillips Payson O'Brien, T.G. Otte, Ian Packer, Gordon Pentland, Paul Readman, Kathryn Rix, Matthew Roberts, Philip Salmon, Anthony Taylor
