This book was released on 2018-01-18 with total page 620 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Convocation Addresses of the Universities of Bombay and Madras The princely benefactions of the citizens of Bombay deserve the highest commendation and may probably, if widely known in this Presidency, create a similar spirit among the wealthy of my countrymen. I have had to omit three addresses of the Madras University, those delivered in and 1867, the first and the last as I could not secure copies of them, and the second agreeably to the resolution of the Senate that the publication of it was not in keeping with the general policy of the University in such matters. To facilitate reference, I have given marginal head ings and an index to each of the parts. I regret sanction was not given to me to publish the Addresses of the Chancellors and the Vice Chancellors of the Calcutta University. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The story of The Making of India begins in the seventeenth century, when a small seafaring island, one tenth the size of the Indian subcontinent, despatched sailing ships over 11,000 miles on a five-month trading journey in search of new opportunities. In the end they helped build a new nation. The sheer audacity and scale of such an endeavour, the courage and enterprise, have no parallel in world history. This book is the first to assess in a single volume almost all aspects of Britain's remarkable contribution in providing India with its lasting institutional and physical infrastructure, which continues to underpin the world's largest democracy in the twenty-first century.

Book Science and the Indian Tradition

Download or read book Science and the Indian Tradition written by David L. Gosling and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2007-09-12 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new text is a detailed study of an important process in modern Indian history. During the late nineteenth and early twentieth century, India experienced an intellectual renaissance, which owed as much to the influx of new ideas from the West as to traditional religious and cultural insights. Gosling examines the effects of the introduction of Western science into India, and the relationship between Indian traditions of thought and secular Western scientific doctrine. He charts the early development of science in India, its role in the secularization of Indian society, and the subsequent reassertion, adaptation and rejection of traditional modes of thought. The beliefs of key Indian scientists, including Jagadish Chandra Bose, P.C. Roy and S.N. Bose are explored and the book goes on to reflect upon how individual scientists could still accept particular religious beliefs such as reincarnation, cosmology, miracles and prayer. Science and the Indian Tradition gives an in-depth assessment of results of the introduction of Western science into India, and will be of interest to scholars of Indian history and those interested in the interaction between Western and Indian traditions of intellectual thought.
