Book excerpt: Excerpt from Papers, Vol. 4: On Subjects Connected With the Duties of the Corps of Royal Engineers The subject of this Memoir is the late Captain Thomas Drummond, and the object with which it is placed here is an endeavour to show that talent and exertion need never despair of reward. Military habits and organization are conducive to the best interests of society, even during a period of the profoundest peace; and the duties of the Corps of Engineers in particular are of a nature which, in this age of general im provement, should always render its members useful to the community and the Govern ment; but for this purpose exertion and study are necessary: the mere punctual performance of routine duties will never purchase distinction. It is eminently in this view the example of Captain Drummond may be useful, that it may afford hope and encouragement, and show that earnest devotion to professional pursuits is our best interest as well as our duty. Captain Drummond was born at Edinburgh, in October, 1797. He was the second of three sons, and his father died while he was yet an infant, after which his mother removed to Musselburgh, a Village in the neighbourhood, where she resided many years, devoting herself entirely to her children. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Papers on Subjects Connected With the Duties of the Corps of Royal Engineers, Vol. 14: Contributed by Officers of the Royal Engineers Papers II, IV, and part of V, were read and discussed at the occasional meetings commenced at the War Office in the present year. The short-hand writer unfortunately lost a large portion of his notes of the discussion on Paper II. These meetings are about to recommence, and officers having Papers they wish to read or to be read are requested to communicate with me as soon as possible. A considerable portion of the sum subscribed at the commencement of the year for conducting the meetings being still unexpended, it will be unnecessary to ask for new subscriptions for the year 1866. This book was released on 2018-02-10 with total page 546 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Papers on Subjects Connected With the Duties of the Corps of Royal Engineers, Vol. 5 The effect of the increase in the funds is visible in the present Volume, as I have been able to employ Draughtsmen to prepare Drawings of various Machines, well worthy the attention of my Brother Officers, but which, without such increase, I should never have been able to procure. The number of Plates has also been in creased far beyond those of any preceding Volume; and I hope now, with like means at my disposal, to keep the Volume always up to the present standard. There may be many instances also in which Officers having objects of interest in their immediate neighbourhood, will not have time or opportunity to make the necessary Drawings in such cases I should be too glad to defray the expense of employing Draughtsmen to execute those Drawings on a scale proper for the Work; and by so doing I hope to secure reports and descriptions of various works useful to us in every point of View. With regard to the Papers contained in this Volume few remarks are necessary. It will be seen that there are two Plates containing plans and Sections of works at the Island of Ascension: I hoped to have been able to give in this Volume the conclusion of the Paper commenced in Vol. IV. By Captain brandreth; but he not having been able (owing to the multiplicity of duties thrown upon him in his present situation under the Admiralty) to complete the letter-press, I have inserted the Plates in this Volume, as they were already printed; and the letter-press will be given in the next. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Papers on Subjects Connected With the Duties of the Corps of Royal Engineers, Vol. 5: Contributed by Officer of the Royal Engineers and Hon. East India Company's Engineers It is due to the Subscribers to this Volume to state that, although it contains only five papers relative to the operations of the war lately terminated, every effort has been made to obtain Notes on this subject, the interest in which is so much increased by reflecting upon the large number of our brother officers (viz., fourteen), who have fallen during its continuance, of whose gallantry and science such records form lasting memorials, whilst they also afford glorious examples to those who remain, as well as most valuable guidance to enable us to profit by the experience gained in actual warfare with the arms and missiles employed at the present time. The Official Journals of the Operations in the Crimea are not yet ready for publication, and the almost unprecedented and harassing amount of duty in the trenches, consequent upon the smallness of the number of our brother officers present, has probably prevented their writing any Papers on the subject for this Volume. This book was released on 2018-03-09 with total page 390 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Papers on Subjects Connected With the Duties of the Corps of Royal Engineers, Vol. 2 It is not a sufficient reason, that the principles of defensive fortification should remain unstudied in England, because we have no great internal fortresses, and because we rely on our maritime superiority. We have colonies to defend; we have our naval arsenals to protect; which, while an object of great importance, is rendered more difficult than ever from the extended application of steam power to shipping generally. As our fortifications are limited, and we have not, as other nations, specimens of the defensive art constantly before us, it is more especially necessary that the principles upon which they are constructed should be perfectly under stood. We are too apt to follow servilely the rules dogmatically laid down in the published works on the art of fortification, while our business should be, to apply the general principles of the art to a species of fortification suited to the circum stances of our country. In the smaller description of forts required for the defence of harbours and colonies, all the true principles of defence must be kept in view; whilst at the same time it is necessary to adapt their size to small garrisons at all times, whether of peace or war, so that they may not be found cumbrous to the country. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Papers on Subjects Connected With the Duties of the Corps of Royal Engineers, Vol. 17 The Editor has to apologise to the Subscribers for the late appearance of the present Volume. A lack of matter early in the year, and a press of it at the close, have been the causes of delay. Lord Napier, of Magdala, had intended to have contributed an article on the Abyssinian Campaign, but in consequence of the India Office having determined to publish an account of the expedition, he felt obliged to forego his intention: as it is, there are two papers on the subject.
