Book Phonetic Interpretation

Download or read book Phonetic Interpretation written by John Local and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2004-02-12 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 2003, Phonetic Interpretation presents innovative work from four core areas: phonological representations and the lexicon, phonetic interpretation and phrasal structure, phonetic interpretation and syllable structure, and phonology and natural speech production. Written by major figures in the fields of phonetics, phonology and speech perception, the chapters in this volume use a wide range of laboratory and instrumental techniques to analyse the production and perception of speech, their aim being to explore the relationship between the sounds of speech and the linguistic organisation that lies behind that. The chapters present evidence of the lively intellectual engagement of laboratory phonology practitioners with the complexities and richness of human language. The book continues the tradition of the series, Papers in Laboratory Phonology, by bringing linguistic theory to bear on an essential problem of linguistics: the relationship between mental models and the physical nature of speech.

Book Selected Papers from SinFonIJA 3

Download or read book Selected Papers from SinFonIJA 3 written by Maja Marković and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2013-02-21 with total page 275 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present volume is a selection of papers presented at the SinFoniJa 3 conference, held at the University of Novi Sad in October 2010. A wide range of linguistics-related topics were covered at this event, and the selection before you represents the variety and quality of research the editors wish to promote. It aims to uphold sound linguistic theorizing as the basis of natural language analysis and cutting-edge applied-linguistics concerns. Among the novel linguistic topics in the fields of syntax, phonology, semantics and natural language processing, the book includes (re)analyses of negative imperatives; constructions with multiple occurrences of the semantically interdependent indefinite expressions; future constructions; verbal categories; demonstrative reinforcers; word order and clitic doubling; control constituents; non-final information focus; clitic placement, named entity recognition; prosody prediction in speech synthesis; and covers data from various languages inlcuding English, Polish, Turkic, Bulgarian, Slovenian, Serbian and others. In addition, the research presented here shows why the assumptions regarding the interfaces of these domains, which we often take for granted, require solid empirical grounding.

Book excerpt: Tone: A Linguistic Survey is a nine-chapter text that considers the phonetics and phonology of tone from both a synchronic and a diachronic point of view. The first chapters deal with the physiological and perceptual correlations of tone. These chapters also describe the interactions of tonal and nontonal features. The succeeding chapters provide the phonetic basis for phonological tonal phenomena. These topics are followed by discussions of the physical and physiological aspects of tone, the number of possible contrastive tones in a language, and a suprasegmental representation of tones based on linguistic evidence. This text also summarizes the kinds of tone rules found in languages and the important syntactic function played by tone in a number of the world’s languages, particularly those in Africa. The final chapters look into the general and specific principles that constrain historical tone change. This book will prove useful to students with phonology course.

Book excerpt: From Language to Discourse contains selected texts from the 6th and 7th Linguistics Sharing Forums, which took place at the Faculty of Social and Human Sciences of Universidade Nova de Lisboa, on 25th November 2011 and 23rd November 2012, respectively. The articles included in this volume present the results of ongoing research in different domains of linguistics, such as phonology, language acquisition, syntax, and terminology. It is important to mention that these papers should be seen as work in progress, given that the young researchers who authored them are not yet PhD degree holders. However, all articles have been evaluated by an academic committee prior to publication. In addition, this book also includes the publication of two papers authored by João Costa, and Maria Antónia Coutinho, senior researchers of the Linguistics Centre of the Universidade Nova de Lisboa (CLUNL).
