Book excerpt: I would like to bring to your attention my historical monograph dedicated to the first French automobile company, Panhard and Levassor, which consists of two volumes. The first volume (120 pages) covers the period from the mid-19th century, before the company, then called Perin et Cie., began producing cars, and ended with the death of Emile Levassor in April 1897. The second volume (270 pages) ends with the outbreak of the First World War in 1914. In France, this period is called La Belle Epoque. In America, this automotive era is known as the Brass Era. In my book, I describe in detail the entire technical evolution of Panhard and Levassor, throughout which the company went from producing furniture, wood, and metalworking machines, to the most advanced automobiles in the world. Starting as a furniture workshop, Panhard and Levassor grew into the world's largest automotive company in the early 20th century. The book uses archival documents from Panhard and Levassor, kindly provided to me by Philippe Krebs and the archives at the Centre d'archives de Terre Blanche, as well as the French Patent Office (INPI). I am also grateful to Bernard Vermeylen for the advice he provided. In my research, I used a multitude of French, American, and English books and magazines from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Among them are French magazines La Locomotion, La Vie Automobile, Omnia, and La Vie au grand air, British publications The Autocar and The Automotor Journal, and American magazines The Horseless Age and The Automobile, among others. The book contains hundreds of illustrations, many of which are unique and have not been published anywhere else. For example, at my request, workers at the Revs Museum in Florida photographed an 1896 Panhard and Levassor engine and transmission.

Book excerpt: This book is based on archival documents of the Panhard and Levassor automobile company, as well as magazines, newspapers and books from France, the USA and England of the late 19th and early 20th centuries.I used photographs and reproductions from magazines and books of those years, as well as numerous photographs from modern museums and exhibitions. I personally photographed items in French museums and used them for this book. If you asked which country had made the greatest contribution to the international auto industry at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, you might be surprised to find out that it was neither the USA, Japan, Germany nor England, but France! France was the country where the automotive industry was born and it became the pacesetter for every other country in the late 19th and early 20th century. According to statistics (James Laux, "The European Automobile Industry"), in 1903, 14,100 cars were produced in France, 11,325 in the USA, 2,000 in England, 1,450 in Germany, and 225 in Italy. So, at the time, France produced more automobiles than any other country. Impressive!

Book excerpt: The Automobile traces the evolution of one of the most influential inventions of our time. This volume explains the scientific processes that propelled each stage in the development of the "horseless carriage" and what changes those early versions of the car brought to our culture. As readers follow Henry Ford's great promise to bring affordable cars to everyone, they will learn how the revolutionary techniques of mass production changed modern society and led to the proliferation of the automobile, the automotive industry, and the vast system of roads and highways on which we depend. The Automobile also examines the ways transportation has affected safety and manufacturing laws and brings the reader into the present by discussing the energy crisis and what innovations are being made to automobiles today.
