Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This fundamental study offers a reconstruction of the social world in which pottery was manufactured, distributed and used in ancient Palestine. Part I concludes that ceramic wares in the Bronze and Iron Ages were mass-produced for commercial sale by small workshops, probably family owned and operated. The technological level was high, with potters' wheels and permanent kilns being used. Part II argues that ceramic styles were rapidly spread throughout Palestine, primarily by itinerant merchants who sold ordinary household wares over great distances.

Book The History of the Jewish People in the Age of Jesus Christ Volume 2

Download or read book The History of the Jewish People in the Age of Jesus Christ Volume 2 written by Emil Schürer and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2014-01-30 with total page 625 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Emil Schürer's Geschichte des judischen Volkes im Zeitalter Jesu Christi, originally published in German between 1874 and 1909 and in English between 1885 and 1891, is a critical presentation of Jewish history, institutions, and literature from 175 B.C. to A.D. 135. It has rendered invaluable services to scholars for nearly a century. The present work offers a fresh translation and a revision of the entire subject-matter. The bibliographies have been rejuvenated and supplemented; the sources are presented according to the latest scholarly editions; and all the new archaeological, epigraphical, numismatic and literary evidence, including the Dead Sea Scrolls and the Bar Kokhba documents, has been introduced into the survey. Account has also been taken of the progress in historical research, both in the classical and Jewish fields. This work reminds students of the profound debt owed to nineteenth-century learning, setting it within a wider framework of contemporary knowledge, and provides a foundation on which future historians of Judaism in the age of Jesus may build.

Book Through the Ages in Palestinian Archaeology

Download or read book Through the Ages in Palestinian Archaeology written by Walter E. Rast and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 1992-11-01 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The public s continuing fascination with Near Eastern archaeology has often been frustrated by highly technical and specialized studies. This volume masterfully rectifies that situation. Here, in concise and readable form, is a comprehensive introduction to Palestinian archaeology (the region encompassed by the State of Israel, the West Bank, and the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan) from the Stone Age to the Islamic period. Readers are provided with clear explanations of unfamiliar terms, geographical locations, dates, archaeological procedures, links with biblical text, and the like. Photo illustrations enhance the presentation throughout. Selected bibliographies for each chapter direct readers to appropriate resources for additional information. Through the Ages of Palestinian Archaeology constitutes a handy reference both for those already familiar with archaeology and for those who know little of why archaeologists do what they do and what can be learned from their work and their discoveries. Walter E. Rast is Professor in the Department of Theology at Valparaiso University in Indiana. He is second vice-president of the American Schools of Oriental Research and former editor of the Bulletin of the American Schools of Oriental Research. With R. Thomas Schaub, he is author/editor of The Expedition to the Dead Sea Plain Series whose first volume, Bab ed-Dhra, is now in print.

Book Politics and Palestinian Literature in Exile

Download or read book Politics and Palestinian Literature in Exile written by Joseph Farag and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2016-11-14 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite, or even because of their tumultuous history, Palestinians are renowned for being prolific cultural producers, creating many of the Arab world's most iconic works of literature. In particular, the Palestinian short story stands out for its unique interplay between literary texts and the political and historical contexts from which they emerge. Palestinian Literature in Exile is the first English language study to explore this unique genre. Joseph Farag employs an interdisciplinary approach to examine the political function of literary texts and the manner in which cultural production responds to crucial moments in Palestinian history. Drawing from the works of Samira Azzam, Ghassan Kanafani and Ibrahim Nasrallah, Farag traces developments in the short story as they relate to the pivotal events of what the Palestinians call the Nakba ('catastrophe'), Naksa ('defeat') and First Intifada ('uprising'). In analysing several as yet un-translated works, Farag makes an original contribution to the subject of exilic identity and subjectivity in Palestinian literature. This book offers the opportunity to engage with literary works as well to learn from a literary account of history. It is a subject of interest for students and scholars of both Arabic literature and Middle East studies.
