Its Argument Structure and the Compounding Straitjacket is a comprehensive study of the rich system of nominal compounds in Turkish. This language builds compounds in an enormous diversity of forms and shapes, ranging from extremely simple forms to much more complex and at the same time structurally less transparent types of construction. This diversity is not limited to internal complexity as such, but is also determined by the immense variety in the types of complement the head noun of a compound may take. In linguistic theory it is generally assumed that verbs are lexically coded for a number of arguments. It is also believed by some theoreticians that a noun derived through nominalization has one or more inherited arguments. This book shows on both semantic as well as morphological grounds that for Turkish such a stance is untenable, and also that the enormous range of patterns we find in complements can be accounted for in a relatively simple way by assuming that noun phrases, clauses and sentences can be captured by one unifying notion. This leads to the insight that a seemingly wide variety of constructions form one class as a result of the morphological process of compounding, rather than analyzing them syntactically.Furthermore, this study includes a discussion of the questions: why does Turkish have such an extremely productive system of compound formation that virtually knows no limits with respect to both complexity as well as expressibility, and secondly, how does this system relate to theoretical alternatives such as adjectivization?

The essays in this volume examine the interaction between Christianity and Islam in medieval Anatolia through three distinct angles, opening with a substantial introduction by the editors to explain both the research background and the historical problem, making the work accessible to scholars from other fields. The first group of essays examines the Christian experience of living under Muslim rule, comparing their experiences in several of the major Islamic states of Anatolia between the eleventh and fifteenth centuries, especially the Seljuks and the Ottomans. The second set of essays examines encounters between Christianity and Islam in art and intellectual life. They highlight the ways in which some traditions were shared across confessional divides, suggesting the existence of a common artistic and hence cultural vocabulary. The founding elite took up a massive project of social engineering that now required the amplification of Turkishness as an essential concept of the new nation-state. The construction of Others served as a backdrop to the articulation of Turkishness –and for Turkey in many ways, the Arab in his keffiyeh and traditional garb constituted the ultimate Other. In this nuanced and richly detailed study, Ilkim Büke Okyar brings the everyday production of nationalist discourse into the mainstream political and historical narrative of modern Turkey. Okyar shifts the focus of inquiry from the abstract discourses of elite intellectuals to the visual rhetoric of popular culture, where Arabs as the non-national Others hold a front seat. Drawing upon previously neglected colloquial Turkish sources, Okyar challenges the notion that ethnoreligious stereotypes of Arabs are limited to the Western conception of the Other. She shows how the emergence of the printing press and the subsequent explosion of news media contributed to formulating the Arab as the binary opposite of the Turk. The book shows how the cartoon press became one of the most significant platforms in the construction, maintenance, and mobilization of Turkish nationalism through the perceived image of the Arab that was haunted forever by ethnic and religious origins.

Focusing on families of the new middle class in Istanbul, the authors of this study address questions about the social construction of middle-class reality in the context of the rapid changes that have come about through recent economic growth in global markets and the global diffusion of information technology. After 1980, Turkey saw a structural transformation from state-owned and managed industry, banking, and media and communications to privatization and open markets. The idea of being middle class and the reality of middle-class practices became open for negotiation and interpretation. This study therefore offers a particularly interesting case study of an emergent global phenomenon known as the transnational middle class, characterized by their location of work in globalizing cities, development of transnational social networks, sumptuary consumption habits, and residences in gated communities. As the authors show, this new middle class associates quality education, followed by property and lifestyle issues, with the concept of a comfortable life.
