Download or read book Overcoming the Brightness Ceiling for Mechanical Pulps Prepared from Blue stained Lodgepole Pine Chips written by Thomas Qiuxiong Hu and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 29 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The initial brightness of pulps prepared from chip blends containing mountain pine beetle-infested, blue-stained lodgepole pine (LPP) is lower than that of pulps made frfrom green LPP chips. This report presents the results of a Paprican/University of British Columbia project to develop a novel, cost effective approach to brightening mechanical pulps prepared from the blue-stained LPP chips.

Book Sodium Dithionite Rongalite And Thiourea Oxides Chemistry And Application

Download or read book Sodium Dithionite Rongalite And Thiourea Oxides Chemistry And Application written by Sergei V Makarov and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2016-08-25 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sodium Dithionite, Rongalite and Thiurea Oxides provides an in depth overview of historical and newly developed fields of application for important sulfur-containing reductants. It begins with an introduction into the structure and general properties of sodium dithionite, sodium hydroxymethanesulfinate (rongalite) and thiourea oxides. Following this there is analysis of their stability in different types of solutions, and reactions with both organic and inorganic compounds. Finally, there is description of the application of the reductants in industry, using examples of the textile, printing and paper industries, as well as in polymerization processes.Despite widespread practical application, the mechanism behind these compounds is not fully understood, due to their unusual structure and complex decomposition within solutions. This comprehensive review presents up-to-date findings to both academics and industrial chemists, aiming to increase knowledge and provide both fundamental and technical data dedicated to these relatively simple chemicals which have wide practical applications.

Book Cost Implications for Thermomechanical Pulping and Brightening of Blue stained Chips

Download or read book Cost Implications for Thermomechanical Pulping and Brightening of Blue stained Chips written by Thomas Qiuxiong Hu and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 27 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lodgepole pine (Pinus contorta Dougl.) forests make up approximately 35% of British Columbia's forested land base and accounty for 25% of the province's total volume harvested. Mountain pine beetle (Dendroctonus ponderosae Hopk.) is currently B. C.'s most devastating forest insect and it has wrought more destruction in mature lodgepole pine forests than any other forest insect. In an attempt to deal with the pine beetle infestation, an accelerated harvesting of pine stands damaged with this insect has been ordered by B. C. Ministry of Forests throughout the north central part of the province. Mature lodgepole pine trees attacked by the pine beetle are afflicted through the introduction of Ophiostoma piliferum, a fungus that causes blue stain in the sapwood. This preliminary study was undertaken to quantify the costs associated with thermechanical and chemithermomechanical pulping and brightening the mechanical pulps produced from blue-stained and sound lodgepole pine chips.--Document.

Book Assessing the Influence of Time since death

Download or read book Assessing the Influence of Time since death written by Barbara Dalpke and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study is part of a series of research papers that explore the biological, social, and economic aspects of British Columbia's mountain pine beetle (MPB) epidemic. It presents the results of pilot plant Kraft and mechanical pulping trials that were conducted to determine the influence of time-since-death (TSD) of (MPB)-killed lodgepole pine on pulping and pulp quality. Samples included trees of red, grey and late grey attack stages as well as unattacked trees; sample sites were established in three different biogeoclimatic subzones in British Columbia in order to account for natural variability. Prior to pulping, samples were tested for wood and fibre properties as well as chip quality. Kraft and thermomechanical (TMP) pulping parameters were monitored, pulp quality was determined, and sheet structure was evaluated by scanning electron microscopy.--Includes text from document.

Book The Mountain Pine Beetle

Download or read book The Mountain Pine Beetle written by Pacific Forestry Centre and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This book presents a synthesis of published information on mountain pine beetle (Dendroctonus ponderosae Hopkins [Coleoptera: Scolytidae]) biology and management with an emphasis on lodgepole pine (Pinus contorta Dougl. ex Loud. var. latifolia Engelm.) forests of western Canada. Intended as a reference for researchers as well as forest managers, the book covers three main subject areas: mountain pine beetle biology, management, and socioeconomic concerns. The chapters on biology cover taxonomy, life history and habits, distribution, insect-host tree interactions, development and survival, epidemiology, and outbreak history. The management section covers management strategy, survey and detection, proactive and preventive management, and decision support tools. The chapters on socioeconomic aspects include an economic examination of management programs and the utilization of post-beetle salvage timber in solid wood, panelboard, pulp and paper products."--Publisher's description.

Book Kiln Drying of Lumber

Download or read book Kiln Drying of Lumber written by R.B. Keey and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 331 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At present, no single book adequately covers a basic understanding of wood book satisfies the need for such a work. It describes drying in practice. This the fundamental basis of kiln-drying technology, to enable forest companies to imFrove their drying operations as high-quality timbers become scarcer and of yesteryear can no longer be tolerated. Adaptive the wasteful practices is no longer good enough. Innovations change based on past experience of the material being dried and the processes require a sound understanding of drying. Newer techniques, such as the use of ultrahigh temperature sea soning and superheated steam under vacuum, require an even greater depth of physical understanding for these methods to be used effectively and economically. book provides a description of modern ideas about wood structure, This moisture movement and stress development, from which models of the drying process are developed to give the kiln operator important information about the course of drying under specified conditions, and thus a means is compared with practice wherever for rational process improvement. Theory possible.
