In a positive, non-condemning way, Anderson provides an alternative model of recovery for substance and alcohol abusers, a model that will also work for individuals struggling with other kinds of addictions. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a lively exploration of the amazing revelation known to Mormons as the “Word of Wisdom.” It counsels us how and what we should eat to reach our highest potential, both physically and spiritually. New and surprising insights are presented through the perspective of what has been proven to be the healthiest human diet, a way of eating supported both by history and by science: a whole food, plant-based (WFPB) diet. WFPB vegetarian diets have been scientifically proven to both prevent and cure chronic disease, help you achieve your maximum physical potential, and make it easy to reach and maintain your ideal weight. In this book, you’ll find the stories of dozens of people who are enjoying the blessings of following a Word of Wisdom diet, and you’ll get concrete advice on how to get started! You will discover: What we should and should not eat to enjoy maximum physical health. How food is intimately connected to our spiritual well being. Why Latter-day Saints are succumbing to the same chronic diseases as the rest of the population, despite not smoking, drinking, or doing drugs. How the Word of Wisdom was designed specifically for our day. How you can receive the “hidden treasures” and other blessings promised in the Word of Wisdom. Why eating the foods God has ordained for our use is better not just for our bodies, but for the animals and for the earth. You may think you know what the Word of Wisdom says, but you’ll be amazed at what you have missed. Learn why Mormons all over the world are “waking up” to the Word of Wisdom!

Book Helping Others Overcome Addictions

Download or read book Helping Others Overcome Addictions written by Steve McVey and published by Harvest House Publishers. This book was released on 2012-08-01 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Does Christianity have an answer for addiction? As longtime pastor Mike Quarles’s alcoholism worsened over eight years, churches and Christians referred him to treatment, 12-Step programs, therapy...nothing worked. Steve McVey, also a pastor, repeatedly dished out the same advice Mike received, with similarly poor results... ...Until, in their frustration, God led them back to basic, addiction-breaking truths of His Word. The authors explain these for readers who want to help someone or who struggle themselves, because freedom from addiction is found only when Christians fully believe what God says about their identity move beyond the 12-Step concept of inescapable “addict identity” stop harboring unforgiveness, get radically right with God, and dwell in who they are in Christ, which excludes engaging in addictive behaviors as a lifestyle Material on codependency is included, as is information on implementing recovery/support groups for those leaving addiction and starting to live in God’s glorious freedom.

Book Broken Chains

    Book Details:
  • Author : Randy Nurmi
  • Publisher : WestBow Press
  • Release : 2011-01-14
  • ISBN : 1449705863
  • Pages : 185 pages

Download or read book Broken Chains written by Randy Nurmi and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2011-01-14 with total page 185 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Broken Chains: Principle to Overcoming Addiction is written for the individual who is caught in a lifestyle of bondage to sin and fear. It is also designed for anyone who has a loved one struggling with sins of this type and have a desire to educate, assist, and support him according to Gods Word. This book does not focus on motivational methods, but instead focuses on the foundational truths of Gods Word and its total sufficiency for solving all the problems facing man. This books purpose is to build hope for both the struggling addict and those who desire to help him through practical principles of faith, hope, and love through Jesus Christ. Individuals who are lost in the valley of addiction frequently ask God to remove the painful trial and its consequences for selfish reasons. Nevertheless, this time of trial, tribulation, and revelation of their true nature and character can be grasped as an opportunity to explore and expand their newfound faith and freedom in Christ. The hope for these lessons would be to build an understanding and confidence for tackling everyday issues and provide encouragement to persevere as trials are overcome and victories are achieved on an every day basis. Success in overcoming the battle of addiction will depend on the individual acknowledging Christs ability alone to set him free from bondage to sin and fear, thereby breaking the chains of addictions. After 20 years of suffering, being full of pride and arrogance, lost in a dark and lonely world, and having the experience of trying time and time again to change myself through people, places, and things, I finally had a solitary but failed attempt at suicide. Christ Jesus was finally allowed to pour down His Mercy upon me and I was given the gifts of His Grace, Faith, Repentance, and Redemption and I was changed into a new man that was created according to God in true righteousness and holiness. It was after this event that I received my calling from the Lord and He gifted me with a tremendous healing of the mind and the ability to remember His Holy Scriptures. I have sought to make Christ Jesus my Lord known to all men as I have come to know Him ever since. I have had the privilege of having the Lord educate and equip me for the last 25 years as a Pastor. The Lord has used numerous individuals, various Biblical courses and trainings, drug and alcohol education, and time of my own suffering in Christ to expand His purpose and plan for my life. Psalm 12:6-7: The words of the Lord are pure words, like silver tried in a furnace of earth, purified seven times. You shall keep them, O Lord, You shall preserve them from this generation forever.

Book The Twelve Steps and the Sacraments

Download or read book The Twelve Steps and the Sacraments written by Scott Weeman and published by Ave Maria Press. This book was released on 2017-11-10 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of a 2018 Catholic Press Association Award: Sacraments. (Second Place). In the first book to directly integrate the Twelve Steps with the practice of Catholicism, Scott Weeman, founder and director of Catholic in Recovery, pairs his personal story with compassionate straight talk to show Catholics how to bridge the commonly felt gap between the Higher Power of twelve-step programs and the merciful God that he rediscovered in the heart of the sacraments. Weeman entered sobriety from alcohol and drugs on October 10, 2011, and he's made it his full-time ministry to help others who struggle with various types of addiction to find spiritual wholeness through Catholic in Recovery, an organization he founded and directs. In The Twelve Steps and the Sacraments, Weeman candidly tackles the struggle he and other addicts have with getting to know intimately the unnamed Higher Power of recovery. He shares stories of his compulsion to find a personal relationship with God and how his tentative steps back to the Catholic Church opened new doors of healing and brought him surprising joy as he came to know Christ in the sacraments. Catholics in recovery and those moving toward it, as well as the people who love them will recognize Weeman's story and his spiritual struggle to personally encounter God. He tells us how: Baptism helps you admit powerlessness over an unmanageable problem, face your desperate need for God, and choose to believe in and submit to God’s mercy. Reconciliation affirms and strengthens the hard work of examining your life, admitting wrongs, and making amends. The Eucharist provides ongoing sustenance and draws you to the healing power of Christ. The graces of Confirmation strengthen each person to keep moving forward and to share the good news of recovery and new life in Christ. Weeman's words are boldly challenging and brimming with compassion and through them you will discover inspiration, hope, sage advice, and refreshingly practical help.

Overcoming Pornography Addiction presents the practical way in which the teaching of the church can move us from sin to grace, from pain to healing, through an honest appraisal of the pain of internet pornography and the wonderful beauty of grace and virtue. This work also places the treatment of the topic in the context of a familiar gospel story of Jesus with the woman of Samaria, who herself has suffered much at the hands of many men. Using familiar images, popular teaching, and incorporating an understanding of addiction and human sexuality, this work appreciates the struggle of persons suffering from internet pornography use and recognizes their human dignity and worth. +

Book Teachings of Presidents of the Church Brigham Young

Download or read book Teachings of Presidents of the Church Brigham Young written by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and published by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. This book was released on with total page 470 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The prophet Brigham Young taught the restored gospel of Jesus Christ in a basic, practical way that gave inspiration and hope to the Saints struggling to build a home in the wilderness. Though more than a century has now passed, his words are still fresh and appropriate for us today as we continue the work of building the kingdom of God. President Young declared that as members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints we possess the “doctrine of life and salvation for all the honest-in-heart” (DBY, 7). He promised that those who receive the gospel in their hearts will have awakened “within them a desire to know and understand the things of God more than they ever did before in their lives” and will begin to “inquire, read and search and when they go to their Father in the name of Jesus he will not leave them without a witness” (DBY, 450). This book reflects the desire of the First Presidency and the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles to deepen the doctrinal understanding of Church members and to awaken within them a greater desire to know the things of God. It will inspire and motivate individuals, priesthood quorums, and Relief Society classes to inquire, read, search, and then go to their Father in Heaven for a witness of the truth of these teachings. Each chapter contains two sections—“Teachings of Brigham Young” and “Suggestions for Study.” The first section consists of extracts from Brigham Young’s sermons to the early Saints. Each statement has been referenced, and the original spelling and punctuation have been preserved; however, the sources cited will not be readily available to most members. These original sources are not necessary to have in order to effectively study or teach from this book. Members need not purchase additional references and commentaries to study or teach these chapters. The text provided in this book, accompanied by the scriptures, is sufficient for instruction. Members should prayerfully read and study President Young’s teachings in order to gain new insights into gospel principles and discover how those principles apply to their everyday lives. By faithfully and prayerfully studying these selections, Latter-day Saints will have a greater understanding of gospel principles and will more fully appreciate the profound and inspired teachings of this great prophet. The second section of each chapter offers a series of questions that will encourage thoughtful contemplation, personal application, and discussion of President Young’s teachings. Members should refer to and carefully reread his words on the principle being discussed. Deep and prayerful study of these teachings will inspire members to greater personal commitment and will help them resolve to follow the teachings of the Savior, Jesus Christ. If individuals and families prayerfully follow the principles in this book, they will be blessed and inspired to greater dedication and spirituality, as were the early Saints who heard these words directly from the lips of the “Lion of the Lord” (HC, 7:434)—the prophet, seer, and revelator, President Brigham Young.
