Book excerpt: The sun had dropped behind the Grimaldi plateau, although for a day twilight would linger over the Oceanus Procellarum. The sky was a hazy blue, and out over the deeper tinted waves the full Earth swung. All the long half-month it had hung there above the horizon, its light dimmed by the sunshine, growing from a thin crescent to its full disk three times as broad as that of the sun at setting. Now in the dusk it was a great silver lamp hanging over Nardos, the Beautiful, the City Built on the Water. The light glimmered over Pg 296] the tall white towers, over the white ten-mile-long adamantine bridge running from Nardos to the shore, and lit up the beach where we were standing, with a brightness that seemed almost that of day.

Book excerpt: Raiders Meet Grim Starlight Justice in the interstellar void. Note: short storyexcerpt"Blazing Novas!"" exclaimed Lt. Hermer, looking down into the funnel-shaped declivity."They're hatching. It must be an incubator here on Vaporia."High overhead shone the pinkish-hued Rigel, tiny as a child's marble, yet so intensely luminous as to give scarcely less light than the solar sun on Earth, even through the diffusing atmosphere of Vaporia, a cold husk of a former star, which just now was acting as Lieutenant Hermer's prison. He had been marooned here a few hours before by two of his erstwhile prisoners, the Mason brothers, whose elusive trail of savagery and crime had led across space from planet to planet. Now he was startled at what was taking place in the funnel shaped cleft.Lemon-yellow bodies writhed from torn yard-long cocoons; tiny yellow arms, legs and antennae developed as the sun dried agglutinous declivity.Since hatching the figures had expanded incredibly. "What a childhood!" murmured Lieutenant Hermer, noting the shafts of sea-weed consistency that composed the outer walls of the incubator, while it was obviously covered by a transparent conical roof that sheltered the fledgling bodies. "What kind of creatures are there on Vaporia! Ouch!"

Download or read book The Legend of Rigel written by Christine Jamesson and published by . This book was released on 2005-12 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: THE LEGEND AND MYSTERY OF RIGEL On a frigid night in 1912 the great unsinkable Titanic sank 2 miles down to a watery grave. Many stories of heroes and villains have been passed down since that fateful night. Yet there is one hero in particular whose story has remained a mystery. Meet Rigel- the Titanic's Newfoundland dog mascot. His incredible story of courage and survival was originally published as an alleged factual account in 1912 just days after the sinking. Come along and enjoy this fictionalized story of Rigel's tragedy and triumph in spite of challenges no human could have survived! * * * Yes Virginia, there may have been a Rigel. The story of Rigel was first reported in the "New York Herald" the day the Carpathia docked with Titanic's survivors. It also appeared in a well-known book: " The Sinking of Titanic and Great Sea Disasters" which was first published in 1912 a few short months after the disaster. After that there was no mention of him at all, no disclaimers, no retractions, nothing to my knowledge. Although there has been some recent mention of him in dog books all subsequent books and movies about Titanic by historians, crew and survivors don't mention him either. Why? Was he a figment of the reporter's imagination? That seems unlikely. If Rigel and new owner didn't exist then who was interviewed? Someone playing a cruel joke while wearing a uniform and holding onto a 150-pound dog? Unlikely again, but I suppose that could have happened. The only two well-known dogs that survived the sinking were toy breeds lovingly smuggled on board the lifeboats in their owner's coats. All of the other dogs on board lost their lives including a champion English Bulldog who was last seen trying to swim in the frigid water. Comparing a bulldog's swimming ability to a Newfoundland's is like expecting your Shetland Pony to win the Kentucky Derby. Bulldogs are among the worst swimmers in dog-dom and Newfoundlands are the absolute best. Many people are skeptical as to whether any creature could have survived a long distance swim in freezing water. Certainly none of the people did. "Newfie" owners and breeders have no problem believing a Newfoundland could do exactly what the record states. Bred to withstand the harsh conditions of the frigid north Atlantic they have been used to haul in heavy fishing nets and assist in water rescues. Newfoundlands could be called the "Polar bears" of the dog world. They have the same adaptations for swimming albeit on a smaller scale. And since Scientists have seen Polar Bears swimming 100 miles out to sea in freezing water and not looking the least bit exhausted, then why not? The near lifeboat collision was also never mentioned again. Perhaps it was dropped purposely. No one wanted to detract from the heroics of the Carpathia and crew. After pushing their small steamer full speed into the very same icefield that doomed Titanic, they deserved all the credit and praise that was bestowed on them. Finally there is the Jonas Briggs mystery. He isn't listed on either ship's crew list for that year. For many that is proof positive this was nothing more than a hoax. Apparently these people have never done genealogy research. Our ancestors were not sticklers for detail. Sometimes they'd spell names phonetically. Other times they'd scribble a name and then not be able to decipher it. I found one of my ancestor's names spelled 4 different ways. One spelling was way off. I changed Jonas to John in my book, a common name that could have been mistaken for Jonas. Taking into account the pandemonium surrounding the Carpathia's arrival there would certainly be some examples of miscommunication.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Complementing Science-Fiction: The Early Years, which surveys science-fiction published in book form from its beginnings through 1930, the present volume covers all the science-fiction printed in the genre magazines--Amazing, Astounding, and Wonder, along with offshoots and minor magazines--from 1926 through 1936. This is the first time this historically important literary phenomenon, which stands behind the enormous modern development of science-fiction, has been studied thoroughly and accurately. The heart of the book is a series of descriptions of all 1,835 stories published during this period, plus bibliographic information. Supplementing this are many useful features: detailed histories of each of the magazines, an issue by issue roster of contents, a technical analysis of the art work, brief authors' biographies, poetry and letter indexes, a theme and motif index of approximately 30,0000 entries, and general indexes. Science-Fiction: The Gernsback Years is not only indispensable for reference librarians, collectors, readers, and scholars interested in science-fiction, it is also of importance to the study of popular culture during the Great Depression in the United States. Most of its data, which are largely based on rare and almost unobtainable sources, are not available elsewhere.

The universe is a dangerous place, a fact violently brought home to Frank Compton for perhaps the thousandth time when a stranger delivering a message dies right in front of him. An operative for Western Alliance Intelligence until his whistle-blowing activities got him fired, Compton is now being sought out by the Spiders, the robotic alien beings responsible for the upkeep and operation of the Quadrail transportation system, which connects the galaxy’s twelve inhabited empires. The discovery of a sinister plot to use the Quadrail for ill has brought the Spiders to Compton—for only someone possessing the former agent’s unique skills can stop the scheme for good. But when Compton leaves Earth behind—joining forces with Bayta, the Spiders’ beautiful, half-human representative aboard the Quadrail—the terrifying scope of a vast, galaxy-wide conspiracy begins to reveal itself. Targeted on all sides by alien assassins of every shape and species, Compton and his enigmatic new partner are suddenly in a race against a clock ticking down to an irreversible doomsday, one in which the galactic night train will derail, carrying all members of humanity screaming to their deaths. The first in the Quadrail series from the Hugo Award–winning author of Blackcollar and many New York Times–bestselling Star Wars novels, Night Train to Rigel is an action-packed “great read” (Booklist).

Book excerpt: From H.G. Wells to Isaac Asimov to Ursula K. Le Guin, time travel has long been a favorite topic and plot device in tales of science fiction and fantasy. But as any true SF fan knows, astounding stories about traversing alternate universes and swimming the tides of time demand plausible science. That’s just what Paul J. Nahin’s guide provides. An engineer, physicist, and published science fiction writer, Nahin is uniquely qualified to explain the ins and outs of how to spin such complex theories as worm holes, singularity, and relativity into scientifically sound fiction. First published in 1997, this fast-paced book discusses the common and not-so-common time-travel devices science fiction writers have used over the years, assesses which would theoretically work and which would not, and provides scientific insight inventive authors can use to find their own way forward or backward in time. From hyperspace and faster-than-light travel to causal loops and the uncertainty principle and beyond, Nahin’s equation-free romp across time will help writers send their characters to the past or future in an entertaining, logical, and scientific way. If you ever wanted to set up the latest and greatest grandfather paradox—or just wanted to know if the time-bending events in the latest pulp you read could ever happen—then this book is for you.

Book excerpt: When detective Francis Dimaio, supervisor of the Pinkerton detective agency's Philadelphia bureau, read the telegram from Allan Pinkerton, ordering him to leave immediately for New York, he knew he would have to put off the vacation with his wife. What he couldn't have known was that he was about to open an investigation into the deaths of more than 1500 people. A few days earlier, former president Theodore Roosevelt had arrived unexpectedly at Pinkerton's Broadway office. In his possession was a letter from his former aide and adviser, Major Archibald Butt. Butt, now the aide-de-camp for President Taft, had been returning to the United States on the Titanic after a round of diplomacy with the King of Italy, when he went down with the ship. In the letter, dated the day of the sailing, Butt wrote that a representative of the Italian Prime Minister approached him with knowledge of a stratagem to incite the world to the brink of war. Most alarming, the plot would involve the sinking of a passenger liner. The source of the tip further confided Titanic would be the logical target. Determined to uncover the facts behind the portentous warning, Roosevelt persuades Pinkerton to take on the case. Dimaio, a tenacious investigator whose resume includes tracking Butch Cassidy and the Sundance kid, accepts the assignment and quickly uncovers an elaborate insurance fraud involving Titanic and her sister ship Olympic. Working every angle, Dimaio discovers the fraud was double-edged, and as evidence begins to emerge that the plot is still in play, he and Pinkerton find themselves in a race against time with an ambitious financier, a ruthless agent from British Intelligence, and the cabal of powerful men working behind the scenes, hell-bent on seeing to completion their diabolical plans.
