Book Work and Faith in the Kentucky Coal Fields

Download or read book Work and Faith in the Kentucky Coal Fields written by Richard J. Callahan and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2008-11-20 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Exploring themes of work and labor in everyday life, Richard J. Callahan, Jr., offers a history of how coal miners and their families lived their religion in eastern Kentucky's coal fields during the early 20th century. Callahan follows coal miners and their families from subsistence farming to industrial coal mining as they draw upon religious idioms to negotiate changing patterns of life and work. He traces innovation and continuity in religious expression that emerged from the specific experiences of coal mining, including the spaces and social structures of coal towns, the working bodies of miners, the anxieties of their families, and the struggle toward organized labor. Building on oral histories, folklore, folksongs, and vernacular forms of spirituality, this rich and engaging narrative recovers a social history of ordinary working people through religion.

Book excerpt: One doctor's courageous fight to save a small town from a silent epidemic that threatened the community's future--and exposed a national health crisis. When Dr. Will Cooke, an idealistic young physician just out of medical training, set up practice in the small rural community of Austin, Indiana, he had no idea that much of the town was being torn apart by poverty, addiction, and life-threatening illnesses. But he soon found himself at the crossroads of two unprecedented health-care disasters: a national opioid epidemic and the worst drug-fueled HIV outbreak ever seen in rural America. Confronted with Austin's hidden secrets, Dr. Cooke decided he had to do something about them. In taking up the fight for Austin's people, however, he would have to battle some unanticipated foes: prejudice, political resistance, an entrenched bureaucracy--and the dark despair that threatened to overwhelm his own soul. Canary in the Coal Mine is a gripping account of the transformation of a man and his adopted community, a compelling and ultimately hopeful read in the vein of Hillbilly Elegy, Dreamland, and Educated.

Book The Jasonville I Remember

Download or read book The Jasonville I Remember written by George R. Stultz and published by . This book was released on 2014-02 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 1930s were a difficult time in the United States. Directly following the stock market crash of 1929, which plunged our nation into economic downfall, the thirties are best known for the Great Depression. Nearly 15 million Americans were unemployed, and families all over the country were struggling-including the Stultz family in Jasonville, Indiana. But the Stultzes were no strangers to adversity and hard work, and life in this little coalmining town was not all hardship and grief. In The Jasonville I Remember-a collection of essays first published in the Jasonville Independent-George Stultz reflects on various topics concerning family, community, and growing up in rural Indiana. He takes us back to a time when life was challenging but filled with moments of pure joy. And these are the moments that he shares in this delightful and nostalgic look at life in the 1930s as seen through the eyes of an adventurous, fun-loving, and goodhearted boy. Whether you lived through the Great Depression or simply read about it in history books, you'll find these vignettes relatable to modern life as we celebrate family, friends, and the memories of our childhood that sustain us through our lives. George R. Stultz was born and reared in Jasonville, Indiana. After serving in the U.S. Army from 1943 to 1946, serving his country in the Pacific Theater of World War II, he returned to Indiana. He graduated from Indiana State University with a Bachelor of Arts degree, and moved to Adams County, where he began a teaching career. After several years he changed direction and began an extensive and varied career in the juvenile/criminal justice field, with a master's degree in criminology. He retired in 1989 and has spent his post-retirement years reading, writing, gardening, and working with the Quaker Meeting assembly in Plainfield, Indiana.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Coal in Our Veins, Erin Thomas employs historical research, autobiography, and journalism to intertwine the history of coal, her ancestors' lives mining coal, and the societal and environmental impacts of the United States' dependency on coal as an energy source. In the first part of her book, she visits Wales, native ground of British coal mining and of her emigrant ancestors. The Thomases' move to the coal region of Utah—where they witnessed the Winter Quarters and Castle Gate mine explosions, two of the worst mining disasters in American history—and the history of coal development in Utah form the second part. Then Thomas investigates coal mining and communities in West Virginia, near her East Coast home, looking at the Sago Mine collapse and more widespread impacts of mining, including population displacement, mountain top removal, coal dust dispersal, and stream pollution, flooding, and decimation. The book's final part moves from Washington D.C.—and an examination of coal, CO2, and national energy policy—back to Utah, for a tour of a coal mine, and a consideration of the Crandall Canyon mine cave-in, back to Wales and the closing of the oldest operating deep mine in the world and then to a look at energy alternatives, especially wind power, in West Virginia and Pennsylvania.
