Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Our Analytical Chemistry and Its Future In an address read at Philadelphia nearly twelve years ago, I gave expression to some thoughts on the condition of analytical chemistry in our country as the condition appeared to me then to be. Those thoughts were based on an experience of many years, during which I was engaged wholly in analytical work of a more than ordinarily exacting nature, and especially upon observations that had been acquired in connection with several series of cooperative analyses of diverse materials. Since then my attention has been no less given to analysis, largely for the past eight years in a supervisory capacity, however, and I have had opportunity to note the conditions that now prevail with respect to chemical analysis and what an important bearing exact analytical work often has on problems of physical and electrochemistry, metallurgy, etc. It seems to me then that I can choose no more fitting subject for my present discourse than a continuation of one so closely related to my life-work, one in which I feel a deep interest and of which I may be presumed to have knowledge somewhat worth presenting on an occasion like this. Book A Short Manual of Analytical Chemistry

Download or read book A Short Manual of Analytical Chemistry written by John Muter and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-01 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Short Manual of Analytical Chemistry: Qualitative and Try, and Organic In this edition it has been the effort of the reviser to let the original text remain as little altered as circumstances would admit. Changes have been made only so far as the United States Pharmacopoeia made it compulsory to do so, excepting the chapter on urine analysis, which has been enlarged and illustrated and cuts of microscopic urinary sediments added. The name of each chemical formula has been introduced where the formula occurs for the first time. This is done for the convenience of students of medical and pharmaceutical colleges, as well as for those who continue the application of analytical chemistry in their professional life. The processes for detection of certain acid radicals in presence of others are classified together, to be more applicable in searching for adulterations, as well as to save the student confusion by bringing the tests for radicals more closely together. A brief outline will be found on p. 61 which will aid the student materially in finding the pages required for the full analysis of a simple salt, and another, facing p. 64, for the analysis of mixed salts. A short list of tests for certain organic compounds has been added on p. 88. The chapter on water analysis has been altered to correspond with Wanklyn's methods, as those are most generally used in America. Several other processes have been added, such as estimation of fat in milk, quantitative estimation of various ingredients of urine, estimation of chloral hydrate, etc. In conclusion, the reviser trusts that the changes made will find favor among the teachers and members of the profession in America, and that the present edition will find as many friends as former ones have found in the past. Book Elementary Practical Chemistry and Qualitative Analysis Classic Reprint

Download or read book Elementary Practical Chemistry and Qualitative Analysis Classic Reprint written by Frank Clowes and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-16 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elementary Practical Chemistry and Qualitative Analysis The text-book on Qualitative Analysis, written by one of us, has proved by its success that it meets the requirements of large numbers of teachers and students. It furnishes a fairly complete course of work for a student who intends to make a study of Qualitative Analysis. We have long felt, however, that a smaller treatise would be useful to students of elementary practical chemistry and chemical analysis, who have the opportunity of working in a suitably equipped laboratory and under the direction of a teacher. The course of instruction in this book is adapted to those students who do not need so thorough a chemical training as that which must be undertaken by the future professional and analytical chemist. This smaller book is therefore intended for the general students and the technical students of our schools and colleges. Book Treatise on Applied Analytical Chemistry Vol 1

Download or read book Treatise on Applied Analytical Chemistry Vol 1 written by Professor Vittorio Villavecchia and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-30 with total page 502 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Treatise on Applied Analytical Chemistry, Vol. 1: Methods and Standards, for the Chemical Analysis of the Principal, Industrial and Food Products Chemical analysis applied to the examination of industrial and alimentary products plays an important part in the purchase of raw materials, in the control of manufacturing processes, and in the determination of the value, impurities and adulterations of the finished products. It constitutes, indeed, a branch of chemistry worthy of assiduous cultivation by the technical chemist who wishes to obtain a rational knowledge of his prime materials and finished products, by the hygienic chemist desirous of detecting any additions to or changes in food substances, by the commercial chemist for the exact characterization and evaluation of commercial products, and, in general, by experts and inspectors appointed to exact contractual conditions in connexion with the purchases and supplies of the State. The methods followed in these industrial and commercial analyses are applications of general, analytical and physical chemistry to special cases; in some instances they are less rigorous than, and do not attain the precision of, scientific methods, whereas in others the accuracy is that of the most exact scientific investigations. The choice of the method to be used is of considerable importance in practice, which demands processes giving the greatest exactitude compatible with the end in view at the lowest possible expenditure of time and trouble. In most cases numerous methods are given in the literature for the examination of any particular material, and doubt is often felt as to which of these methods it is preferable to employ, the more so since the differences frequently lie in details and are not of great import. Thus, without preliminary trial, the analyst, especially in a new field, cannot always decide easily which procedure will answer his purpose. It may, further, be pointed out that, with certain products, the methods of analysis at present available yield results which are not absolute but relative only to the procedure employed. In such cases it is most important that different workers use one and the same method - although perhaps not a very accurate one - in order that the results obtained may exhibit the necessary concordance. Then, too, certain States have felt the necessity of issuing official standards to be attained in the analysis of various commodities of general interest, while in commercial and industrial circles the custom is growing of fixing beforehand the analytical methods serving as basis for the evaluation of the products to be dealt in. All this shows how useful it is for the analyst to have at his command a collection of such methods and standards for industrial and commercial analyses as, having been either officially prescribed or repeatedly tested, may be confidently adopted. Book Theoretical Principles of the Methods of Analytical Chemistry Based Upon Chemical Reactions Classic Reprint

This book was released on 2017-09-16 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Theoretical Principles of the Methods of Analytical Chemistry Based Upon Chemical Reactions The Object which analytical chemistry is to pursue, then, is not only to increase the number Of methods by extending the list Of insoluble precipitates, but also, and especially, to increase the exact ness Of the methods already known, by investigating in the light of the recent physico-chemical theories the conditions which render the reactions as complete as possible. The moment seems to have arrived for analytical chemistry to enter this path under the stimulus Of industrial demands which are endeavoring more and more to vary the qualities Of the ordinary metals by the introduction Of accurately proportioned infinitesimal quantities Of foreign elements. The bond which unites analytical chemistry to general chemistry thus finds itself strengthened. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
