Book Messianism Zionism and Jewish Religious Radicalism

Download or read book Messianism Zionism and Jewish Religious Radicalism written by Aviezer Ravitzky and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 1996-09 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Orthodox Jewish tradition affirms that Jewish exile will end with the coming of the Messiah. How, then, does Orthodoxy respond to the political realization of a Jewish homeland that is the State of Israel? In this cogent and searching study, Aviezer Ravitzky probes Orthodoxy's divergent positions on Zionism, which range from radical condemnation to virtual beatification. Ravitzky traces the roots of Haredi ideology, which opposes the Zionist enterprise, and shows how Haredim living in Israel have come to terms with a state to them unholy and therefore doomed. Ravitzky also examines radical religious movements, including the Gush Emunim, to whom the State of Israel is a divine agent. He concludes with a discussion of the recent transformation of Habad Hassidism from conservatism to radical messianism. This book is indispensable to anyone concerned with the complex confrontation between Jewish fundamentalism and Israeli political sovereignty, especially in light of the tragic death of Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin.

Book Mystery of Black Fire White Fire

Download or read book Mystery of Black Fire White Fire written by Bruce Friedman and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2016-05-17 with total page 343 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Faith forms the foundation of both science and religion. In Mystery of Black Fire, White Fire, author Bruce Friedman uses this thought as a springboard for a discussion of the commonalities existing between these two realms, particularly with regard to cosmology and the origins of the universe. Mystery of Black Fire, White Fire provides a contemplation of the Creation and begins by offering an understanding of the basic principles of both Judaism and science. The mysticism of kabbalah with its inclusion of creation from nothing among its other features is found to grapple with issues that science could only start to properly address in the twentieth century. Combining the tools and knowledge of science with those of Judaism, Friedman shows that new avenues of thought and revelation can be found. But he also communicates that with all of the resources of science and religion available to humanity, the resolution of the basic mystery of creation, with which kabbalah concerns itself, remains elusive. Praise for Mystery of Black Fire, White Fire What has Athens to do with Jerusalem? a writer of antiquity famously asked. Or as we might put it today, what has modern science to do with the Torah? This fascinating and erudite book, combining great scientific and theological sophistication, gives us the answer. Stephen M. Barr, physics professor at the University of Delaware and author of Modern Physics and Ancient Faith

Book excerpt: This book presents an introduction to the main concepts of statistical physics, followed by applications to specific problems and more advanced concepts, selected for their pedagogical or practical interest. Particular attention has been devoted to the presentation of the fundamental aspects, including the foundations of statistical physics, as well as to the discussion of important physical examples. Comparison of theoretical results with the relevant experimental data (with illustrative curves) is present through the entire textbook. This aspect is facilitated by the broad range of phenomena pertaining to statistical physics, providing example issues from domains as varied as the physics of classical and quantum liquids, condensed matter, liquid crystals, magnetic systems, astrophysics, atomic and molecular physics, superconductivity and many more. This textbook is intended for graduate students (MSc and PhD) and for those teaching introductory or advanced courses on statistical physics. Key Features: A rigorous and educational approach of statistical physics illustrated with concrete examples. A clear presentation of fundamental aspects of statistical physics. Many exercises with detailed solutions. Nicolas Sator is Associate Professor at Sorbonne University, Paris, France. He is a member of the Laboratory of Theoretical Physics of Condensed Matter (LPTMC) and his research focuses on the physics of liquids. Nicolas Pavloff is Professor at Paris-Saclay University, France. He is a member of Laboratoire de Physique Théorique et Modèles Statistiques (LPTMS) and his domain of research is quantum fluid theory. The first part provides a comprehensive picture of Ibn Ezra’s scientific corpus. The second part studies his linguistic strategy. The third and fourth parts study Ibn Ezra’s introductions to his scientific treatises and the fifth part is devoted to studying four ‘encounters’ with Claudius Ptolemy, the main scientific character featuring in Ibn Ezra’s literary work.
