The Dudley family lives in New York where they get victimized by a trusted employee who embezzles their money and leave them in huge debt. They are forced to move to Philadelphia where they endure the loss of their mother, a yellow fever epidemic, rigors of winter and the exactions of landlords. Constantia, the daughter of the family, manages to keep the family afloat by her efforts and determination. Her luck changes when she meets Ormond, a wealthy military projector and conscientious atheist, who falls in love with her. Ormond helps the Dudley family to rise from poverty and makes numerous efforts to win Constantia's heart. The Secret Witness thematically focuses on the ways in which individuals change in reaction to their social environments. The novel thoroughly explores the republicanism and republican values common to the early American nation.

Download or read book Ormond or the Secret Witness written by Charles Brockden Brown and published by Hackett Publishing. This book was released on 2009-09-15 with total page 470 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As it tells the story of Constantia Dudley, from her family's financial collapse to her encounters with a series of cosmopolitan revolutionaries and reactionaries, Charles Brockden Brown's Ormond; or The Secret Witness (1799) develops a sustained meditation on late-Enlightenment debates concerning political liberty, women's rights, conventions of sex-gender, and their relation to the reshaping of an Atlantic world in the throes of transformation. This edition of Ormond includes Brown's Alcuin (1798), an important dialogue on women's rights and marriage, as well as his key essays on history and literature, along with selections from contemporary writings on women's education and revolution debates that figure in the novel's background and in the charged atmosphere of the late 1790s.

Book excerpt: "Private Property explores Charles Brockden Brown's novels Wieland, Ormond, Arthur Mervyn, and Edgar Huntly; his dialogue on women's rights, Alcuin; and a few less well-known works such as "The Man at Home" series of essays and "Carwin, the Biloquist," with attention to Brown's differentiation of gender in economic matters." "Author Elizabeth Jane Wall Hinds takes on the terms of economic positioning in these works, suggesting that Brown's fictional women look nothing at all like his men within the republicanism that was growing to embrace an emerging capitalism during the American 1780s and 1790s. The new economic realities of this era contained the seeds of a changing definition of virtue, a definition suited to an economically defined and specifically capitalist male citizen operating in an increasingly large public space of activity. At the same time, an emerging "cult of domesticity" came to define the virtue of women within the growing U.S. capitalist economy."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Book The Traumatic Colonel

Download or read book The Traumatic Colonel written by Michael J. Drexler and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 2014-07-11 with total page 235 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In American political fantasy, the Founding Fathers loom large, at once historical and mythical figures. In The Traumatic Colonel, Michael J. Drexler and Ed White examine the Founders as imaginative fictions, characters in the specifically literary sense, whose significance emerged from narrative elements clustered around them. From the revolutionary era through the 1790s, the Founders took shape as a significant cultural system for thinking about politics, race, and sexuality. Yet after 1800, amid the pressures of the Louisiana Purchase and the Haitian Revolution, this system could no longer accommodate the deep anxieties about the United States as a slave nation. Drexler and White assert that the most emblematic of the political tensions of the time is the figure of Aaron Burr, whose rise and fall were detailed in the literature of his time: his electoral tie with Thomas Jefferson in 1800, the accusations of seduction, the notorious duel with Alexander Hamilton, his machinations as the schemer of a breakaway empire, and his spectacular treason trial. The authors venture a psychoanalytically-informed exploration of post-revolutionary America to suggest that the figure of “Burr” was fundamentally a displaced fantasy for addressing the Haitian Revolution. Drexler and White expose how the historical and literary fictions of the nation’s founding served to repress the larger issue of the slave system and uncover the Burr myth as the crux of that repression. Exploring early American novels, such as the works of Charles Brockden Brown and Tabitha Gilman Tenney, as well as the pamphlets, polemics, tracts, and biographies of the early republican period, the authors speculate that this flourishing of political writing illuminates the notorious gap in U.S. literary history between 1800 and 1820.
