Book The Character Types in the Old French Chansons de Geste Classic Reprint

This book was released on 2017-11-24 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Character Types in the Old French Chansons De Geste Ticknor, in speaking of the Poema dd Cid, remarks that we read it for its living pictures of the age it represents and for the vivacity with which it brings up manners and customs so remote from our own experience that when they are attempted in formal history, they come to us as cold as the fables of mythology. These words express admirably the charm exercised by the old French chansons dc geste upon the mind of the student who wanders at will among their treasures. These poems, at first sight so monotonous and so crude, are really the living expression of the society which produced them. They throb with the pulse of the changing political, social, and literary conditions of the twelfth and thirteenth centuries. When we recall the importance of these centuries in the pre-renaissance literature of France, we marvel that so little has been written to make clear the place of the epic poems in the evolution of French litera ture. If the Middle Age is an indispensable link in the chain of literary transmission, surely we should seek in the national epic some reflection of the development of French nationality and literary art. Book excerpt: Alfred Busi lives alone in his villa overlooking the waves. Famed in his tiny Mediterranean town for his music, he is mourning the recent death of his wife and quietly living out his days. Then one night, Busi is viciously attacked by an intruder in his own courtyard—bitten and scratched. He insists his assailant was neither man nor animal. Soon, Busi’s account of what happened is being embellished to fan the flames of old rumor—of an ancient race of people living in the surrounding forest. It is also used to spark new controversy, inspiring claims that something must finally be done about the town’s poor, whose numbers have been growing. In trademark crystalline prose, Jim Crace portrays a man taking stock of his life and looking into an uncertain future, while bearing witness to a community in the throes of great change.

Book Willehalm

    Book Details:
  • Author : Wolfram Eschenbach
  • Publisher : Penguin UK
  • Release : 2013-12-05
  • ISBN : 0141394749
  • Pages : 376 pages

Download or read book Willehalm written by Wolfram Eschenbach and published by Penguin UK. This book was released on 2013-12-05 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wolfram von Eschenbach (fl. c. 1195-1225), best known as the author of Parzival, based Willehalm, his epic poem of military prowess and courtly love, on the style and subject matter of an Old French "chanson de geste." In it he tells of the love of Willehalm for Giburc, a Saracen woman converted to Christianity, and its consequences. Seeking revenge for the insult to their faith, her relatives initiate a religious war but are finally routed. Wolfram's description of the two battles of Alischanz, with their massive slaughter and loss of heroes, and of the exploits of Willehalm and the quasicomic Rennewart, well displays the violence and courtliness of the medieval knightly ideal. Wolfram flavors his brutal account, however, with tender scenes between the lovers, asides to his audience, sympathetic cameos of his characters--especially the women--and, most unusually for his time, a surprising tolerance for 'pagans'.
