Book The German Colonial Empire

Download or read book The German Colonial Empire written by Paolo Giordani and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-06 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The German Colonial Empire: Its Beginning and Ending The terrible war now being enacted in Europe, and especially on the Western front, has necessarily to some extent monopolized the attention of the English public and subordinated the interest in the more distant theatres of war. But it is not unlikely that the breaking-up of the German Colonial Empire will prove to be the vital achievement for the British race and the one fraught with the most far-reaching consequences to the future of the world. When the prospect of peace allows this to be realized it is hoped that this little book may be found useful. Meanwhile it may have some interest to the many who have associations with special portions of our own colonial Empire. Book The Acquisition of Africa 1870 1914

Download or read book The Acquisition of Africa 1870 1914 written by Mieke van der Linden and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2016-10-05 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over recent decades, the responsibility for the past actions of the European colonial powers in relation to their former colonies has been subject to a lively debate. In this book, the question of the responsibility under international law of former colonial States is addressed. Such a legal responsibility would presuppose the violation of the international law that was applicable at the time of colonization. In the ‘Scramble for Africa’ during the Age of New Imperialism (1870-1914), European States and non-State actors mainly used cession and protectorate treaties to acquire territorial sovereignty (imperium) and property rights over land (dominium). The question is raised whether Europeans did or did not on a systematic scale breach these treaties in the context of the acquisition of territory and the expansion of empire, mainly through extending sovereignty rights and, subsequently, intervening in the internal affairs of African political entities.

Book The Origins of Totalitarianism

Download or read book The Origins of Totalitarianism written by Hannah Arendt and published by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt. This book was released on 1973 with total page 580 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "How could such a book speak so powerfully to our present moment? The short answer is that we, too, live in dark times, even if they are different and perhaps less dark, and "Origins" raises a set of fundamental questions about how tyranny can arise and the dangerous forms of inhumanity to which it can lead." Jeffrey C. Isaac, The Washington Post Hannah Arendt's definitive work on totalitarianism and an essential component of any study of twentieth-century political history The Origins of Totalitarianism begins with the rise of anti-Semitism in central and western Europe in the 1800s and continues with an examination of European colonial imperialism from 1884 to the outbreak of World War I. Arendt explores the institutions and operations of totalitarian movements, focusing on the two genuine forms of totalitarian government in our time--Nazi Germany and Stalinist Russia--which she adroitly recognizes were two sides of the same coin, rather than opposing philosophies of Right and Left. From this vantage point, she discusses the evolution of classes into masses, the role of propaganda in dealing with the nontotalitarian world, the use of terror, and the nature of isolation and loneliness as preconditions for total domination.
