Book Metasomatism and the Chemical Transformation of Rock

Download or read book Metasomatism and the Chemical Transformation of Rock written by Daniel Harlov and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-08-14 with total page 804 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fluid-aided mass transfer and subsequent mineral re-equilibration are the two defining features of metasomatism and must be present in order for metamorphism to occur. Coupled with igneous and tectonic processes, metasomatism has played a major role in the formation of the Earth’s continental and oceanic crust and lithospheric mantle as well as in their evolution and subsequent stabilization. Metasomatic processes can include ore mineralization, metasomatically induced alteration of oceanic lithosphere, mass transport in and alteration of subducted oceanic crust and overlying mantle wedge, which has subsequent implications regarding mass transport, fluid flow, and volatile storage in the lithospheric mantle overall, as well as both regional and localized crustal metamorphism. Metasomatic alteration of accessory minerals such as zircon or monazite can allow for the dating of metasomatic events as well as give additional information regarding the chemistry of the fluids responsible. Lastly present day movement of fluids in both the lithospheric mantle and deep to mid crust can be observed utilizing geophysical resources such as electrical resistivity and seismic data. Such observations help to further clarify the picture of actual metasomatic processes as inferred from basic petrographic, mineralogical, and geochemical data. The goal of this volume is to bring together a diverse group of geologists, each of whose specialities and long range experience regarding one or more aspects of metasomatism during geologic processes, should allow them to contribute to a series of review chapters, which outline the basis of our current understanding of how metasomatism influences and helps to control both the evolution and stability of the crust and lithospheric mantle.

Book Metasomatic Textures in Granites

Download or read book Metasomatic Textures in Granites written by Jiashu Rong and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-05-30 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on hundreds of thin sections from granite in China, this book introduces metasomatic textures and their formation mechanism in granite. It also proposes that metasomatic textures can basically be classified into two patterns: hetero-oriented replacement and co-oriented replacement, according to the consistency of orientations of replacive and replaced minerals. The hetero-oriented albitization of K-feldspar is quite distinct from the co-oriented albitization of K-feldspar. They occur separately without transition, although both are generally referred to as albitization of K-feldspar.This unique granite atlas uses a series of color microphotos taken with a quartz plate under crossed polars to clearly illustrate metasomatic mechanisms and superimposed metasomatic processes. The origins of clear albite rim, intergranular swapped albite, K-feldspathization, quartzification, muscovitization, beryllization, myrmekite, small platy albite, perthitic albite, K-feldspar megacryst etc. are comprehensively discussed and explained. The book will appeal to teachers, researchers and students involved in igneous and metamorphic petrology.

Book excerpt: This is a discount Black and white version. Some images may be unclear, please see BCCampus website for the digital version. This book was born out of a 2014 meeting of earth science educators representing most of the universities and colleges in British Columbia, and nurtured by a widely shared frustration that many students are not thriving in courses because textbooks have become too expensive for them to buy. But the real inspiration comes from a fascination for the spectacular geology of western Canada and the many decades that the author spent exploring this region along with colleagues, students, family, and friends. My goal has been to provide an accessible and comprehensive guide to the important topics of geology, richly illustrated with examples from western Canada. Although this text is intended to complement a typical first-year course in physical geology, its contents could be applied to numerous other related courses.

Book The Field Description of Metamorphic Rocks

Download or read book The Field Description of Metamorphic Rocks written by Norman Fry and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2013-05-03 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Geological Society of London Handbook Series Edited by KeithCox Founded in 1807, the Geological Society of London has beenpublishing since 1845 and now distributes its journal to Fellowsthroughout the world. This Handbook is published as part ofa series of authoritative practical guides to field geology. The Field Description of Metamorphic Rocks "This handbook describes how metamorphic rocks and rock masses maybe observed, recorded and mapped in the field. Written at a levelsuitable for undergraduate students of geology, this book (as withits companion volumes in the series) has firmly established itselfas an essential tool for any geologist -- student, professional oramateur -- faced with the task of making a general description ofan area of metamorphic rocks. A clear, systematic frameworktogether with numerous diagrams, illustrations and checklistsenables readers to produce useful and broadly similar descriptions, despite possible differences of background or specialist interest. This well-written and well-produced little text will, I am certain, become standard reading for most geology undergraduates. It willalso interest many geologists who do not regularly work inmetamorphic terrains and will be particularly useful to engineeringgeologists and civil engineers who are often concerned withdescribing the fabrics of metamorphic rocks without being concernedabout their origins." --M.E. Jones, Mineralogical Magazine Contents: * Metamorphic Fieldwork and Mapping * Names and Categories of Metamorphic Rocks and Rock Units * Rock Banding * Minerals * Compositions * Grade * Textures * Fabric Types * Relations to Structures * Undeformed Pods * Augen * Pseudomorphs * Veins * Igneous Contacts * Metasomatism * Reaction Zones * Fault-Zones and Mylonites * Reference Tables and Checklists
