Book excerpt: Excerpt from Oriental Life: An Account of Past and Contemporary Conditions and Progress in Asia, Excepting China, India and Japan While China, Japan, and India are occupying more of the attention of the world than any other of the Asiatic countries, a study of that vast continent would be incomplete without some knowledge of those borderlands we have come to designate as the Near East. Besides, this knowledge is necessary to those who desire to keep abreast of the forward march of the nations. It is no longer sufficient that we become acquainted with Our Own Country and its advancement, for universal brotherhood is making its demands upon us, and America is playing no small part in the modernization of the East. The old familiar cry that has rung down the centuries, Come over into Macedonia and help us, is wafted across the seas to-day. It behooves every Christian nation to foster and aid this universal desire for the "federation of the world." Once the patriotic ideal was all-sufficient; now the farther we remove ourselves from the ideal of patriotism to merge ourselves into that higher ideal of universal peace and freedom, the better it will be for us as individuals, the better will it be for us a nation. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A wide-ranging introduction to the multi-faceted history of Asia—from early origins to the present Asia Past and Present is an expansive survey of the social, political, and economic history of the continent from the Paleolithic era to the early 21st century. As there is no physically discrete continent, rather an arbitrary division of the Eurasian landmass, this book focuses on terrain that encompasses India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Central Asia, China, Korea, Japan, Mongolia, the Russian Far East, and Southeast Asia—the area which most modern scholars identify as Asia. Offering broad chronological and topical coverage of Asia, this book examines subjects including written languages, religions and philosophies, concepts of monarchy, militarism, independence and nation building, and more. Particular focus is placed on the varying levels of influence the core cultures of India and China have had on the continent in a multitude of socio-political areas. Historical dialogues of how colonies, later emerging nations, blended traditional Asian culture and Western political and economic models of modernization complement contemporary discussions of globalization, nuclear tensions, and growing demands for greater individual freedom. Written in an engaging, accessible style, this book: Covers of a wide range of topics, perspectives, geographic regions, and time periods Highlights India and China as the pre 19th century cultural cores of Asia Presents a relatable political-cultural narrative framework Discusses contemporary themes including gender, sexual orientation, the environment, and Western and Islamic influence on Asian culture Includes coverage of commonly underrepresented regions such as the Himalayan nations, Maldives, and New Guinea Asia Past and Present: A Brief History is a valuable resource for undergraduate courses where Asian cultures are introduced, and in courses on Asian politics, diplomacy, environmental issues, and socio-economics.

Book The International Order of Asia in the 1930s and 1950s

Download or read book The International Order of Asia in the 1930s and 1950s written by Dr Nicholas J White and published by Ashgate Publishing, Ltd.. This book was released on 2013-06-28 with total page 489 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book reconsiders the nature and formation of Asia's economic order during the 1930s and 1950s in light of the new historiographical developments in Britain and Japan. Recently several Japanese economic historians have offered a new perspective on Asian history, arguing that economic growth was fuelled by the phenomenon of intra-Asian trade which began to grow rapidly around the turn of the 19th-20th centuries. On the other side, British imperial historians, P.J. Cain and A.G. Hopkins, have presented their own interpretation of 'gentlemanly capitalism', in which they emphasize the leading role of the service sector rather than that of British industry in assessing the nature of the British presence overseas. In order to assess and test these new perspectives, this volume addresses three key issues. The first is to reconsider the metropolitan-peripheral relationship in Asia, focusing particularly on the role of the sterling area and its implications for Asian economic development. The second is to examine the formation of inter-regional trade relations within Asia in the 1930s and their revival and transformation in the 1950s. The final issue is the comparison of the international order of Asia of the 1930s with the 1950s, and the degree to which the Second World War represented a break-point in Asia's economic development. Dealing with issues of trade, economy, nationalism and imperialism, this book provides fresh insights into the development of Asia during the mid-twentieth century. Drawing on the latest scholarship it will prove invaluable to all who wish to better understand the position of countries such as Japan, China, India, Singapore, Malaysia and Korea within the wider international order.

Book History of Asia

Download or read book History of Asia written by B.V. Rao and published by Sterling Publishers Pvt. Ltd. This book was released on with total page 517 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The importance of the study of the history of Asia needs no special emphasis, particularly with the emergence of Japan, China and India as major powers of this continent. The present book; History of Asia, is different from other books of this genre, as it connects the ancient and medieval with the modern. It deals with the account of each country in its geographical setting, highlighting those incidents in neighbouring countries which have had some impact upon it. The ancient and medieval periods cover topics like migration, early settlements, formation of kingdoms and empires, socio-economic matters, Islamic penetrations and the advent of Western powers. The modern period is treated in great detail, especially matters like colonisation, impact of Western civilization, the rise of nationalism and the gaining of independence following the Second World War. Current history, which includes aspects like subversion of democracies, the ushering in of military rule, ethnic conflicts, movements for the restoration of democracy, oppression of minorities, economic issues and the possibility of nuclear war — right up to the end of the millennium — has been dealt with in a fascinating way, with maps and a bibliography to stimulate the reader’s interest.

Download or read book Sovereignty and Authenticity written by Prasenjit Duara and published by Rowman & Littlefield Publishers. This book was released on 2004-09-01 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this powerful and provocative book, Prasenjit Duara uses the case of Manchukuo, the Japanese puppet state in northeast China from 1932-1945, to explore how such antinomies as imperialism and nationalism, modernity and tradition, and governmentality and exploitation interacted in the post-World War I period. His study of Manchukuo, which had a population of 40 million and was three times the area of Japan, catalyzes a broader understanding of new global trends that characterized much of the twentieth century. Asking why Manchukuo so desperately sought to appear sovereign, Duara examines the cultural and political resources it mobilized to make claims of sovereignty. He argues that Manchukuo, as a transparently constructed 'nation-state,' offers a unique historical laboratory for examining the utilization and transformation of circulating global forces mediated by the 'East Asian modern.' Sovereignty and AUthenticity not only shows how Manchukuo drew technologies of modern nationbuilding from China and Japan, but it provides a window into how some of these techniques and processes were obscured or naturalized in the more successful East Asian nation-states. With its sweepingly original theoretical and comparative perspectives on nationalism and imperialism, this book will be essential reading for all those interested in contemporary history.
