Book On the Construction of Engineering Handbooks

Download or read book On the Construction of Engineering Handbooks written by Stefan Gruner and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-04-13 with total page 89 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on the clarification of what actually a handbook is, the systematic identification of what ought to be considered as “settled knowledge” (extracted from historic repositories) for inclusion into such a handbook, and the “assembly” of such identified knowledge into a form which is fit for the purpose and conforms to the formal characteristics of handbooks as a “literary genre”. For many newly emerging domains or disciplines, for which no handbook with normative authority has yet been defined, the question arises of how to do this systematically and in a non-arbitrary manner. This book is the first to reflect upon the question of how to construct a desktop handbook. It is demonstrated how concept analysis can be used for identifying settled knowledge as the key ingredient by utilizing the assembled data for classification; a presentation scheme for handbook articles is developed and demonstrated to be suitable. The sketched approach is then illustrated by an example from the railway safety domain. Finally, the limitations of the presented methods are discussed. The key contribution of this book is the (example illustrated) construction method itself, not the handbook, which would result from a highly detailed and thoroughly comprehensive application of the method.

Organic Growth is a rigorous new concept, grounded in a common sense, two-pronged approach, that is, companies can continue to pursue high-risk, high-reward growth strategies, but they should also be very aware of overlooked or sub-optimized opportunities for growth within their own company. This book is a guide to how to dynamically combine managerial and 'people' skills to unlock a hidden layer of corporate value.

Book Resurrecting a Discipline

Download or read book Resurrecting a Discipline written by George Liska and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 1999 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Resurrecting a Discipline completes a trilogy in which George Liska, renowned scholar of international relations, encapsulates a lifetime of inquiry into past and present world politics. This final book examines the future of politics in general and of the discipline of international relations in particular, seeking a theory that combines the two. The author takes as his starting point former Secretary of State Dean Acheson's call for a 'usable theory' of international politics, integrating selections from his own many books on politics, world history, and international relations with analysis of the present and speculation on the future state of scholarship. Scholars of international relations, world politics, and political history will find this book a valuable addition to their collections.

Book excerpt: In their 1995 blockbuster The Discipline of Market Leaders, Michael Treacy and Fred Wiersema explained how great companies dominated their markets by offering superior value propositions. Now Treacy is back with an equally groundbreaking book—revealing how great companies master growth each year and how all businesses can identify and exploit opportunities for increased revenues, gross margins, and profits. Treacy's main point is simple—it really is possible to grow your business by 10 percent or more, year after year, in good times and bad, without cheating. Great companies already know how to do it, and the rest of us can learn their strategies and do the same thing. Using case studies from industry leaders such as Dell Computer, Home Depot, and GE, he shows the five steps that are imperative to ensure growth: • Keep the growth you have already earned • Look for growth where it's likely to be found • Take business from your competitors Treacy believes that any business can grow at a consistent double-digit rate, and with Double-Digit Growth, managers and investors now have the tools to achieve that lofty goal and maintain corporate success. Book The Discipline Culture of Innovation

Download or read book The Discipline Culture of Innovation written by Jay Rao and published by Profit Editorial. This book was released on 2013-01-01 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why do we forget about people when we talk about innovation? Innovation has been a popular subject for the last years. Bruce Nussbaum, perhaps exaggerating, said “Innovation died in 2008, killed off by overuse, misuse, narrowness, incrementalism and failure to evolve. It was done by CEOs, consultants, marketeers, advertisers and business journalists who degraded and devalued the idea by conflating it with change, technology, design, globalization, trendiness, and anything new. It was done by an obsession with measurement, metrics and maths and a demand for predictability in an unpredictable world.” If so, why another book on innovation? Because it is not one more book on the subject! It is a book that does not talk about innovation, but about people. Is there anything as important as people when innovating? This book describes how to create a true culture of innovation, a culture where innovation is not an objective, but a consequence.

Book The Discipline of Hope

Download or read book The Discipline of Hope written by Herbert R. Kohl and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 1998 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "It has been thirty years since Herbert Kohl taught the sixth-grade Harlem class he wrote about in his classic 36 Children. He has been teaching ever since, in kindergarten through graduate school, as he has pursued his lifelong work with children, adolescents, college-age students, and education professionals. In The Discipline of Hope, Kohl examines teaching as a vocation and as a skill, and examines his own love affair with it. He provides insight into how learning takes place in the widest range of circumstances, both in and out of a formal school setting. He demonstrates how schools and other centers of learning can be transformed so that they become places that nurture children while instilling discipline and how they can help students meet high academic standards, develop a sense of respect for themselves and others, and grow into successful adults." "Central to this book and at the core of the act of teaching as Kohl describes it is what he calls "the discipline of hope"the stubborn refusal to accept limits on what students can learn or what teachers can do by helping them discover the power of their minds. At a time when so many are complacent or skeptical about the possibilities of education, this book, with the experiences it describes, of teacher and taught, is an affirmation that provides guideposts, insight, and wisdom."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc.
