Book excerpt: Research on organic photovoltaic devices (OPV) has developed during the past 30 years, but especially in the last decade it has attracted scientific and economic interest triggered by a rapid increase in power conversion efficiencies. Thanks to the introduction of the bulk heterojunction (BHJ) concept, today BHJ OPV efficiencies are exceeding 9%. This thesis gives an overview on the different possible strategies that could be adopted for a further. improvement of BHJ OPV devices performances. The accurate analysis of the chemical, energetic and physical criteria governing the solar cells functioning allowed to individuate some critical aspects and apply possible solutions by a fine tuning of the materials chemical structures, device processing techniques and device architecture engineering. Even though noit in all cases the applied strategy successfully led to device efficiency improvements, the fundamental understanding of some of the efficiency limiting factors could serve as useful scientific basis for future developments.

Part of this is due to the costly manufacture of high purity silicon and the current fabrication methods for solar cells. Solution processable solar cells would mark a great stride forward to cost reduction. If such cells can be demonstrated to be efficient enough and stable enough it would be a turning point in history. However, solution processable devices still need much work before they can compete in the market. This text addresses characterization problems in the TEM, covers a study dealing with optimization strategies for organic bulk heterojunction devices, and introduces a strikingly high efficiency perovskite device that has a bulk heterojunction like structure. This text is arranged in four major portions; chapters 1 and 2, chapters 3 and 4, chapter 5, and chapter 6. The first two chapters give an introduction to some of the materials and microscopy techniques referred to throughout the text. Chapters 3 and 4 introduce a new sample thickness or density measurement technique (chapter 3), and illustrate how such a technique can be quite useful in studying organic photovoltaic materials by facilitating quantitative material fraction measurements (chapter 4). Next, chapter 5 details a study of organic photovoltaic systems highlighting optimization strategies. Specifically, chapter 5 describes the effect of various solvents and solvent annealing times on the P3HT/PCBM system. Finally, chapter 7 introduces a state-of-the-art, high efficiency perovskite device that exhibits large, single crystal domains as well as increased hole transport contact area through a bulk heterojunction like structure.

Book excerpt: A systematic study of the effects of alteration of processing parameters in combination with incorporation of polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) molecules on the properties and structure of bulk heterojunction organic photovoltaic cells made from P3HT:PCBM blends was undertaken. On implementing the correct processing protocol, incorporation of POSS molecules with specific structures resulted in considerable enhancement in cell efficiencies. Octaaminophenyl POSS incorporation resulted in a 20% increase in cell efficiency over the control and caused the formation of crystalline, fiber-like structures in the active layer of the photovoltaic cell.--P. iv.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A family of prototype .pi.-conjugated dendrimers has been synthesized and incorporated into solution-processable organic photovoltaic (OPV) devices. Bulk heterojunction devices were fabricated by blending the dendrimers with a solubilized fullerene. The best of these initial devices, which were not optimized for morphology, exhibited external quantum efficiencies of 22% at peak wavelength. It was found that 3-arm dendrimers, when sufficiently soluble, yielded higher photocurrents than their 4-arm counterparts. This was attributed to better planarity and intermolecular alignment of the 3-arm version. Device efficiency was seen to increase with increasing arm length. A reduced-band gap dendrimer was synthesized by attaching electron-withdrawing groups onto the core to yield an optical band gap of 1.82 eV.
