Book Liturgy and Society in Early Medieval Rome

Download or read book Liturgy and Society in Early Medieval Rome written by John F. Romano and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-05-06 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The liturgy, the public worship of the Catholic Church, was a crucial factor in forging the society of early medieval Rome. As the Roman Empire dissolved, a new world emerged as Christian bishops stepped into the power vacuum left by the dismantling of the Empire. Among these potentates, none was more important than the bishop of Rome, the pope. The documents, archaeology, and architecture that issued forth from papal Rome in the seventh and eighth centuries preserve a precious glimpse into novel societal patterns. The underexploited liturgical sources in particular enrich and complicate our historical understanding of this period. They show how liturgy was the ’social glue’ that held together the Christian society of early medieval Rome - and excluded those who did not belong to it. This study places the liturgy center stage, filling a gap in research on early medieval Rome and demonstrating the utility of investigating how the liturgy functioned in medieval Europe. It includes a detailed analysis of the papal Mass, the central act of liturgy and the most obvious example of the close interaction of liturgy, social relations and power. The first extant Mass liturgy, the First Roman Ordo, is also given a new presentation in Latin here with an English translation and commentary. Other grand liturgical events such as penitential processions are also examined, as well as more mundane acts of worship. Far from a pious business with limited influence, the liturgy established an exchange between humans and the divine that oriented Roman society to God and fostered the dominance of the clergy.

Book On Liturgical Theology

    Book Details:
  • Author : Aidan Kavanagh
  • Publisher : Liturgical Press
  • Release : 2017-02-28
  • ISBN : 0814660274
  • Pages : 224 pages

Download or read book On Liturgical Theology written by Aidan Kavanagh and published by Liturgical Press. This book was released on 2017-02-28 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nearly everything that theologians write on liturgy, Father Kavanagh notes, is often called liturgical theology, although on closer examination such works appear to be either dogmatic theologies about the liturgy or systematic theologies making use of liturgical data. None truly reflects how liturgy shapes theology or is theology or even relates to theology. This work is Father Kavanagh's effort to substantiate the existence of a truly liturgical theology. It will raise almost as many questions as it answers, but it will also further insight into theology and liturgy as it assays their relationship.

This book was released on 2023-12-27 with total page 387 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Christmas in Ritual and Tradition, Christian and Pagan is a study of the history and folklore surrounding Christmas holidays in several countries. It is an amazing collection of Christmas-related traditions from the first introductions of Christianity to the early 20th century. The book covers the history of Christmas as a Christian feast day and how that developed. It also discusses pre-Christian festivals and observances and how a lot of them survived by being given a Christian veneer although the overt paganism disappeared. Clement A. Miles (1881-1918), an author and translator, was a member of the Folk-Lore Society. He had been for many years on T. Fisher Unwin's literary staff and he was the author of an important work: Christmas in Ritual and Tradition. Miles possessed a wide knowledge of European languages, and translated numerous works from French and Italian.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Accessing Alcuin enables an excellent multi-disciplinary appreciation of the scholar and theologian, Alcuin, through the manuscript collections and scholarship of medieval history and culture, European Church history and theology. Douglas Dales has provided an authoritative bibliography that comprehensively incorporates the research material that enabled him to complete his definitive study of Alcuin. In this two-volume study, Alcuin: His Life and Legacy and Alcuin: Theology and Thought (both available from James Clarke and Co Ltd), the author demonstrated that the eighth-century theologian, teacher, and statesman was a seminal influence on his generation and those after him. This bibliography is a reflection of the immense research undertaken to reveal not only the rich panorama of Christian culture during the reign of Charlemagne, which is well supported by primary texts and secondary scholarship of high quality, but also the warm personality of Alcuin. This culmination of intense study, academic rigour and historical sensitivity will prompt a fresh evaluation and appreciation of the foundations of Christian culture in Europe. Accessing Alcuin is readily accessible as an e-resource for anyone teaching or researching this subject.
