Book Nonlinear Ordinary Differential Equations

Download or read book Nonlinear Ordinary Differential Equations written by Dominic Jordan and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2007-08-24 with total page 540 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a thoroughly updated and expanded 4th edition of the classic text Nonlinear Ordinary Differential Equations by Dominic Jordan and Peter Smith. Including numerous worked examples and diagrams, further exercises have been incorporated into the text and answers are provided at the back of the book. Topics include phase plane analysis, nonlinear damping, small parameter expansions and singular perturbations, stability, Liapunov methods, Poincare sequences, homoclinic bifurcation and Liapunov exponents. Over 500 end-of-chapter problems are also included and as an additional resource fully-worked solutions to these are provided in the accompanying text Nonlinear Ordinary Differential Equations: Problems and Solutions, (OUP, 2007). Both texts cover a wide variety of applications whilst keeping mathematical prequisites to a minimum making these an ideal resource for students and lecturers in engineering, mathematics and the sciences.

Book Nonlinear Dynamics and Chaotic Phenomena An Introduction

Download or read book Nonlinear Dynamics and Chaotic Phenomena An Introduction written by Bhimsen K. Shivamoggi and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-05-14 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book starts with a discussion of nonlinear ordinary differential equations, bifurcation theory and Hamiltonian dynamics. It then embarks on a systematic discussion of the traditional topics of modern nonlinear dynamics -- integrable systems, Poincaré maps, chaos, fractals and strange attractors. The Baker’s transformation, the logistic map and Lorenz system are discussed in detail in view of their central place in the subject. There is a detailed discussion of solitons centered around the Korteweg-deVries equation in view of its central place in integrable systems. Then, there is a discussion of the Painlevé property of nonlinear differential equations which seems to provide a test of integrability. Finally, there is a detailed discussion of the application of fractals and multi-fractals to fully-developed turbulence -- a problem whose understanding has been considerably enriched by the application of the concepts and methods of modern nonlinear dynamics. On the application side, there is a special emphasis on some aspects of fluid dynamics and plasma physics reflecting the author’s involvement in these areas of physics. A few exercises have been provided that range from simple applications to occasional considerable extension of the theory. Finally, the list of references given at the end of the book contains primarily books and papers used in developing the lecture material this volume is based on. This book has grown out of the author’s lecture notes for an interdisciplinary graduate-level course on nonlinear dynamics. The basic concepts, language and results of nonlinear dynamical systems are described in a clear and coherent way. In order to allow for an interdisciplinary readership, an informal style has been adopted and the mathematical formalism has been kept to a minimum. This book is addressed to first-year graduate students in applied mathematics, physics, and engineering, and is useful also to any theoretically inclined researcher in the physical sciences and engineering. This second edition constitutes an extensive rewrite of the text involving refinement and enhancement of the clarity and precision, updating and amplification of several sections, addition of new material like theory of nonlinear differential equations, solitons, Lagrangian chaos in fluids, and critical phenomena perspectives on the fluid turbulence problem and many new exercises.

Book CRC Handbook of Lie Group Analysis of Differential Equations

Download or read book CRC Handbook of Lie Group Analysis of Differential Equations written by Nail H. Ibragimov and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1994-11-28 with total page 570 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Volume 2 offers a unique blend of classical results of Sophus Lie with new, modern developments and numerous applications which span a period of more than 100 years. As a result, this reference is up to date, with the latest information on the group theoretic methods used frequently in mathematical physics and engineering. Volume 2 is divided into three parts. Part A focuses on relevant definitions, main algorithms, group classification schemes for partial differential equations, and multifaceted possibilities offered by Lie group theoretic philosophy. Part B contains the group analysis of a variety of mathematical models for diverse natural phenomena. It tabulates symmetry groups and solutions for linear equations of mathematical physics, classical field theory, viscous and non-Newtonian fluids, boundary layer problems, Earth sciences, elasticity, plasticity, plasma theory (Vlasov-Maxwell equations), and nonlinear optics and acoustics. Part C offers an English translation of Sophus Lie's fundamental paper on the group classification and invariant solutions of linear second-order equations with two independent variables. This will serve as a concise, practical guide to the group analysis of partial differential equations.

Book Handbook of Nonlinear Partial Differential Equations

Download or read book Handbook of Nonlinear Partial Differential Equations written by Andrei D. Polyanin and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2004-06-02 with total page 835 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Handbook of Nonlinear Partial Differential Equations is the latest in a series of acclaimed handbooks by these authors and presents exact solutions of more than 1600 nonlinear equations encountered in science and engineering--many more than any other book available. The equations include those of parabolic, hyperbolic, elliptic and other types, and the authors pay special attention to equations of general form that involve arbitrary functions. A supplement at the end of the book discusses the classical and new methods for constructing exact solutions to nonlinear equations. To accommodate different mathematical backgrounds, the authors avoid wherever possible the use of special terminology, outline some of the methods in a schematic, simplified manner, and arrange the equations in increasing order of complexity.
