Book Project CHECO Southeast Asia Report Operation Attleboro

Download or read book Project CHECO Southeast Asia Report Operation Attleboro written by and published by . This book was released on 1967 with total page 61 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Initiated on 14 September 1966, Operation ATTLEBORO was a search and destroy operation against enemy forces, base camps and supply areas located in War Zone C. The 196th Light Infantry Brigade was given operational control (OPCON) of ATTLEBORO, which also included units of the U.S. 25th Division and later the III Corps "Mike" Forces, who were Nung Chinese mercenary soldiers, usually led by U.S. Special Forces (USSF). Through the end of October, action had been only light and sporadic, with no major contact with the enemy. Air support was provided but the light action was reflected in the fact that, between 4 October and 1 November, only two immediate and 140 preplanned air sorties were needed to support the operation. This was an average of only five preplanned sorties per day. On 19 October, the operation was stepped up. ... By 30 October, the 196th Light infantry Brigade and elements of the U.S. 25th infantry Division were continuing sweeping operations near Dau Tieng but had now penetrated the fringes of this major Viet Cong build-up area and were threatening to disrupt the Viet Cong offensive plans, not to mention the possibility of uncovering the major VC base and supply area. On 31 October, 2/1 (2nd Battalion, 1st infantry Regiment) located a major logistic base of B-160 Section, Group 82, COSVN Rear Service Department, and captured 843 tons of rice. This was a major blow to the Viet Cong logistic system in the area and could hardly be tolerated. The stage was now set for a major confrontation between the 9th Viet Cong Division and U.S. forces in the jungles of War Zone C, a contest which was to precipitate, over the next two weeks, some of the heaviest fighting of the Vietnam war.

Download or read book Project CHECO Southeast Asia Report Ambush at XT 686576 written by and published by . This book was released on 1967 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On 17 October 1967, two companies of the 2d Battalion, 28th Infantry, were searching an area in the vicinity of the Long Nguyen Secret Base Area, a heavily jungled sector southeast of the Michelin Rubber Plantation in Binh Duong Province. The 1st Infantry had very reliable information that the 271st Main Force Regiment, 9th VC Division, was in the area. The 271st had been engaged by American forces in Operations EL PASO, ATTLEBORO, and JUNCTION CITY, It had a reputation for being especially adept at conducting double play ambushes, against an exposed force and against the reaction force sent out to assist. At 1015 hours on the morning of the 17th, the 271st, from preplanned and exceptionally well camouflaged jungle positions, savagely attacked searching columns of A and D Companies, 2d Battalion/28th at coordinates XT 686576. The attack, which lasted about two hours, resulted in 57 Americans killed, 63 wounded, and two missing. This classical enemy ambush emphasized one of the most difficult problems facing the U.S. in its war against the Viet Cong, How do you bring superior firepower to support friendlies in jungle areas which are suddenly hit from enemy positions only a few meters away?

Book Project CHECO Southeast Asia Report Operation HICKORY

Download or read book Project CHECO Southeast Asia Report Operation HICKORY written by and published by . This book was released on 1967 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The scenario of Operation HICKORY called for a multipronged assault into the DMZ, with forces of the 3rd Marine Division and Vietnamese Army (ARVN) units striking north into the heart of the lowland area, and a Marine landing force sweeping in from the eastern coast. Air support for the Marine units, including the landing force (SLF Alpha), was to be provided by the Marine tactical air arm, while close support for ARVN forces was to be provided by the 7AF TACS. On the day prior to the operation, the TACS was to provide USAF aircraft for preparatory strikes immediately north of the DMZ, with the Marines conducting air strikes inside the zone. The TACS was to provide continuous suppression strikes north of the attacking forces throughout the course of the operation. Obviously, in a multi-force operation of this nature, joint planning and close coordination were key tactical prerequisities. In the early phases of Operation HICKORY, however, several situations arose which indicated an inadequacy in-joint planning. Breakdowns in the system of-coordination on air requirements, on at least two occasions, jeopardized friendly forces. Had airpower been applied under a system of centralized control, it is likely these breakdowns could have-been avoided.

Book Project CHECO Southeast Asia Report USAF Support of Special Forces in SEA

Download or read book Project CHECO Southeast Asia Report USAF Support of Special Forces in SEA written by and published by . This book was released on 1969 with total page 111 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first Air Commando units arrived in Vietnam in November 1961, and since then the USAF has become an integral component in supplying Special Forces Camps with tactical airpower, airland/airdrop replenishment of supplies and instant guidance, as well as short reaction airpower to ground reconnaissance teams. In its special Seventh Air Force/5th Special Forces (SF) partnership, three primary roles of the U.S. Air Force are recounted. First, when vulnerable Special Forces Camps came under attack, it was USAF firepower that provided the heavy counterblows in their defense. More than one camp owes its continued existence to the quick and devastating reaction of the USAF. Second, Special Forces Camps have been almost entirely dependent upon airlift for their logistical support and this, too, has been a vital mission of the Air Force. Finally, in 1965, the U.S. Air Force began an association with Special Forces ground reconnaissance teams; it has produced some of the most efficient and effective ground missions of the war. The expanding role of Air Force Forward Air Controllers in Special Forces operations--an expansion strongly urged by SF commanders throughout the Republic of Vietnam--is addressed in Chapter V.

Book Project CHECO Southeast Asia Report Pave Mace Combat Rendezvous

Download or read book Project CHECO Southeast Asia Report Pave Mace Combat Rendezvous written by and published by . This book was released on 1972 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study documents the conception, birth, death and resurrection of gunship beacon offset firing techniques. Two entirely different systems--Pave Mace and Combat Rendezvous--are discussed. These systems enabled USAF fixed wing gunships to deliver safe, sustained, and effective aerial fire on enemy ground forces in close proximity to friendly forces when both are invisible from the air. The primary purpose of this report is to show from well-documented experience that these systems represent an in-being, revolutionary, all-weather, close air support capability never before achieved. The report also examines the sometimes unconventional, often torturous, and almost always frustrating process by which the USAF developed, tested, introduced, and finally used these systems in combat. In so doing it suggests some obvious lessons which may facilitate more systematic management of future weapons systems. The report also shows how interservice rivalry, roles and missions considerations, and force structure issues impeded and almost prevented the introduction of systems who rapid deployment would have been in the best interest of both services. Hopefully, this experience may suggest how such opposition can be overcome in the future by showing how it was overcome in this instance. The report seeks to provide sufficient technical information about each system to enable the reader to understand how each system operates and to compare their relative merits and shortcomings. In so doing it reveals a number of problems with both systems which have not yet been overcome and discussed possible solutions that have been advanced. Finally, this study shows how each system has saved the lives of friendly ground forces who would otherwise have died had it not been for these systems.

Book Project CHECO Southeast Asia Report Attack on Udorn

Download or read book Project CHECO Southeast Asia Report Attack on Udorn written by and published by . This book was released on 1968 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From a number of Thai air bases, the USAF waged air campaigns against enemy targets, troops, and supply lines in North Vietnam, Laos, and South Vietnam. The security of these bases was an extremely important matter. On the night of 26 July 1968, the first attack was launched against one of these bases. While the assault was repelled and the resulting damage was not excessive, a number of inadequacies in base defense were clearly indicated. This CHECO report outlines the concepts of base security, which existed before the attack; describes the assault on Udorn Royal Thai Air Force Base (RTAFB); and explains how the defensive plans were implemented. It profiles changes and improvements effected in security arrangements subsequent to the attack. To better understand how planners grappled with the problems and evolved solutions, it is necessary to view base security against the background of a mounting threat, limited funding, and certain restrictive Thai/US agreements.

Book Project CHECO Southeast Asia Report The Employment of Air by the Thais and Koreans in SEA

Download or read book Project CHECO Southeast Asia Report The Employment of Air by the Thais and Koreans in SEA written by and published by . This book was released on 1970 with total page 49 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thailand's chief contribution to air activities in Vietnam was in providing 45 Air Force personnel to man Vietnamese and USAF transport aircraft--an area in which crew shortages were chronic. In lesser numbers, forward air controllers were also provided. For the Allies, the Thai pilots and crew members meant a welcome augmentation of personnel, while the Thais for their part viewed their own contribution as more than a mere gesture in favor of the anti-Communist effort. For them, these activities were an opportunity to gain war-zone experience. The training of Thais was largely neglected, however, until, in 1970, the winding down of the war produced shortages in the, more highly skilled categories of USAF personnel, such as transport aircraft crewmen. These shortages signaled the need for training and upgrading. Similar circumstances led the USAF to realize that certain Thai personnel being used solely as interpreters for U.S. forward air controllers (FACs) could be trained to be FACs themselves. Korea, with its 50,000 men, provided the second largest expeditionary force after that of the United States in helping the South Vietnamese Government defeat the aggression disguised as insurrection by its author in Hanoi. Perhaps because of the Koreans' large numbers of ground troops, they relied very little upon support from tactical air. The apparent success of their vigorous, often harsh, methods further convinced the Koreans that reliance upon themselves alone was sufficient. Like the Thais, they had no aircraft in Vietnam to speak of, and these few were used only for liaison. The story of their involvement in the air war can, therefore, be told in a few pages.

Book Project CHECO Southeast Asia Report Army Aviation in RVN A Case Study

Download or read book Project CHECO Southeast Asia Report Army Aviation in RVN A Case Study written by and published by . This book was released on 1970 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Three basic components completed the U.S. Army aviation spectrum in Southeast Asia based upon assignment. The first category was assigned by Tables of Organization and Equipment (TOE) to the two Army airmobile divisions, the 1st Cavalry, and the 101st Airborne Divisions--each equipped with an aviation group. The second category included aviation assets assigned by the TOE to U.S. Army units in other than an airmobile configuration. A conventional division had an aviation battalion plus an air cavalry troop; smaller ground units had aviation sections to provide general support. This CHECO Report examines the third category--nonorganic aviation assets dedicated to provide various types of support at the Corps Tactical Zone (CTZ) level. The II, III, and IV CTZs each had one aviation group in a general support role. "Army Aviation in RVN - A Case Study" profiles the 12th Aviation Group in III CTZ, which supported II Field Force Vietnam, explaining how its aircraft were allocated and used by ground units.

Book excerpt: No Wider War is the second volume of a two-part exploration of America's involvement in Indochina from the end of World War II to the Fall of Saigon. Following on from the first volume, In Good Faith, which told the story from the Japanese surrender in 1945 through America's involvement in the French Indochina War and the initial advisory missions that followed, it traces the story of America's involvement in the Vietnam War from the first Marines landing at Da Nang in 1965, through the traumatic Tet Offensive of 1968 and the gradual Vietnamisation of the war that followed, to the withdrawal of American forces and the final loss of the South in 1975. Drawing on the latest research, unavailable to the authors of the classic Vietnam histories, including recently declassified top secret National Security Agency material, Sergio Miller examines in depth both the events and the key figures of the conflict to present a masterful narrative of America's most divisive war.
