Book excerpt: Excerpt from Open-Air Preaching: A Practical Manual for Pastors, Evangelists, and Other Christian Workers In London I have seen street-preaching time and again. In fact, near the Tower Hamlet's mission, on the broad sidewalk, I have seen two services going on at the same time, the one not more than two hundred feet from the other, and in one the Gospel was being proclaimed red-hot, while in the other equally red-hot atheism was being set forth. Men went from the one to the other, and yet all was done decently and in order. I was pleased to see that the Gospel preacher got and held a larger audience than the infidel. In New York this same method has been adopted with marked results. It makes with us very little difference what the weather is. The people will stand and listen even if the thermometer is down to the freezing point, and the rain makes not much change in their attendance. Where the preaching is regular, there are always those who will come week after week, and if there are tenement houses near, they will throw up the windows and listen to the truth. We have also used the stereopticon in giving pictures Of the life of Christ, - and this is a very popular service. If held outside of the church, you can then at the close of the service get many to enter who could be gotten hold of in no other way. But what is the use of saying anything more on the subject when it is so fully discussed in this volume? All that is needed in an introduction is that the writer should commend that which is to be found in'the vo'lume, and say that he is in hearty accord with it. This I do with all my heart, and commend the practice to all who Wish to Obey their Master's injunctions, and 'f go out into the high ways and hedges and compel them to come in. Mr. Byington has done a most needed work, and has done it well, and now only one thing remains, and that is for the readers of the book to carry out the practical suggestions that they will find in its pages. Book excerpt: This is seen by the indisputable fact that the greatest and most influential preachers and teachers of the ages past, and the age in which we now live, have made constant use of it.The messages of the prophets were delivered in the open air. God's call to the prophet was: "Go, proclaim these words in the streets of the city" (Jer. 11:6). The sublime evangelical predictions of Isaiah; the mournful dirges of Jeremiah; the symbolical and picturesque visions of Ezekiel-all these, for the most part, were announced in the streets of the great cities of Jerusalem and Babylon. Throughout the streets of Nineveh resounded the warning voice of the prophet Jonah. The message of Micah, Nahum, and the rest of the minor prophets was, without question, "a song of the winds." Nehemiah's great revival sermon-a sermon which resulted in an almost national revival-was preached in the street of Jerusalem, close to the water-gate. (Neh. 8:1, 3.)The open-air worker and preacher of to-day, then, is in "the goodly order of the prophets."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the midst of a godless culture, Paul did what was necessary to reach the masses with the message of everlasting life: he reasoned about Jesus in the marketplace daily with those who happened to be there (Acts 17:17) and preached on Mars Hill, on the main route to the Parthenon in Athens. We too are living in the midst of a godless society, and those in the streets desperately need to hear Gods Word. If we are serious about reaching this dying world, let us emulate Jesus and the apostles and preach where sinners gather. In thirty minutes, a good open-air preacher can reach more unsaved people than the average church does in a year. If youre ready for something more exhilarating than skydiving, arguably more scary, and infinitely more productive, try preaching the gospel in public. For nearly fifty years Ray Comfort has preached the gospel in the open air and witnessed one-to-one to thousands. During those years he has learned certain biblical principles that make reaching the lost so much easier. In this publication you will find everything he learned and everything you need to know: Who should do it? Where should you go? How do you get started? What do you say? With this helpful guide, you too can follow in the footsteps of the Savior and preach the Word on the street. There is no higher calling.

Book excerpt: For more than two and a half years, Ray Comfort and Emeal ("E.Z.") Zwayne (the General Manager of The Way of the Master and Living Waters Publications), preached the gospel on public land in front of a courthouse in Bellflower, California. Each day they were able to share with between 40 and 60 people who were lined up waiting to enter the building. During that time, an estimated 30,000 people heard the gospel. However, on Friday September 30th, 2005, a Los Angeles judge issues a court order forbidding free speech on public soil -- not only outside of the Bellflower Courts but on the grounds of more than forty courthouses in Los Angeles County. Fortunately, our soundman Stuart Scott recorded the last 29 days of the preaching.
