Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Over 400 years ago, in 1528, an African named Estevanico first set foot in Florida near present-day Tampa as part of a Spanish exploration party. Since then, African Americans in Florida have continued to set examples of courage, perseverance, and leadership. In this book you will read about some people you may already know about--such as Ray Charles and Carrie Pittman Meek--and many others whose lives are also inspirational, even if their names are not so familiar. Though many African Americans started life in poverty and had to fight racial injustice, their stories prove that the desire to succeed can overcome many obstacles. They followed their dreams to become teachers, artists, soldiers, lawyers, nurses, sports stars, authors, and many other occupations. Their important contributions to the state and to the country enrich us all. This book also includes detailed descriptions of the 141 historical and cultural sites on the Florida Black Heritage Trail and a calendar of significant dates in the history of African Americans in Florida"--Publisher description.

Book Rebuilding the American Town

Download or read book Rebuilding the American Town written by David Gamble and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-12-10 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the scholarship of urbanism, small towns are overlooked and understudied. Rebuilding the American Town highlights how smaller municipalities are transforming to serve their communities and meet the future. The book uncovers creative planning and design strategies of nine U.S. towns as they rebuild to remain vibrant, equitable and viable in the face of metropolitan sprawl, population shifts, political division, economic shortfalls and climate change. Rebuilding the American Town includes interviews and insights from those directly involved, to reveal the challenges and advantages of being a smaller city while highlighting the power of design at local levels. The book provides a new lens for contemporary urbanism more broadly as it shifts thinking away from large-metro concerns, toward novel, tactical strategies that advance the quality of life for residents through design and policies that are scaled to the populations and places they serve. The projects in this book show how the small town in the United States is unexpectedly progressive, experimental, urban and global.

Book Black Miami in the Twentieth Century

Download or read book Black Miami in the Twentieth Century written by Marvin Dunn and published by University Press of Florida. This book was released on 1997-11-19 with total page 301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first book devoted to the history of African Americans in south Florida and their pivotal role in the growth and development of Miami, Black Miami in the Twentieth Century traces their triumphs, drudgery, horrors, and courage during the first 100 years of the city's history. Firsthand accounts and over 130 photographs, many of them never published before, bring to life the proud heritage of Miami's black community. Beginning with the legendary presence of black pirates on Biscayne Bay, Marvin Dunn sketches the streams of migration by which blacks came to account for nearly half the city’s voters at the turn of the century. From the birth of a new neighborhood known as "Colored Town," Dunn traces the blossoming of black businesses, churches, civic groups, and fraternal societies that made up the black community. He recounts the heyday of "Little Broadway" along Second Avenue, with photos and individual recollections that capture the richness and vitality of black Miami's golden age between the wars. A substantial portion of the book is devoted to the Miami civil rights movement, and Dunn traces the evolution of Colored Town to Overtown and the subsequent growth of Liberty City. He profiles voting rights, housing and school desegregation, and civil disturbances like the McDuffie and Lozano incidents, and analyzes the issues and leadership that molded an increasingly diverse community through decades of strife and violence. In concluding chapters, he assesses the current position of the community--its socioeconomic status, education issues, residential patterns, and business development--and considers the effect of recent waves of immigration from Latin America and the Caribbean. Dunn combines exhaustive research in regional media and archives with personal interviews of pioneer citizens and longtime residents in a work that documents as never before the life of one of the most important black communities in the United States.

Download or read book The Place of the Mosque written by Akel Ismail Kahera and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2022-06-14 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Place of the Mosque: Genealogies of Space, Knowledge, and Power extends Foucault’s analysis, Of Other Spaces, and the “ideological conflicts which underlie the controversies of our day [and] take place between pious descendants of time and tenacious inhabitants of space.” This book uses Foucault’s framework to illuminate how mosques have been threatened in the past, from the Cordóba Mosque in the eighth century, to the development of Moorish aesthetics in the United States in the nineteenth century, to the clashes surrounding the building of mosques in the West in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. Akel Kahera uses Foucault’s genealogy to elaborate on and study the subjects that are caught in the emergence of a battle—the social and political will to power, the networks of power, and the rituals of power—within the interstitial space. In going beyond individual buildings to broader geographical and genealogical dimensions of the power struggles, The Place of the Mosque reconciles the public space experience, governmentality, and micro powers, paving the way for a new philosophical language. Expanding architectural and urban regional approaches, Kahera shows the biopolitical significance of the problem of space.
