Book One Hundred Years of Service Through Community

Download or read book One Hundred Years of Service Through Community written by Steven K. Smith and published by University Press of America. This book was released on 2014-04-28 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This reader consists of diverse writings about Gould Farm, considered the nation’s oldest residential rehabilitation community. The Farm now assists those with persistent mental illness. Informed by a Christianity that was neither sectarian nor doctrinaire, yet steeped in the Sermon on the Mount, Will Gould and his wife, Agnes, founded the Farm in 1913. In addition to serving those who arrive at Gould Farm as “guests,” the Farm has assisted refugees during World War II, hosted civil rights activists in the 1950s and 1960s, and sponsored three Vietnamese brothers who fled their country in the 1970s. More recently, the Farm hosted a family navigating the loss of a loved one in Iraq. One Hundred Years of Service Through Community includes essays, letters, and book excerpts about Gould Farm written over the last 100 years including pieces by theologian James Luther Adams, author Rosemary Antin, sociologist Henrik F. Infield, Haverford College’s Douglas V. Steere, and Appalachian Trail founder Benton MacKaye. The book also includes a story of a brief encounter in 1961 between a Gould Farm executive director, a guest, and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Book excerpt: In his inaugural address in 1993, President Clinton said: "I challenge a new generation of young Americans to a season of service to act on your idealism by helping troubled children, keeping company with those in need, reconnecting our torn communities." In the fall of 1990, Suzanne Goldsmith had signed on for her own "season of service" with City Year, the widely praised, Boston-based community service program frequently endorsed by political figures as a model for the nation. 'A City Year' is the story of Goldsmith's experience, an honest and gritty account of the triumphs and setbacks faced by an idealistic and experimental social program in its infancy. Together with a diverse team of young men and women--including a Burmese immigrant, a white prep-school graduate, a foster child, an ex-convict, and a black middle-class college student--Goldsmith helped renovate a building for the homeless, tutored school children, reclaimed a community garden from drug dealers, and organized a community street-cleaning day. The year Included backbreaking but gratifying work, the sense of family that comes from collaborative labor, and the potential strength of diversity. 'A City Year' is both the story of an uphill battle in urban America and an uplifting recipe for social change. As the AmeriCorps national service program dangles in the political wind on Capitol Hill, this book offers a true glimpse of what a "season of service" really means. It is a fascinating account for sociologists and all those with an interest in community service and youth.

Book One Hundred Years of Solitude

Download or read book One Hundred Years of Solitude written by Gabriel García Márquez and published by Blackstone Publishing. This book was released on 2022-10-11 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the twentieth century’s enduring works, One Hundred Years of Solitude is a widely beloved and acclaimed novel known throughout the world and the ultimate achievement in a Nobel Prize–winning career. The novel tells the story of the rise and fall of the mythical town of Macondo through the history of the Buendía family. Rich and brilliant, it is a chronicle of life, death, and the tragicomedy of humankind. In the beautiful, ridiculous, and tawdry story of the Buendía family, one sees all of humanity, just as in the history, myths, growth, and decay of Macondo, one sees all of Latin America. Love and lust, war and revolution, riches and poverty, youth and senility, the variety of life, the endlessness of death, the search for peace and truth—these universal themes dominate the novel. Alternately reverential and comical, One Hundred Years of Solitude weaves the political, personal, and spiritual to bring a new consciousness to storytelling. Translated into dozens of languages, this stunning work is no less than an account of the history of the human race.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One Hundred Years of Social Work is the first comprehensive history of social work as a profession in English Canada. The book chronicles the early history of the secularization and professionalization of social work and examines social workers roles during both world wars, the Depression, and in the era of postwar reconstruction. It includes sections on civil defence, the Cold War, unionization, social work education, regulation of the profession, and other key developments up to the end of the twentieth century. Book One Hundred Years History Of The Chinese In Singapore The Annotated Edition

Download or read book One Hundred Years History Of The Chinese In Singapore The Annotated Edition written by Ong Siang Song and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2020-03-12 with total page 873 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since its publication in 1923, Sir Song Ong Siang's One Hundred Years' History of the Chinese in Singapore has become the standard biographical reference of prominent Chinese in early Singapore, at least in the English language. This fact would have surprised Song who saw himself primarily as a compiler of historical and biographical snippets. The original was not referenced in academic fashion and contained a number of errors. This annotation by the Singapore Heritage Society takes Song's classic text and updates it with detailed annotations of sources that Song himself might have consulted, and includes more recent scholarship on the lives and times of various personalities who are mentioned in the original book. This annotated edition is commissioned by the National Library Board, Singapore and co-published with World Scientific Publishing.

Book One Hundred Years of Kibbutz Life

Download or read book One Hundred Years of Kibbutz Life written by Michal Palgi and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 367 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One Hundred Years of Kibbutz Life shows that the kibbutz thrives and describes changes that have occurred within Israel's kibbutz community. The kibbutz population has increased in terms of demography and capital, a point frequently overlooked in debates regarding viability. Like the kibbutz founders who established a society grounded in certain principles and meeting certain goals, kibbutz newcomers seek to build an idealistic society with specific social and economic arrangements. The years 1909-2009 marked a century of kibbutz life?one hundred years of achievements, challenges, and creative changes. The impact of kibbutzim on Israeli society has been substantial but is now waning. While kibbutzim have become less relevant in Israeli policy and politics, they are increasingly engaged in questions of environmentalism, education, and profitable industries.Contributors discuss the hopes, goals, frustrations, and disappointments of the kibbutz movement. They also examine reform efforts intended to revitalize the institution and reinforce fading kibbutz ideals. Such solutions are not always popular among kibbutz members, but they demonstrate that the kibbutz is an adaptive and flexible social organization. The various studies presented in this book clarify the dynamism of the kibbutz institution and raises questions about the ways in which residential arrangements throughout the world manage change.
