Scarlett Cole takes you apart and puts you back together again." ~ Carly Phillips, NY Times Bestselling Author Matt Loving Izabel Bryson should be the easiest thing in the world. Heck, she’s been the inspiration for at least half a dozen of the songs he’s written for his rock band, Sad Fridays. He’s loved her for a decade. But she’s his best friend and fellow-band mate’s little sister, and he promised a decade ago that he’d never put his hands on her. She can never be his, no matter how much he craves her. Izabel Loving Matt Palmer is the most hopeless thing in the world. The hours she spends working at the Manchester homeless shelter only go so far in distracting her from the painful truth. He doesn’t want her. Because she screwed up that awful night two years before when she slept with Matt’s brother. He will never be hers, no matter how much she yearns for him. When a good deed leads to one bed, and one night of ruthless honesty, everything is laid bare. They belong together, but acting on it will cost them everything.
Download or read book On A Day Like This written by Peter Stamm and published by Other Press, LLC. This book was released on 2010-02-23 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new novel of artful understatement about mortality, estrangement, and the absurdity of life from the acclaimed author of Unformed Landscape and In Strange Gardens On a day like any other, Andreas changes his life. When a routine doctor’s visit leads to an unexpected prognosis, a great yearning takes hold of him—but who can tell if it is homesickness or wanderlust? Andreas leaves everything behind, sells his Paris apartment; cuts off all social ties; quits his teaching job; and waves goodbye to his days spent idly sitting in cafes—to look for a woman he once loved, half a lifetime ago. The monotony of days has been keeping him in check; now he hopes for a miracle and for a new beginning. Andreas’ travels lead him back to the province of his youth, back to his hometown in Switzerland where he returns to familiar streets, where his brother still lives in their childhood home, and where Fabienne, a woman he was obsessed with in his youth, visits the same lake they once swam in together. Andreas, still consumed with longing for his lost love and blinded by the uncertainty of his future, is tormented by the question of what might have been if things had happened differently. Peter Stamm has been praised as a “stylistic ascetic” and his prose as “distinguished by lapidary expression, telegraphic terseness, and finely tuned sensitivity” (Bookforum). In On a Day Like This, Stamm’s unobtrusive observational style allows us to journey with our antihero through his crises of banality, of living in his empty world, and the realization that life is finite—that one must live it, as long as that is possible. Praise for Unformed Landscape: “Sensitive and unnerving. . . . An uncommonly intimate work, one that will remind the reader of his or her own lived experience with a greater intensity than many of the books that are published right here at home.” —The New Republic Online “If Albert Camus had lived in an age when people in remote Norwegian fishing villages had e-mail, he might have written a novel like this.”—The New Yorker “Unformed Landscape has a refreshing purity, a lack of delusion, a lack of hype.”—Los Angeles Times

This book was released on 2022-01-12 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are many who struggle at the loss of any kind and the rising thoughts of defeat, which can seem crippling to life. There are times when we need someone to talk to or with who can intervene as we travel on the highway to self-destruction. As it is, life all by itself can present us with situations and circumstances that can appear derailing because we are not sure how or what to do about them. If you lose a loved one, it can be a crippling event; however, everyone will not experience the same emotional tie or disconnection simply because of the nature of that relationship. Within the same family structure, there will be different reactions and feelings. It all depends on the depth of the relationship. And understand, the love we have for our family will always outweigh our ability to provide for them. In life, we find ourselves being caregivers to those whom we love and care for dearly. We give all we have regarding doing what we can with what we have, and some may still impose upon us the feelings of falling short simply from their prospective of what is being done. It will be these responses of disregard that push some, if not many, over the edge toward giving up, frustration, and even relational disconnection. We commit ourselves to provide care in areas that are beyond our understood abilities, only to at times be humiliated and aggravated to the point of giving up and shutting down. And while it is not fair to you, those who express their discontent with your efforts seem to not be concerned with what those negative comments may do to you. This is that part of life that can be daunting to the unsupported. This is that time in our lives when, if we are not sure of our mental resolve and spiritual determination to try knowing that help will be provided, we can easily find life more challenging than desired. So how do we get through these times? What do we do when it seems there is no support? Are we allowed to walk away when we feel we have nothing left to give? These are the kinds of questions that the author endeavors to bring clarity to. As a counselor by desire and having experienced many who have struggled with life's many challenges as a result of losing a loved one, the goal with this work is to provide some sense of guidance for those struggling with the thoughts of frustration and bewilderment. Will all your questions be answered? I am sure they will not, but at least, you will have a better grasp on why you are, where you are, in dealing with your struggle. Yes, as a pastor by calling, this work is laced with biblical insights that prayerfully will provide a sound and structured focus for the reader. This is a Christian counseling method using the strongest means of awakening possible, the Word of God. The primary intention of this book is to give the reader a spiritual understanding of the stress and frustration that may be taking place in their lives because of life's challenges because of loss. I want you to hear with your heart and mind and understand why you are having the experience you have. Yes, your thinking will be challenged, and what you call faith will be questioned, but your end resolve is in your acceptance of your reality of life.

Download or read book Exchange Is Not Robbery written by John M. Chernoff and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2013-02-11 with total page 442 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While living in West Africa in the 1970s, John Chernoff recorded the stories of "Hawa," a spirited and brilliant but uneducated woman whose insistence on being respected and treated fairly propelled her, ironically, into a life of marginality and luck as an "ashawo," or bar girl. Rejecting traditional marriage options and cut off from family support, she is like many women in Africa who come to depend on the help they receive from one another, from boyfriends, and from the men they meet in bars and nightclubs. Refusing to see herself as a victim, Hawa embraces the freedom her lifestyle permits and seeks the broadest experience available to her. In Exchange Is Not Robbery and its predecessor, Hustling Is Not Stealing, a chronicle of exploitation is transformed by verbal art into an ebullient comedy. In Hustling Is Not Stealing, Hawa is a playful warrior struggling against circumstances in Ghana and Togo. In Exchange Is Not Robbery, Hawa returns to her native Burkina Faso, where she achieves greater control over her life but faces new difficulties. As a woman making sacrifices to live independently, Hawa sees her own situation become more complex as she confronts an atmosphere in Burkina Faso that is in some ways more challenging than the one she left behind, and the moral ambiguities of her life begin to intensify. Combining elements of folklore and memoir, Hawa's stories portray the diverse social landscape of West Africa. Individually the anecdotes can be funny, shocking, or poignant; assembled together they offer a sweeping critical and satirical vision.

Download or read book Machine age Comedy written by Michael North and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2009 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this latest addition to Oxford's Modernist Literature & Culture series, renowned modernist scholar Michael North poses fundamental questions about the relationship between modernity and comic form in film, animation, the visual arts, and literature. Machine-Age Comedy vividly constructs a cultural history that spans the entire twentieth century, showing how changes wrought by industrialization have forever altered the comic mode. With keen analyses, North examines the work of a wide range of artists--including Charlie Chaplin, Walt Disney, Marcel Duchamp, Samuel Beckett, and David Foster Wallace--to show the creative and unconventional ways the routinization of industrial society has been explored in a broad array of cultural forms. Throughout, North argues that modern writers and artists found something inherently comic in new experiences of repetition associated with, enforced by, and made inevitable by the machine age. Ultimately, this rich, tightly focused study offers a new lens for understanding the devlopment of comedic structures during periods of massive social, political, and cultural change to reveal how the original promise of modern life can be extracted from its practical disappointment.

Book excerpt: Pathway of Light is a book of poems based on the life of the author. These are unlike any poems you've ever read. Real life situations are turned into words that rhyme. They will touch your heart and soul. Through reading these heart-felt poems, you will be challenged in ways you may not imagine possible! You will laugh, cry, and perhaps even pray. The author has been through times of lonliness, hopelessness, heartache, fear and shattered dreams, as well as times of great joy, peace, and hope beyond her dreams! She found there's a difference between having religion, and having a relationship with God. In the hardest time of her life, she had little desire to live. But, something kept her going, Someone, rather. A thirst entered her soul, to seek the meaning of life. God touched her heart and soul, setting her on a quest to understand why most of what she learned in traditional religion was not biblical. She found that we must not turn to others to get to Heaven- but to God Himself! After writing poems through it all, she shared some with her husband and close friends, who encouraged her to publish them, that others may receive hope, too. As you read, be encouraged and discover God's great faithfulness!
