Book One Corner of an Ancient Land

Download or read book One Corner of an Ancient Land written by V. Parker Kennedy and published by Boolarong Press. This book was released on 2017 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is simply a collection of stories about ordinary people who lived such extraordinary lives in the Australian outback during the latter half of the 19th century, enduring both perilous and inconceivable experiences. These stories are of tragedy, hardship and unbelievable cruelty, but also of laughter and survival of the fittest and most of all the resilience and hardship of the women who accompanied their men. Though fictional, all stories are based on actual events and real people you won’t find in the history books. Many of these stories are based on and influenced by conversations the author enjoyed with a wonderful old gentleman called John Peter Kennedy, known always as Jack. He was a well-known wit and raconteur who had spent most of his life beyond the Selwyn Ranges in north-west Queensland. These are the stories of the unsung heroes of the Australian outback.

Book The World s Earliest Music Traced to Its Beginnings in Ancient Lands

Download or read book The World s Earliest Music Traced to Its Beginnings in Ancient Lands written by Hermann Smith and published by Library of Alexandria. This book was released on 2020-09-28 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: THE human interest in the past never dies, its hold upon us increases with the growing years, and every gain that is made to the store of knowledge does but add to the zest with which we search for more; nation vies with nation for the glory of recovering relics of life that are strewn along the path of death. From the sands and from the tombs, from the paintings and the graven tablets, and from the faces of the rocks we rehabilitate the vision of the mighty dead; a recovered name is a page of a people’s history, and we seek with renewal of eagerness for the pages that should follow or precede. The long buried spoils of temples and palaces excite the imagination, the grandeur of gold and silver, the wealth of art and ornament, and the resplendent jewels, appeal to the love of power and of possession, active or dormant in every heart; yet not less do we treasure the fragile mementoes, the simplest things, rendered up from the past that were the surroundings of domestic life, that speak to us of the household ways, and of the personal pursuits of the men, and of the adornment of the women who for untold ages have ever sought “their pleasure in their power to charm.” The instruments of music that in the remoter ages of the past were in daily use are seldom found, for the nature of the materials of which they were constructed was adverse to their preservation; those that have been found are rarely in their original condition, perfect in all their parts, or suitable for being put to the test of playing, and the resource left to us is to obtain some approximate condition by means of models, and then adapt some modern method for eliciting sound, which method as near as we can judge shall be the counterpart of the original device.

Book Holman Illustrated Guide To Biblical Geography

Download or read book Holman Illustrated Guide To Biblical Geography written by Holman Bible Publishers and published by B&H Publishing Group. This book was released on 2020-12-01 with total page 572 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reading the land enables us to read the Bible with greater insight. Though the truths of the Bible transcend time and place, they are rooted in them. Geographical data inform our understanding of activity in the land of the Bible, while the Bible’s own description of these events, embedded deeply in the realia of the land itself, helps us better understand the living context in which these events took place. When we develop a skill set that allows us to read the land of the Bible as fluently as we might read the text, we stand not only to gain a better appreciation of the divine-human events of Scripture, we also gain an understanding of how these events become relevant to us in our own particular living contexts. Chapters include: Exploring the World of the Bible Building Blocks of Biblical Geography The Land of Ancient Israel: The Southern Regions (Judah/Judea) The Land of Ancient Israel: The Central Regions (Israel/Samaria) The Land of Ancient Israel: The Northern Regions (Galilee) Transjordan Afterword: Geography of the Heart Biblical geography has great apologetic value. The biblical writers had to be accurate when presenting geographical material. Unlike some matters of history and doctrine, their assertions about the realities of land forms and climate, or about the relation of one city to another, or about the use of strategic routes could easily be verified both by their first readers as well as by contemporary readers. Verifiable geographic information provides a solid foundation on which to place and evaluate the veracity of other truth claims in the biblical text.

Book Dark Days

Download or read book Dark Days written by Tan Kheng Yeang and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2011-04-18 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1941, Tan Kheng Yeang is a student at the University of Hong Kong as the maelstrom of war engulfs the Pacific Theatre. In December, after many days of brave resistance, the colony of Hong Kong finally falls to the Japanese, and Yeang is unwittingly caught up in that horror that ensues. In this personal memoir, Yeang shares the hardships suffered by the people of China during World War II as the result of Japanese militarism. With a poignant narrative style, Yeang details the brutality of invading forces that seemed to know no bounds as they massacre, rape, and lootturning a splendid city into a region of misery destroyed by the constant humiliations inflicted by Japanese soldiers. As the atrocities continue and the death toll climbs, Yeang details how he and his classmates made the fateful decision to flee to mainland China. As they embark on a compelling journey of human endurance and determination, the refugees struggle across China and face difficult climate conditions, unreliable modes of transportation, and primitive living conditionsall while fearing further pursuit and attacks by the enemy. Dark Days shares an unforgettable glimpse into how rampart militarism forever changed the lives of ordinary people.
