Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Book of One-Act Plays Now if this same theme were to be developed in the short story it might have a tendency to become sentimental; it would then demand a fuller treatment, and there is danger in expanding what is best when only stated. But here in the little drama there is nothing irreverent, nothing cheap. Like the short story, the one-act play would teach as well as entertain. The Exchange illustrates well the acceptability of dramatic teaching, and the superiority of its portrayal over the didacticism of a story in the Hawthorne style. Book Five One Act Plays Classic Reprint

Download or read book Five One Act Plays Classic Reprint written by Stanley Houghton and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-30 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Five One Act Plays (Note. - The terms "Left" and "Right" in the stage directions refer to the spectator's left and right, not the actor's.) The scene is the sitting-room of a small house in a lower middle-class district of a provincial town. On the spectator's left is the window, with the blinds down. A sofa is in front of it. On his right is a fireplace with an armchair by it. In the middle of the wall facing the spectator is the door into the passage. To the left of the door a cheap, shabby chest of drawers, to the right a sideboard. In the middle of the room is the table, with chairs round it. Ornaments and a cheap American clock are on the mantelpiece, in the hearth a kettle. By the sideboard a pair of gaudy new carpet slippers. The table is partly laid for tea, and the necessaries for the meal are on the sideboard, as also are copies of an evening paper and of "Tit-Bils" and "Pearson's Weekly." Turning to the left through the door takes you to the front door; to the right, upstairs. In the passage a hat-stand is visible. When the curtain rises Mrs. Slater is seen laying the table. She is a vigorous, plump, red-faced vulgar woman, prepared to do any amount of straight talking to get her own way. She is in black, but not in complete mourning. She listens a moment and then goes to the window, opens it and calls into the street. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Contemporary One-Act Plays: With Outline Study of the One-Act Play and Bibliographies This collection of one-act plays appears because of an in creasingly large demand for such a volume. The plays have been selected and the Introduction prepared to meet the need of the student or teacher who desires to acquaint himself with the one-act play as a specific dramatic form. The plays included have been selected with this need in mind. Accordingly, emphasis has been placed upon the wholesome and uplifting rather than upon the sordid and the ultra-realistic. The unduly sentimental, the strikingly melodramatic, and the play of questionable moral problems, has been consciously avoided. Comedies, tragedies, farces, and melodramas have been included; but the chief concern has been that each play should be good dramatic art. This book was released on 2015-07-06 with total page 126 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bits of Background, in One Act Plays The scene is the living room in the home of an actress, a famous one, so the room is well furnished with taste and charm. It is essentially a becoming background although just now, a rather sombre one. At least Will Annersley thinks so. He enters, pulls up the shades, letting in the sunshine; sits on the couch, disarranging the pillows; drags out the newspapers which were neatly piled on the table; in short upsets everything. He is probably privileged because he is delicate and the only son of a highly emotional, adoring mother. Suddenly Leontine, Mrs. Annersley's maid, comes bustling in. In the glare of the light she looks her fifty years, though her hair is still black, her eyes dark and snapping. At sight of the room she is much perturbed and therefore overbold. Leontine Ah, Monsieur, it is too bad! This room - the look of it! About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Harvard Plays: A Collection of One Act Plays All the plays in this volume were originally produced by The 47 Workshop, - not The 47 Workshops as one or two newspapers, appar ently recalling Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves, have called the organization. The somewhat homely title means just what it suggests. This is a Workshop, because anyone who believes he has ability in any of the arts connected with the theatre acting, scene or costume designing, lighting, directing, or playwriting - may here prove his quality. It is The 47 Workshop because it grew from a course in playwriting, English 47, for many years offered by the Depart ment of English of Harvard University. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Representative One-Act Plays by Continental Authors: Selected, With Biographical Notes The Editor has tried to avoid duplication of material in other anthologies so far published, and he believes that, ex cept in a few instances, he has succeeded in using dramas that, though not entirely new, are novel and now brought together for the first time from unusual sources. They are all, so he believes, definitely representative of the best that has been written in the European one-act province, and in their variety illustrate the theater tendencies out of which they were given birth.
