Book excerpt: Excerpt from On the Application of a New Analytic Method to the Theory of Curves and Curved Surfaces I fear that brevity and compression have been but too much studied in the following essay, but the necessity of comprising the whole matter in a small compass, and the pressure of other avocations, will plead, I hope, a sufficient apology. From the same cause I have been obliged to omit altogether subjects which might have been with propriety introduced, for example, the general theory of shadows and have only touched upon others which would require perhaps further development. Among other applications of the method, I trust that to the theory of reciprocal polars will be found simple and satisfactory. Download or read book Maximal Cohen Macaulay Modules Over Non Isolated Surface Singularities and Matrix Problems written by Igor Burban and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2017-07-13 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this article the authors develop a new method to deal with maximal Cohen–Macaulay modules over non–isolated surface singularities. In particular, they give a negative answer on an old question of Schreyer about surface singularities with only countably many indecomposable maximal Cohen–Macaulay modules. Next, the authors prove that the degenerate cusp singularities have tame Cohen–Macaulay representation type. The authors' approach is illustrated on the case of k as well as several other rings. This study of maximal Cohen–Macaulay modules over non–isolated singularities leads to a new class of problems of linear algebra, which the authors call representations of decorated bunches of chains. They prove that these matrix problems have tame representation type and describe the underlying canonical forms.

Book excerpt: The aim of these notes is to develop the theory of algebraic curves from the viewpoint of modern algebraic geometry, but without excessive prerequisites. We have assumed that the reader is familiar with some basic properties of rings, ideals and polynomials, such as is often covered in a one-semester course in modern algebra; additional commutative algebra is developed in later sections.

Download or read book Featured Reviews in Mathematical Reviews 1997 1999 written by Donald G. Babbitt and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2000-05-05 with total page 762 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This second volume of Featured Reviews makes available special detailed reviews of some of the most important mathematical articles and books published from 1997 through 1999. Also included are excellent reviews of several classic books and articles published prior to 1970. Among those reviews, for example, are the following: Homological Algebra by Henri Cartan and Samuel Eilenberg, reviewed by G. Hochschild; Faisceaux algebriques coherents by Jean-Pierre Serre, reviewed by C. Chevalley; and On the Theory of General Partial Differential Operators by Lars Hormander, reviewed by J. L. Lions. In particular, those seeking information on current developments outside their own area of expertise will find the volume very useful. By identifying some of the best publications, papers, and books that have had or are expected to have a significant impact in applied and pure mathematics, this volume will serve as a comprehensive guide to important new research across all fields covered by MR.
Download or read book Stochastic Models Information Theory and Lie Groups Volume 2 written by Gregory S. Chirikjian and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-11-15 with total page 460 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This unique two-volume set presents the subjects of stochastic processes, information theory, and Lie groups in a unified setting, thereby building bridges between fields that are rarely studied by the same people. Unlike the many excellent formal treatments available for each of these subjects individually, the emphasis in both of these volumes is on the use of stochastic, geometric, and group-theoretic concepts in the modeling of physical phenomena. Stochastic Models, Information Theory, and Lie Groups will be of interest to advanced undergraduate and graduate students, researchers, and practitioners working in applied mathematics, the physical sciences, and engineering. Extensive exercises, motivating examples, and real-world applications make the work suitable as a textbook for use in courses that emphasize applied stochastic processes or differential geometry.

Download or read book A Course in Complex Analysis and Riemann Surfaces written by Wilhelm Schlag and published by American Mathematical Society. This book was released on 2014-08-06 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Complex analysis is a cornerstone of mathematics, making it an essential element of any area of study in graduate mathematics. Schlag's treatment of the subject emphasizes the intuitive geometric underpinnings of elementary complex analysis that naturally lead to the theory of Riemann surfaces. The book begins with an exposition of the basic theory of holomorphic functions of one complex variable. The first two chapters constitute a fairly rapid, but comprehensive course in complex analysis. The third chapter is devoted to the study of harmonic functions on the disk and the half-plane, with an emphasis on the Dirichlet problem. Starting with the fourth chapter, the theory of Riemann surfaces is developed in some detail and with complete rigor. From the beginning, the geometric aspects are emphasized and classical topics such as elliptic functions and elliptic integrals are presented as illustrations of the abstract theory. The special role of compact Riemann surfaces is explained, and their connection with algebraic equations is established. The book concludes with three chapters devoted to three major results: the Hodge decomposition theorem, the Riemann-Roch theorem, and the uniformization theorem. These chapters present the core technical apparatus of Riemann surface theory at this level. This text is intended as a detailed, yet fast-paced intermediate introduction to those parts of the theory of one complex variable that seem most useful in other areas of mathematics, including geometric group theory, dynamics, algebraic geometry, number theory, and functional analysis. More than seventy figures serve to illustrate concepts and ideas, and the many problems at the end of each chapter give the reader ample opportunity for practice and independent study.
Download or read book Plane Algebraic Curves written by Gerd Fischer and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2001 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is an excellent introduction to algebraic geometry, which assumes only standard undergraduate mathematical topics: complex analysis, rings and fields, and topology. Reading this book will help establish the geometric intuition that lies behind the more advanced ideas and techniques used in the study of higher-dimensional varieties.
