Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Old Virginia Before introducing to the reader, to the English reader at any rate, so many old friends and well remembered scenes from Virginian life, it seems to me that it would be not wholly amiss to give some slight historical account of the Old Dominion itself. I am perfectly aware of a certain incongruity in prefacing sketches of so light a character with anything in the shape of a historical essay. An author, however, may be allowed perhaps some license in this particular so long as he distinctly labels such a chapter with an unmistakable title. For no reader of a light work, I take it, considers himself bound to read the intro duction. And that there is perhaps even less occa sion than usual in this case, so far as the continuity of this little book is concerned, I will frankly admit. Having thus, I trust, made my peace with those who have no curiosity whatever regarding the past history of Virginia, I will remind those who have that this. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Estelle: An Idyl of Old Virginia Ome years since, when the author was Professor Of Ancient Languages in the Male High School, he urged upon the young men of his classes, as an excellent exercise in the acquisition of facility in English expression, a carefully written as well as a painstaking and exact oral translation Of the thoughts of the great authors they were reading. He had followed such a course himself at school and at the University Of Virginia, and to prove to his pupils that even one without natural gifts might, by such a practice, make some headway in expression, he sat down one Saturday morning, and before the day was over he had finished the most of Estelle. It embodies, it is true, in the main, experiences had by the author amid the uplands Of the Rappahannock, close under the Blue Ridge, in Old Virginia, where at his cousin's home, Estelle, now the author's wife, was teaching. In some points, however, the story is purely imaginative. It is hardly necessary to tell any one who knows the author that the author is no artist. Book Housekeeping in Old Virginia

Download or read book Housekeeping in Old Virginia written by Marion Cabell Tyree and published by . This book was released on 1879 with total page 544 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Virginia, or the Old Dominion, as her children delight to call her, has always been famed for the style of her living ... Tearing the glittering arms of King George from their sideboards, and casting them, with their costly plate and jewels, as offerings into the lap of the Continental Congress, they introduced in their homes that new style of living in which, discarding all the showy extravagance of the old, and retaining only its inexpensive graces, they succeeded in perfecting that system which, surviving to this day, has ever been noted for its beautiful and elegant simplicity. This system, which combines the thrifty frugality of New England with the less rigid style of Carolina, has been justly pronounced, by the throngs of admirers who have gathered from all quarters of the Union around the generous boards of her illustrious sons, as the very perfection of domestic art." -- Preface.

Book Historic Virginia Homes and Churches Classic Reprint

Download or read book Historic Virginia Homes and Churches Classic Reprint written by Robert Alexander Lancaster and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-04 with total page 552 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Historic Virginia Homes and Churches This work includes practically all of the principal Colonial homes of historic interest in the State of Virginia now standing and many which have been destroyed, together with the churches most likely to engage attention. In 1888 the writer began to gather photographs of historic buildings in Virginia for his private collection, and later, upon the request of friends, decided to publish them. The making of the collection as complete as possible and the gathering of the historical data have involved years of labor and much travelling in conveyances of many sorts and by foot. It may be said that the work was done at the psychological time, for much information gathered in past years would now be impossible to secure and much of that recently added will soon be as inaccessible. The information has been made as full as the great number of houses treated would allow. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Historic Gardens of Virginia But the book makes no claim for literary merit. With the ex ception of the introduction, it is altogether the work of amateurs. Nor does it profess to tell all about Virginia's old gardens. It does not undertake to tabulate all their beauties and recite everything for which they are famed. It tells but little of the celebrated men and women who have trod their paths, for throughout the aim has been for historic accuracy rather than romantic interest or literary value. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Life in Old Virginia, Vol. 1 When I am old and feeble, And cannot work any more, Then carry me back to Old Virginia, To Old Virginia's shore. This sentiment doubtless was most forcibly expressed in the year 1907, during which there was witnessed an international celebration of the first permanent settlement of the English speaking people upon the American continent. In aid of this event the Congress of the United States passed an Act approved March d, 1905, entitled "An Act to provide for celebrating the birth of the American Nation, the first permanent settlement of English speaking people on the Western hemisphere, by the holding of an international naval, marine and military celebration in the vicinity of Jamestown in the waters of Hampton Roads, in the State of Virginia, to provide for the suitable and permanent Commemoration of said event and to authorize an appropriation in aid thereof and for other purposes." The Act authorized the President of the United States to make public proclamation of this celebration, "inviting foreign nations to participate by the sending of their naval and such representatives of their military organizations as may be proper." The proclamation fixed the time of the beginning of the celebration on May 13, and ending not later than November 1, 1907.
