Book excerpt: Through the years, Dovers landscape has been greatly shaped by the contributions of its many influential residents. Upon his arrival, Richard Sackett, the first English settler in eastern Dutchess County, gazed at the soaring hillsides and gave the town its current name. Dovers most important and pivotal event occurred in 1731, when it hosted representatives at an interstate boundary conference. That indenture signing set the judicial line between the colony of Connecticut and the province of New York. After 1845, the railroad exported iron and brought artists like Asher Durand, whose painting of Dovers plains hangs today in the Smithsonian American Art Museum. With the train came tourists and painters, who were drawn to the sites they saw in Durands works. In the 20th century, the area changed again as old farms disappeared and new industry moved into town. While the community sent men to war and compassionately housed the mentally ill, the Dover Drag Strip made history as one of the first big drag racing tracks.

Book The Documentary History of the Supreme Court of the United States 1789 1800 The justices on circuit 1790 1794

Download or read book The Documentary History of the Supreme Court of the United States 1789 1800 The justices on circuit 1790 1794 written by Maeva Marcus and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 1985 with total page 652 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Volume 2 details the workings of the Court's experimental practice of sending Justices around the country to serve as judges at sessions of the various federal circuit courts. The documents in this volume reveal that the justices quickly voiced bitter complaints about the demands of their circuit duties. They also questioned the propriety--and perhaps constitutionality--of assigning the same individuals to act as superior and inferior court judges. The documents in this volume also touch upon topics that figured prominently in the law and politics of the era: neutrality, the boundary between state and federal crimes, the constitutional prohibition against impairing the obligations of contracts, and the relationship between law and morality.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many new states entered the United States around 200 years ago, but only Missouri almost killed the nation it was trying to join. When the House of Representatives passed the Tallmadge Amendment banning slavery from the prospective new state in February 1819, it set off a two-year political crisis in which growing northern antislavery sentiment confronted the southern whites’ aggressive calls for slavery’s westward expansion. The Missouri Crisis divided the U.S. into slave and free states for the first time and crystallized many of the arguments and conflicts that would later be settled violently during the Civil War. The episode was, as Thomas Jefferson put it, “a fire bell in the night” that terrified him as the possible “knell of the Union.” Drawing on the participants in two landmark conferences held at the University of Missouri and the City University of New York, this first of two volumes finds myriad new perspectives on the Missouri Crisis. Celebrating Missouri’s bicentennial the scholarly way, with fresh research and unsparing analysis, this eloquent collection of essays from distinguished historians gives the epochal struggle over Missouri statehood its due as a major turning point in American history. Contributors include the editors, Christa Dierksheide, David N. Gellman, Sarah L. H. Gronningsater, Robert Lee, Donald Ratcliffe, Andrew Shankman, Anne Twitty, John R. Van Atta, and David Waldstreicher.

Book The Money Game in Old New York

Download or read book The Money Game in Old New York written by Clifford Browder and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 2014-07-15 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "I got to be a millionaire afore I know'd it hardly," remarked the Wall Street financier Daniel Drew (1797-1879). An uneducated farm boy from Putnam County, New York, he became in turn a successful cattle drover, a circus clown, tavern keeper, a shrewd Hudson River steamboat operator, and an unscrupulous speculator. As the colorful "Uncle Daniel" of Wall Street-his whiskered face seamed with wrinkles and twinkling with steel-gray eyes—time and again he disrupted the financial markets with manipulations whereby he either won or lost millions of dollars. Having "got religion" upon hearing a scary hell-fire sermon at the age of fourteen, Drew was also a fervent Methodist. Rumors of his financial operations—epic struggles that pitted him against Cornelius Vanderbilt, Jay Gould, and Jim Fisk, and that subjected him to threats of arrest and even kidnapping, and on one occasion to a most undignified flight from the state-baffled and disturbed the Methodists, who admittedly had little grasp of Wall Street but knew firsthand Brother Drew's tearful repentance at prayer meetings and his generosity in founding churches and seminaries. With its dual commitment to religion and rascality, Drew's career is a rich study in contradictions, an exciting chronicle of high drama and low comedy capped by bankruptcy. To understand Drew in his complexity, the author argues, is to get a grip on the heady and exploitative age that produced him—the yesterday of "smartness" and "go ahead" that helped engender the America of today. Based on primary sources, this is the first full-fledged biography of Drew, who hitherto has been known chiefly through a fictionalized and fraudulent account of 1910.
