Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Old Gospel in the New Century In the years of childhood we accept with unquestioning faith the instructions of our parents and teachers; but as the years pass and the faculties of the mind expand, as the reason grows stronger and we begin to broaden the foundations of our faith, we come to a point where we begin to ask questions about our environment and want to be able to give an intelligent reason for our faith. We come at length to a place where we awake to the fact that we are in a world that is several thousand years older than we are, that we are living in the midst of laws and institutions that have come down from hoary antiquity, and we very naturally want to know the meaning of these facts and institutions. We find among these institutions the Church with its system of doctrine and its forms of worship, and we begin to ask ourselves, What is the Church? What is its mission to our age and what its relation to our life problems? Our fathers believed that it was a divine institution founded by Christ for the purpose of saving men and women from sin and at length establishing the reign of righteousness in the earth. There are those in our day who tell us that the church is merely a human institution like the lodge, the school or the lyceum; that people of like tastes and aims have banded themselves together for mutual improvement and have called the society thus formed a church. Book Jesus and the Jewish Roots of the Eucharist

Download or read book Jesus and the Jewish Roots of the Eucharist written by Brant Pitre and published by Image. This book was released on 2011-02-15 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A revelatory exploration of the Jewish roots of the Last Supper that seeks to understand exactly what happened at Jesus’ final Passover. “Clear, profound and practical—you do not want to miss this book.”—Dr. Scott Hahn, author of The Lamb’s Supper and The Fourth Cup Jesus and the Jewish Roots of the Eucharist shines fresh light on the Last Supper by looking at it through Jewish eyes. Using his in-depth knowledge of the Bible and ancient Judaism, Dr. Brant Pitre answers questions such as: What was the Passover like at the time of Jesus? What were the Jewish hopes for the Messiah? What was Jesus’ purpose in instituting the Eucharist during the feast of Passover? And, most important of all, what did Jesus mean when he said, “This is my body… This is my blood”? To answer these questions, Pitre explores ancient Jewish beliefs about the Passover of the Messiah, the miraculous Manna from heaven, and the mysterious Bread of the Presence. As he shows, these three keys—the Passover, the Manna, and the Bread of the Presence—have the power to unlock the original meaning of the Eucharistic words of Jesus. Along the way, Pitre also explains how Jesus united the Last Supper to his death on Good Friday and his Resurrection on Easter Sunday. Inspiring and informative, Jesus and the Jewish Roots of the Eucharist is a groundbreaking work that is sure to illuminate one of the greatest mysteries of the Christian faith: the mystery of Jesus’ presence in “the breaking of the bread.”

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Fourfold Gospel, most often associated with Albert B. Simpson, founder of The Christian and Missionary Alliance, which focuses on the doctrines of Christ as Savior, Sanctifier, Healer, and Coming King, has been identified as a key contributing factor to the birth and development of the modern Pentecostal movement. Through a close observation of the doctrinal themes of select and renowned Evangelical leaders in America (A. J. Gordon of Boston, D. L. Moody of Chicago, A. T. Pierson of Philadelphia/Detroit, and A. B. Simpson of New York), this work shows that the Fourfold Gospel and, therefore, the theological source for modern Pentecostalism, rather than being a marginal movement within late nineteenth-century Evangelicalism was, instead, its very heart.

Download or read book New Century Trinity written by David T Williams and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2001-12-07 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What has the ancient doctrine of the Trinity to do with the twentyfirst century? Is it just a fossil from the past, fit only for a museum? Does it have anything to say to modern concerns? There is currently a revival of interest in the doctrine, but few seek to put it firmly into the modern world. Without this, it will soon be neglected again. Far from irrelevance, the doctrine of the Trinity has an impact on the relationship of science to Christian belief, to the drive towards sexual equality, to the impersonality of modern life, and other issues. The book attempts a new presentation of the Trinity that is consistent with the Bible and ancient formulations, but is consistent with the modern world. Provocative? intentionally so, but with the hope that the doctrine will once again find its place in the centre of Christian belief and practice.
