Book Oil and Geopolitics in the Caspian Sea Region

Download or read book Oil and Geopolitics in the Caspian Sea Region written by Bülent Aras and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 1999-12-30 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The opening of the Caspian Sea basin to Western investment following the breakup of the Soviet Union produced a major contest for access to the region's vast energy reserves on the part of powers as close as Russia, Turkey, and Iran, and as far away as Japan and the United States. Indeed, the struggle to exploit Caspian oil has been one of the most monumental geopolitical developments of the post-Cold War era as external powers vie for political, economic, and military influence in a region brimming not only with oil, but also with ethnic conflicts and historical animosities. The coming decade of rapidly increasing demand for energy will ensure the continued interest and engagement of external powers with often competing geopolitical agendas. Thus the geopolitical developments spawned by the opening of the Caspian Sea are likely to continue to far outweigh the actual impact of Caspian oil on world energy markets. This collection of essays by prominent scholars and international experts offers several important and often conflicting interpretations of the events unfolding along the shores of the world's oldest oil-producing region.

Book The oil and gas resources of Azerbaijan

Download or read book The oil and gas resources of Azerbaijan written by Fazil Zeynalov and published by Editions Publibook. This book was released on 2016-05-20 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since its independence, thanks to the rational and controlled use of its natural resources and the diversification of its oil and gas pipelines, Azerbaijan has become a major regional energy hub, an essential contributor to most of the large-scale projects in the region, and a new commercial and security partner for Europe. It is committed to an ambitious strategy of diversified economic development. Azerbaijan, which has the world's most ancient oil industry, has left behind its relative anonymity of the Soviet era and become an independent player on the stage of Eurasian energy. As a researcher at the Baku State University, the author, Fazil Zeynalov, provides a particularly pertinent geostrategic study of Azerbaijan and its energy policies. He explains the changing history of Azerbaijan's energy reserves since the Middle Ages and presents the importance and geopolitical prospects of the Caspian Sea. This detailed and informative publication is recommended reading for teachers, researchers and students, as well as members of the wider public wishing to understand the international issues associated with the Caspian, and more broadly with the region that links Asia and Europe.

Book Caspian Energy Resources

Download or read book Caspian Energy Resources written by and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This volume is a collection of papers presented at a conference sponsored by the Emirates Center for Strategic Studies and Research (ECSSR) entitled 'Caspian Energy Resources: Implications for the Arab Gulf', held in Abu Dhabi, October 25-26, 1998. The Arab Gulf is currently the predominant oil exporting region in the world. How far does the energy resource potential of the Caspian basin represent a major challenge to the supremacy of the Arab Gulf? In the course of this volume, the authors explore the various dimensions of Caspian energy, ranging from contentious pipeline issues to the impact of Caspian oil on Gulf producers, OPEC member states and global markets. A discourse on the attraction of Caspian oil reserves underlines the rationale for massive foreign investment flooding the region. The aforementioned issues are studied from the perspectives of the major players and in the context of regional politics and the complex legal environment. Although the future impact of Caspian energy is yet to be determined, this volume offers valuable insight and comprehensive analysis on the major determinants affecting this strategically significant oil-rich region."--

Book Constructive Competition in the Caspian Sea Region

Download or read book Constructive Competition in the Caspian Sea Region written by Agha Bayramov and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2022-05-19 with total page 167 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Caspian Sea region has hitherto largely been investigated from a `New Great Game’ perspective that depicts the region as a geopolitical battleground between regional and external great powers, where tensions have been exacerbated by the sea’s rich natural resources, strategic location, and legal disagreements over its status. This book, by contrast, portrays a new image of the region, which still acknowledges the difficulties and problematic starting situation of power politics there. It, however, seeks to show that there are ways forward by identifying mechanisms and means to transform the `New Great Game’ into processes of functional co-operation. Drawing on theoretical insights from a functionalist framework, this book examines three intertwined case studies, namely the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan pipeline (BTC), the Southern Gas Corridor (SGC), and the Caspian Environmental Program (CEP). It shows that lessons learned from environmental co-operation have influenced the discussion over the uncertain legal status of the sea, which culminated in the signing in 2018 of the Convention on the legal status of the Caspian Sea. This book analyzes the three phases of the BTC and the SGC projects: the planning of the pipeline, its construction, and its use, none of which have been adequately addressed yet. This book illustrates the increasing role of actors beyond and besides the states in the Caspian Sea region, such as transnational corporations, non-governmental organizations, and intergovernment organizations.
