Book excerpt: This dissertation describes research designed to investigate the influence of select teacher and school characteristics on the perceived professional development needs of in-service physical educators in the state of Ohio. Data were collected using a self-report survey instrument comprised of the Professional Development Needs Questionnaire-Physical Education (Conkle, 1994), and the Teacher Concerns Questionnaire-Physical Education (McBride, 1993). Additional demographic data were collected and categorized according to grade level taught (elementary, middle school, high school, or some combination), and school setting/location (urban/inner city, suburban/small city, and rural). Descriptive statistics and Pearson correlation coefficients were analyzed to determine the strength of the relationship between the independent and dependent variables. Multiple regression using stepwise method was further conducted to determine the degree to which a teacher's stage of concern, grade level taught and school setting influenced the perceived professional development needs. Results indicated that participants' perceived professional development needs were driven primarily by issues of concern rather than teaching situation (e.g., grade level taught; school setting/location).

Book excerpt: A recent influx of Federal, State and Local agencies have developed agendas which focus on improving the status of teaching in America's schools. Much of the thrust of the agendas has focused on developing professional development programs for educators. Teachers' stages of development literature indicate that individual's professional development needs change over time and across contexts. In this light, one model of professional development will not meet the needs of all educators. Therefore, the primary purpose of this study was to describe the professional development opportunities of four experienced elementary physical educators and the extent to which these experiences informed the teaching-learning process. The secondary purpose of the study was to attain the experienced teachers' perspectives on the impact of individual professional development on student learning and thirdly to identify the constraints and supports for professional development opportunities. The qualitative data collection methods included: teacher interviews, observation of teaching, collected documents, and e-mail communication with the four participants. The quantitative data included participants' responses on the Teachers' Concerns Questionnaire-Physical Education (McBride, 1993) and on the Perceived Needs Questionnaire-Physical Education (Conkle, 1995). Data analysis procedures included questionnaire mean scores, constant comparative methods, and document analysis. Findings indicated that individual experiences and life cycles may have an effect on the concerns of teachers as well as the types of professional development pursue. Further, the school context and district support impacts the types of opportunities teachers explore. Specifically there is a lack of alignment between state and local professional development policies and the professional development needs of elementary physical educators. Many of the professional development "best practices" such as accommodating for individual differences, conducting development over a sustained period of time, and implementation of follow-up activities were not implemented in practice. Further, the topics of school building level professional development sessions were not relevant for the participants. Thus, mandated attendance at opportunities provided within the district did not meet the professional development needs of the participants. Few instances were found in which knowledge gained through professional development informed teaching practice. The participants described the development of a network of physical education peers who assisted with providing support and decreasing isolation.

Book excerpt: Students with disabilities should receive adapted physical education (APE) services from a qualified APE and! or a general physical education (GPE) teacher. Current research, however, has shown that many teachers of students with disabilities feel unprepared and lack the confidence to teach these students. To ensme that students with disabilities receive appropriate and quality physical education, APE and GPE teachers should receive relevant professional development. The pmpose of this study was to determine the perceived professional development needs of APE and GPE teachers regarding working with students who have disabilities. A total of 13 8 teachers (APE = 42, GPE = 45, and dual roles in APE/GPE =51) completed an online survey to rank and rate 12 professional development content areas. Results indicated that all of the teachers combined felt they need professional development most in the areas of knowledge of disabilities and teaching and instructional strategies. APE teachers felt that behavior management and teaching and instructional strategies were the most important professional development content areas, while GPE teachers felt that knowledge of disabilities, inclusion techniques, and teaching and instructional strategies were the most important professional development content areas.

Book excerpt: It is little wonder that there is national consensus on the necessity for school physical education to facilitate holistic development of all learners. Moreover, given the increased mental health issues that K-12 students are facing, it is important to consider a strengths-based approach to physical education that focuses on the holistic development. Positive youth development (PYD) is such a strengths-based approach but there is limited evidence of its utility in K-12 physical education. PYD aligns with the adventure-based learning (ABL) pedagogical model in physical education, which focuses on developing the personal and social skills of students. Thus, the purpose of this qualitative study was to explore the use of a virtual professional development workshop on teachers’ knowledge and understanding of ABL and PYD and their perception of using ABL to foster PYD. A qualitative case study design was adopted as a methodological approach. Five in-service physical education teachers were selected as key informants. Data were gathered through individual interviews, focus group interview, videotaping and field notes, researcher’s memos, and participants’ written journals. Data were analyzed using inductive analysis. The findings of this study indicated that the virtual professional development workshop was helpful in supporting teachers’ learning and understanding of ABL and PYD, and their perception of using ABL to foster PYD. Specifically, the teachers understood ABL as a useful strategy, particularly as a good starter of a new academic year. They also perceived that, using the ABL model, it was feasible to foster PYD within physical education settings. Given the teachers’ learning about ABL and PYD, it was determined that the content of the virtual professional development workshop was effectively delivered to the teachers. Four specific factors were highlighted as important for the effectiveness of the workshop: (a) uniqueness of the professional development activities, (b) providing useful resources ahead of time, (c) hands-on experience, and (d) alignment with teachers’ philosophy of teaching. Based on their learning in the virtual professional development workshop, the participants perceived that teaching ABL to foster PYD in their physical education program was possible. At the same time, they felt that they needed to modify the ABL lessons to their specific teaching context. The participants also perceived that the ABL activities would be beneficial to their students' social and emotional competencies, interpersonal development, and sense of enjoyment of physical education. Based on the findings, I provided implications for in-service teacher professional development, K-12 physical education, and physical education teacher education programs. Then, recommendations for future research were given along with the limitations of the current study.
