Book excerpt: Add value to the student experience with purposeful residential programs Grounded in current research and practical experience, Student Learning in College Residence Halls: What Works, What Doesn't, and Why shows how to structure the peer environment in residence halls to advance student learning. Focusing on the application of student learning principles, the book examines how neurobiological and psychosocial development influences how students learn in residence halls. The book is filled with examples, useful strategies, practical advice, and best practices for building community and shaping residential environments that produce measureable learning outcomes. Readers will find models for a curriculum-based approach to programming and for developing student staff competencies, as well as an analysis of what types of residential experiences influence student learning. An examination of how to assess student learning in residence halls and of the challenges residence halls face provide readers with insight into how to strategically plan for the future of residence halls as learning centers. This book addresses these developments, reviews contemporary research, and provides up-to-date advice for creating residence hall environments that achieve educationally purposeful outcomes. Discover which educational benefits are associated with living in residence halls Learn how residential environments influence student behavior Create residence hall environments that produce measureable learning outcomes Monitor effectiveness with a process of systematic assessment Residence halls are an integral part of the college experience; with the right programs in place they can become dynamic centers of student learning. Student Learning in College Residence Halls is a comprehensive resource for residence hall professionals and others interested in improving students' learning experience.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The story of the College of Santa Fe is a BIG story. Its ancestry traces to 17th-century France, and its history is totally intertwined with the history of the state of New Mexico. Its original founders arrived in 1859, after months of traveling the Atlantic Ocean in wooden ships, then the young land of America by railroad, ox cart, horseback, and on foot. In 1874 it became the first institution of higher learning chartered by the New Mexico Territorial Legislature, and when New Mexico became the 47th of the United States in 1912, more than one-fifth of the drafters of the state's first constitution were among its graduates. As a full four-year post-secondary college, it opened its doors in 1947, on the site of a former U.S. Army hospital abandoned at the end of World War II. All the structures it occupied were "temporary" military buildings, and the first new hall erected there did not come until 1961. All through its existence it struggled financially, but year after year it held on, bringing college degrees to thousands of students, many of whom had not dreamed that such success was in their reach. The college had a life-and then it had a death. It did not attain old age, succumbing after 62 years, due to unrelenting economic pressures. But before it died it achieved academic distinction, as one of the best liberal-arts schools in the West. It also gained professional acclaim, with its graduates triumphing as performers, as artists, as achievers at the highest levels in their several fields. Now the story of its entire existence is told in this book.

Download or read book Haunted Halls written by Elizabeth Tucker and published by Univ. Press of Mississippi. This book was released on 2009-10-20 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why do so many American college students tell stories about encounters with ghosts? In Haunted Halls, the first book-length interpretive study of college ghostlore, Elizabeth Tucker takes the reader back to school to get acquainted with a wide range of college spirits. Some of the best-known ghosts that she discusses are Emory University's Dooley, who can disband classes by shooting professors with his water pistol; Mansfield University's Sara, who threw herself down a flight of stairs after being rejected by her boyfriend; and Huntingdon College's Red Lady, who slit her wrists while dressed in a red robe. Gettysburg College students have collided with ghosts of soldiers, while students at St. Mary-of-the-Woods College have reported frightening glimpses of the Faceless Nun. Tucker presents campus ghostlore from the mid-1960s to 2006, with special attention to stories told by twenty-first-century students through e-mail and instant messages. Her approach combines social, psychological, and cultural analysis, with close attention to students' own explanations of the significance of spectral phenomena. As metaphors of disorder, insanity, and school spirit, college ghosts convey multiple meanings. Their colorful stories warn students about the dangers of overindulgence, as well as the pitfalls of potentially horrifying relationships. Besides offering insight into students' initiation into campus life, college ghost stories make important statements about injustices suffered by Native Americans, African Americans, and others.
